The magical start continues, San Diego! Padres started 7-0 for the first time in their 57-season history by beating the Cleveland Guardians 5-2 at Petco. The Padres’ 1-4 hitters- Fernando Tatis Jr, Luis Arraez, Manny Machado and brand-new hundred million dollar man Jackson Merrill- put on a show today, putting 4 runs on the board with 2 outs and nobody on in the 3rd inning. Jackson Merrill’s 2-run homer put an exclamation point on the aforementioned 4-run outburst, but it was only possible due to the baseball brilliance of Fernando Tatis Jr and Luis Arraez. Tatis scored the 1st run of the game on a beautifully executed double steal with Arraez to start the onslaught. Arraez took off for 2nd, drawing the throw from Cleveland catcher Bo Naylor. Arraez pulls and Daniel Schneeman throws it home, but way too late to get Tatis, who timed it perfectly. Arraez went to 3rd on Manny Machado’s infield single and then scored on 3rd baseman José Ramírez's throwing error. Merrill then homered in his 2nd straight game. He was an All-Star in 2024 and finished 2nd to Paul Skenes in NL Rookie of the Year balloting. The homer by Merrill came 2 days after his bobblehead night on Monday. He turns 22 on April 19. The young star is an already a huge fan favorite, and by the looks of things, his star will only keep rising. Arraez homered leading off the 7th, his 1st of the season. That’s all Dylan Cease needed in his 2nd start, as the power-pitching righty (1-0) held the Guardians to one run on 4 hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out 7 and walking only 1 hitter. Closet Robert Suarez worked a perfect 9th for his 3rd save, striking out 1 hitter. Tatis has 5 stolen bases in 7 games. The San Diego Padres are 6-0! Michael King struck out 11 in 5 innings and Jackson Merrill hit his 1st home run of the season for the Padres, who shut out the Cleveland Guardians 7-0 to improve to 6-0 for the first time in their 57-season history. King and 4 Padres’ relievers combined on a 2-hitter, striking out 16 in front of an electric crowd at Petco Park. The Padres have thrown shutouts in three of their last four games. Lefty Omar Cruz- making his major league debut- tossed a perfect 9th inning. San Diego’s bullpen extended its scoreless streak to 24 innings. King (1-0) was dominant from the start, allowing just a leadoff single in the 5th (before striking out the side) and a 2-out single in the 3rd. The right-hander walked just 1 and hit a batter. Merrill homered to right-center with 2 outs in the fourth to get the offense going. It was the first HR this season for Merrill, who had 24 last year, when he finished 2nd in the NL Rookie of the Year voting. He has at least 1 hit in all 6 games. The Padres scored 4 runs on 4 hits in 7 innings off Cleveland starter Logan Allen (0-1), drawing 5 walks and striking out just once. Pads’ Reliever Jason Adam- who has been absolutely great so far- relieved Yuki Matsui with 2 runners on and 2 outs in the 7th and San Diego leading 4-0. Adam loaded the bases with an HBP, then struck out Steven Kwan to end the inning. The 2025 San Diego Padres (5-0) set a new record for the best start in franchise history with their 7-2 smashing of the Cleveland Guardians at Petco Park. Kyle Hart earned his 1st big league win, Gavin Sheets ripped a pair of two-run doubles and the Padres beat the Cleveland Guardians 7-2 to start 5-0 for the first time in their 57-season history. The Padres' best start prior to this season was 4-0 in 1984, when they went to their first World Series against the Detroit Tigers. Hart (1-0) returned to the big leagues 5 years after his previous stint, when he made 4 appearances and 3 starts for the Red Sox during the 2020 season. (pandemic) The 32-year-old lefty allowed 2 runs on 5 hits in 5 innings, including solo HR’s by José Ramírez and Austin Hedges. Hart struck out four and walked one. The Padres beat up on Luis Ortiz (0-1) in his Cleveland debut, scoring 7 runs on 9 hits in his 4 2/3 innings of work. Sheets smashed a 2-run double off the right field wall in the Padres’ 4-run 2nd inning, then sliced another RBI double down the left field line in their 3-run 5th. Jason Hayward drove in a pair of runs with a sacrifice fly in the 2nd and a double in the 5th. Nick Pivetta threw 7 innings of brilliant one-hit ball in his dazzling San Diego debut, and the Padres bullpen slammed the door on the Atlanta Braves to finish off a 5-0 win for the Friars, who have started the season 4-0 for the 1st time since 1984. Fernando Tatis, Jr., reached base every time up for the Padres, scoring 2 runs and driving in 1 while stealing his 3rd base of the season. Tatis is hitting .467 to start the season. Manny Machado came back to the lineup a day after exiting in the 4th inning with a strained calf. Machado hit an RBI double to put the Padres on the board in the bottom of the 1st inning. Xander Bogaerts, Jackson Merrill and Brandon Lockridge also hit RBI doubles for the Padres, and Gavin Sheets went 2-4z The Braves have lost 6 straight games at Petco Park, including last season's 2-game sweep in the NL wild-card round. Pivetta (1-0) faced the minimum 21 batters. He allowed a a leadoff single in the 3rd inning. He struck out four and walked none. The Braves sent the minimum 27 batters to the plate. Machado left yesterday’s game in the 4th inning with a cramp in his right calf that flared up during an at-bat. Jake Cronenworth hit a go-ahead home run leading off the bottom of the 8th inning to break a 3-3 tie and push the San Diego Padres (2-0) past the Atlanta Braves (0-2) by the score of 4-3. Cronenworth drove the 2nd pitch from Dylan Lee (0-1) deep into the right field seats, a blast that had his teammates running up out of the dugout and sent the Petco Park fans into a frenzy. Fernando Tatis Jr homered to lead off the bottom of the 1st inning to get the Padres on the board 1st. Tatis, who has batted leadoff in the 1st two games, homered to left-center on Braves’ Starter Reynaldo López's first pitch. It was Tatis’ 12th career leadoff homer. Martin Maldonado’s RBI single in the 2nd inning gave the Padres a 2-0 lead, but Marcell Ozuna hit a 2-out, 2-run single in the 3rd to tie it for the Braves. San Diego’s Xander Bogaerts hit a 2-out RBI double in the 3rd, and Jarred Kelenic tied it at 3 apiece with his leadoff HR to right field. Jason Adam (1-0) struck out the side in the 8th inning to earn the win. Closer Robert Suarez pitched a perfect 9th for his 2nd save in as many days to start the season. Suarez was hit on the lower leg by Drake Baldwin’s liner leading off the inning but remained the game. Bummer then intentionally walked Xander Bogaerts, and Daysbel Hernández came in and allowed Gurriel's hit that scored Cronenworth. Cronenworth hit a go-ahead homer in Friday night's 4-3 win.
