Chef Shuai Wang was the runner-up on the 22nd season of Bravo’s Top Chef and is the force behind two standout restaurants in Charleston, South Carolina—Jackrabbit Filly and King BBQ—where he brings together the flavors of his childhood in Beijing and the spirit of the South in some pretty unforgettable ways. He grew up just a short walk from Tiananmen Square, in a tiny home with no electricity or running water, where his grandmother often cooked over charcoal. Later, in Queens, New York, his mom taught herself to cook—her first dishes were a little salty, but they were always made with love. And somewhere along the way, Shuai learned that cooking wasn’t just about food—it was about taking care of people. After years working in New York kitchens, he made his way to Charleston and started building something that feels entirely his own. Today, we’re talking about how all those experiences come together on the plate, the family stories behind his cooking, and what it’s been like to share that journey on national TV. When you hear the word “anatomy,” what feelings come up? Enter Dr. Andrew McGonigle, a yoga teacher with over 20 years of experience in anatomy, in part because he originally thought and trained to be a physician. After having an epiphany that led him to change paths, he found that helping yoga teachers understand anatomy was both his passion and his zone of genius. When you listen to this episode, you’ll see how easy Andrew makes it to understand anatomy and we also take time to share what’s possible for you when you truly understand it. There’s no denying that yoga is both a physical and mental practice. When people practice yoga, they can experience all sorts of emotions and that may come out in various ways. In this episode, Dr. Lauren Tober and I discuss various scenarios that may come up in your classes and look at them through the lens of mental health, sharing emotions and human behavior. These topics are not often discussed but they can provide an important foundation for yoga teachers when teaching classes. In this episode, Dr. Tober breaks down the components of mental health into 6 pillars, which are further explored in her book ( link below ). Highlights include the ethics of being a yoga teacher and what’s within our professional scope of practice as well as how yoga can be helpful from a therapeutic perspective. We discuss what it means to create a “safe space” for our students, how to teach a class when a student is doing their own practice ( outside of what you’re teaching ) and other scenarios that may arise. More about Dr. Lauren Tober: Dr Lauren Tober is a Clinical Psychologist, Senior Yoga Teacher and Author based in Mullumbimby, Australia. With a deep curiosity in health, healing, happiness and awakening, Lauren integrates the best of western psychology with ancient yogic wisdom, both on and off the mat. Lauren is the founder of the Yoga Psychology Institute and Mental Health Aware Yoga , the author of Mental Health Aware Yoga Yoga: A Guide for Yoga Teachers , host of the A Grateful Life Podcast and loves teaching yoga teachers about mental health, and health professionals about yoga. Her work is soulful without being new-agey. It’s evidence-based, without being clinical. It’s authentic, heartfelt and life-changing. I'll attach a couple of photos you're welcome to use to promote the episode, as well as a copy of my new book - Mental Health Aware Yoga Yoga: A Guide for Yoga Teachers . People can also download the first chapter of my book for free at www.mentalhealthawareyoga.com/book . In my years of working with hundreds of yoga teachers inside my program, I’ve discovered there are several different teacher types. Each has their own unique set of problems but many times, they don’t see it as a problem because there’s a strong belief causing them to keep doing what they’re doing…. even when it feels hard, pressure-filled and blocks them from feeling confident. In this episode, you’ll hear about a few of these teacher types, the characteristics of each and a starter solution so the you can start to fix the problem. Don’t be surprised if this conversation triggers you a bit; sometimes, when our beliefs get challenged, we get defensive. If you are open minded, curious and looking to find your confidence as a teacher, this episode is for you. In the show, I talk about The Yoga Anatomy Accelerator Program. Have you ever had a physical reaction to an emotion you feel? What about as a yoga teacher.. have you ever asked your students to “notice how you feel?” Noticing how we feel and managing our emotions and the reactions to them in our physical body is part of the study of somatics. This is part of what you’ll learn about when you listen to my conversation with coach, author and podcast host, Laurie James. Laurie shares her story as well as the work she does with clients, helping them to find more freedom, peace and joy in their lives. We take time to relate the topic to teaching yoga too so if you’re a teacher, you’ll find quite a bit in this episode for you. Here is more about Laurie: Laurie James is a mother, divorcée, recovering caregiver turned author, somatic relationship coach, and podcaster. Laurie’s podcast, Confessions of a Freebird, was inspired by her youngest of four children leaving the nest and is the sequel to her book, Sandwiched: A Memoir of Holding On and Letting Go . Laurie’s book is about her journey from loneliness to finding belonging during a time when she was raising four teenage daughters, her mother had a heart attack and needed care, all while her marriage began to crumble. Now Laurie coaches’ women in midlife. Through blending her somatic training into her coaching she helps women divorce, heal, and date differently so they can find the inner freedom to experience more happiness and joy and create the life they desire. She primarily works with women who are going through a divorce and supports them through dating and beyond. She blends her coaching and somatic training to help her clients develop a better relationship with their bodies and nervous system. And to work through their unresolved past so they can find more freedom and love in all their relationships. When she is not coaching clients or podcasting, she can be found nurturing her free spirit by walking her dog, skiing, sailing, hiking, spending time with close friends and partner or planning her next adventure. Laurie has a free download you can get right now that will help you learn more about somatic healing techniques: https://laurieejames.myflodesk.com/bgtsh One more thing: At the start of the episode, I shared a little bit with you about my new program, The Yoga Anatomy Accelerator.
