D&D has a long and rich history of gaming tournaments, and this has produced some of the most memorable published scenarios in the game's history so far. Tournament style play can be difficult to arrange and execute properly, but if you get a chance to be a part of it, it is worth the effort in my opinion. In this episode I just wanted to geek out a bit about my appreciation for this style of play. From the fabled D&D Open which has long been a part of the game, if not every single year, to the PVP stylings of other 3rd party tournaments, this is a style of game that can really set your game or convention apart from the others. Welcome to the Saving Throes podcast! This is my Tabletop role-playing game podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. This week I found myself reading through this old booklet from my collection. I picked this one up many years ago and there was a ton of hype behind the advice on offer here. I had never taken the time to dive into this book though until very recently. Although very short at about 32 pages, this book (or rather, booklet) is dense on detail. It was published back in 2002, and the tabletop roleplaying industry was quite different back then. It is interesting to go over this time capsule to see what advice has aged well and survived to this day and which stuff didn't fare so well. Welcome to the Pining For Pixels podcast! This is my video game variety show podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. Each episode will feature a subject or theme that interests me, and I will speak about what is on my mind in the world of video games! I received my copy of the Tomb Raider Collection 2 for the Evercade early, so I decided to do a followup episode to one of my favourite carts for the platform. Once again, this is an impressive feat, stuffing huge PlayStation 1 games into a single Evercade cart. This time though, there is only 2 titles vs the prior entry having 3. It is understandable though, as the Tomb Raider title missing from this version of the collection is a PlayStation 2 game that wouldn't run here anyway, and the narrative of that game is a bit on it's own on top of that. I evaluate this cart on its own merits and how it stacks up to the other Evercade carts. This time we are at #96, and my pick for this one is the PC classic multiplayer shooter, Unreal Tournament. This was the game that really got me into multiplayer FPS games like no other. I had previously enjoyed games like Doom 2 via online PVP, although achieved through rudimentary connections. This game blew the doors open on what kind of gaming experience one could have in the genre. It was ahead of its time with the variety of game modes and brutal weapons, and really got me to experiment with different styles of play like sniper. This game will always hold a special place in my heart and I still fondly think back to it, pining for the game to return to modern platforms to relive the arcade twitch shooter style once more. In this new segment I will be looking at games that were were critically panned, but I thought were actually really good, or games that were critically praised that I strongly disliked, or were massively disliked or dismissed by the gaming community at large. For this inaugural entry into this segment, I am going to look at Ryse: Son of Rome, a launch game for the Xbox One back in the day. This game was critically panned and largely disliked by gamers. I almost didn't get it when I got the Xbox One, however, at the last minute I opted to give it a shot anyway, and am I ever glad that I did, because I loved it! March 3rd marks the 8 year anniversary of the Nintendo Switch, arguably one of the greatest video game consoles of all time. This little device today is recognized as a massive success and a money printing machine for Nintendo, but this wasn't always the case. At the time of launch, while there was a lot of excitment about Nintendo's impending release, there was also a lot of skepticism too, with good reason. Coming on the heels of one their biggest flops in history (the WiiU), the Switch was far from a sure thing. Oh this week's episode, I wanted to look into what house rules people are using these days. House rules are a long and glorious tradition for tabletop roleplaying games. Ever since the hobby began with the original D&D release in 1974, house rules have been baked in and expected at almost every table. It had been a while since I last looked up what house rules people were pushing, and in this day and age, as we are all connected via the internet, I fully expected a deluge of house rules and likely bickering about it. I was not disappointed! In fact I found such a large amount of house rule chatter that I decided to make this volume 1 of potentially many more Ritual of Scrying episodes. That said, it was certainly a nice brisk experience, and one that I think suited the book club series of episodes well! This series has a pretty dedicated base of fans, and a lot of it is driven by the nostalgia of playing this one when younger. I can completely see why this would leave such a lasting impression on someone, and even for me today, having experienced the game without having it spoiled, it still left an impression despite my lack of nostalgia for it. It's time for another entry in the top 100 as we slowly but surely count down the top 100 video games of all time. Star Fox was a game that you might find difficult to get into, but it was partially a case of "you had to be there". In the time that Star Fox was released, we had never seen anything that advanced looking on the SNES, nor any console before. Seeing was believing though, and the game, in true Nintendo fashion, was a well designed and tight playing rail shooter filled with personality and good replay value. So although today it isn't visually impressive, the gameplay is still as good as ever and worth your time, regardless of your experience with the franchise. Just as good was the next title in this franchise, Star Fox 64, but it all started with the SNES original. The final core rulebook in the revised 204/2025 D&D 5e lineup is now out at local game stores and soon to be everywhere. I picked up my copy recently and have had some time to look through it, compare it against what has come before, and particularly against what we had with its 2014 counterpart. I've got some good news.... but I also have some bad news. Much like the PHB and DMG before it, there are some missed opportunities in my opinion, but still, there is enough to like here as well that it might make you scratch your head a bit. If you have the original 5e 2014 core rulebooks, don't throw those out just yet! However, don't completely write these ones off either, particularly the new Monster Manual. Both of these games saw life as modern day retro releases on the Sega Genesis (seperately), getting a proper cartridge for the original hardware and everything. Now these 2 titles have been combined together for this newest Evercade release, and it is a match made in heaven. I was able to put them both through their paces. If you are a fan of the good ol' 16 bit days, and especially if you were a Sega kid growing up, you owe it to yourself to get this cart and play these 2 amazing games. I recently discovered this wonderful book after watching a recent episode of the YouTube "ACKS to Grind" podcast from Alexander Macris. Author John N McGowan was the featured guest and they discussed the topic of this book, and I was really impressed by the insights and discussion they had. I felt like they understood the kind of game that really appeals to me, so I immediately ordered a copy of his book "The Living Campaign" from Amazon (and it is a really nice price). After having had some time with it, I came to realize that this is a great resource for GMs all over who play in this style or want to know about this style. In fact, it is a great read for anyone with even a passing interest in this old school style, that is still alive and kicking today thanks to the OSR. This week I am taking a look at the rules modifications for the revised 2024/2025 version of 5e, from one of my favourite TTRPG creators and creator of Runehammer Games, Hankerin Ferinale (check out his website and shop at www.runehammer.online). He just posted a bunch of excellent tweaks you can apply to your game to spice things up considerably. These address some of my issues with the revised 5e rules, and suggest some brilliant workarounds. Some of these things made me do a double take, so when you read his article or listen to this episode, make sure to take a moment to truly consider what is being suggested. I think overall these mods create some really new and interesting play dynamics! With that said, I'm not on board with everything presented here. I was honestly surprised by how hard this was, especially after coming off of a particularly eventful 2023, I hadn't realized just how many good games we got in 2024 in comparison. Nonetheless, there can only be one at the top! In this case, I have 10 nominees, any of which could have just as easily been my number one pick, but like I said, there can be only one at the top.
