What qualities do I see in trainees that go on to have long and successful careers as air traffic controllers?
That is a deep question.
I talk about how the main thing to do is to show up every day. That's number 1! Next, is to show up prepared every day. Be ready to train. Know more than what they expect you to know. you have to know more than they know.
The last thing I talk about is that you have to be responsible for your training. whether you succeed or not is not dependent on your trainer or your instructor. It depends on YOU! You have to care about your success because your trainers and instructors won't care about it as much as you do.

Talent wins games, but teamwork wins championships. Teamwork is not about you. Great teams create community. Adding value to others adds value to you. In this episode, I continue our journey through John Maxwell's book "Success is a Choice." This week the topics include: Cultivate Good Relationships Commit to Responsibility First I look at cultivating good relationships and how that is so important when you are at the Academy. I look at the impact that good relationships have as well as the impact that negative relationships can have. I then look at the 5 signs of a good relationship: Mutual enjoyment Respect Shared experiences Trust Reciprocity I then take a look at the need to commit to responsibility. In this episode, I answer the questions: What is non-radar and how can I identify traffic using the flight progress strips? Non-Radar is exactly that...you have to separate aircraft without using radar. There are rules you can use to make that happen. The non-radar section of the Academy is designed to take you from no knowledge to where you can work some fairly complex traffic. How do you use the strips to identify traffic? I talk about how you can use W-H-A-T to find the restrictions you need to get aircraft from where they are to where they want to be safely. I also talk about how you will want to write all of this on paper in case you get interrupted. Then, we talked about your pre-plan checklist and how important it is to your success in non-radar. In this episode, I discuss the next chapters from John Maxwell's Book "Success is a Choice". I talk about how we can learn and use these ideas in our journey as air traffic controllers. First, today, I talked about: EMBODY PERSEVERANCE I talked about the Principles of Perseverance- · Perseverance means succeeding because you are determined to, not destined to. · Perseverance recognizes life is not a long race but many short ones in succession. · Perseverance is needed to release MOST of life's rewards. · Perseverance draws sweetness out of adversity. · Perseverance has a compounding effect on life. · Perseverance means stopping not because you're tired but because the task is done. · Perseverance doesn't demand more than we have, but ALL THAT WE HAVE. I also talked about the enemies of perseverance- · A lifestyle of giving up. · A wrong belief that life should be easy. · A wrong belief that success is a destination. · A lack of resiliency. · A lack of vision. In this episode, I continue my talk about how we can take some great information from John Maxwell's book "Success is a Choice” and apply it to air traffic control. This time I go through the section on taking initiative, or in ATC terms, "Taking Control." I talk about: Taking control is the first step to anywhere you want to go. Taking control closes the door to fear. Taking control opens the door to opportunity. Taking control eases life's difficulties. Taking control is often the difference between success and failure. Then I looked at what happens when you don't take control: You fail to see the consequences of inaction You want someone else to motivate you. You look for the perfect time to act. You like tomorrow better than today. Finally, I talked about how you can develop taking control: Accept responsibility. Examine your reasons for not taking control. Focus on the benefits of completing a task. Share your goals with a friend who will help you. "One is too small a number to achieve greatness"!!!! Break large tasks into smaller ones. In this episode, I talk about how we can use Dr. John Maxwell's book "Success is a Choice" and apply it to air traffic control and the Academy. This is only the first of several episodes we will go through about this book and using it to become GREAT controllers. I talk about how you have to make choices that bring success. As part of that, we learn that talent by itself is never enough, and that our job is to do a great job with the talents that we have been given. Then, I talked about how you have to believe in yourself to be successful. You also have to believe in your potential( which very one of you has!). Then you have to believe in your QUEST! You have to believe that your quest is worth the pain you are going through. I ended with: you have to fire up your passion. Yes, you have to be passionate about Air Traffic Control! It is only with belief in yourself and passion for your quest that you will be able to survive the inevitable dejection that you are going to feel at some point at the Academy. In this episode, I talk about some of my initial thoughts on what happened on January 29 at Reagan National Airport. I give some of my observations from the initial news reports as well as some information from people I use to work with. I also talk about some of my own experiences with working jets and helicopters in the same vicinity. When an incident like this happens, it shines a bright light on just how much responsibility we have as controllers to ensure that everyone who flies through our airspace gets home safely. 99.5% of the time they do. That number truly is a miracle when you think of the sheer numbers of aircraft that are worked every day in the United States. In this episode, I talk about the question of AGE. The FAA has some strict guidelines for how old you have to be and how old you can be when you apply to become an air traffic controller. What do those guidelines mean when it comes to the Academy and to training at your first facility? Through my own experiences training at ZFW as a 34 year old and my experiences as an instructor at the Academy, I hope to help answer some questions about what it is like to train at different ages.
