Cristiano Travaglioli's career is closely tied to that of Paolo Sorrentino: the two crossed paths from the very first feature film by the Neapolitan director, “L’uomo in più,” in 2001, when Cristiano was an editing assistant to Giogiò Franchini. It is starting with “Il Divo” (Cannes 2008) that he began his collaboration as an editor with Sorrentino. From “This Must Be The Place” (Cannes 2011) to the Oscar-winning “La grande bellezza” in 2014, through the successful series “The Young Pope” (2016) and “The New Pope” (2019), to the recent “È stata la mano di Dio,” which was nominated for the Oscars again in 2022 and won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2021 and 5 David di Donatello awards in 2022.
In addition to his work with Sorrentino, Cristiano has also collaborated with Francesco Munzi (“Anime Nere,” David di Donatello for Best Editing in 2015) and Pif (“La mafia uccide solo d’estate,” 2013).

Desideria Rayner began her editing career after several years of experience in journalism, collaborating, among others, on the Italian television program “Blob". At 30, without a proper academic background, editing came to her as a second life during a moment of reset. In short, it's never too late to become an editor! For the first time in our podcast, we will have not just one, but two guests, and for the first time, they will be directors. Alessandro Comodin and João Nicolau have developed a unique collaboration: both directors, they take on the role of editors to edit each other’s films. Benni Atria is a peculiar figure in Italian editing over the last few decades. Benni is both a film editor and a sound editor, and he still moves from one room to another, sometimes for the same film! Benni actually starts his adventure in cinema in the cinematography department, but like many of us, he realizes that the stress of the set is not for him. After his first experiences as an editing assistant (“Diavolo in corpo” by Marco Bellocchio, 1986), over the years, Benni has built some historic collaborations, particularly with Daniele Vicari (“Diaz- Don’t Clean Up This Blood”, David di Donatello for editing 2012) and Michelangelo Frammartino (“Il Buco”, Venice Film Festival 2021 and “Le quattro volte”, Cannes 2010). Marie-Hélène Dozo is a Belgian film editor, one of the most important figures in the European and international film landscape, and a member of the Oscars Academy Awards since 2016. Famous for her thirty-year collaboration with the Dardenne brothers, she has edited all of their films, including “Rosetta” (Palme d’Or at Cannes 1999), “L’enfant” (Palme d’Or at Cannes 2005), and “Tori and Lokita,” awarded at Cannes 2022. Marie-Hélène has often worked with debut directors, whose freshness and freedom she appreciates. One of them was Roberto Minervini in 2011 with “The Passage,” and their collaboration has produced landmark documentaries like “Stop The Pounding Heart” and “The Other Side,” continuing to this day. A globetrotting editor, Marie-Hélène has been able to move over the years from documentary to fiction, from Kinshasa to Jiabiangou, from Casablanca to Hollywood... Francesca Calvelli is the editor of numerous films and TV series by important Italian directors such as Marco Bellocchio, Francesca Comencini, and Saverio Costanzo, which has led her to win, among other awards, two David di Donatello and five Nastri d’argento. We started with her latest work, the editing of “Marx può aspettare” by Marco Bellocchio. A very intimate and courageous film, in which Francesca shares some fundamental choices made during the editing process and her initial fear of dealing with familiar and beloved people and characters. This provides an excellent starting point to broaden the conversation to more general themes: her first experience with documentaries, the importance of cataloging material, the emotional and empathetic ability to say “no” to the director, and the joy of editing music. Natalie Cristiani studied editing at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia. After working as an editing assistant, an experience she still considers fundamental to her training, she collaborated with directors such as Pappi Corsicato (“Pompeii: Sin City,” 2021), Mario Martone (“Capri-revolution,” 2018, with Jacopo Quadri), and Elisa Fuksas (“Nina,” 2012, “Isola,” 2020). She lived for several years in Argentina, where she met Ivan Gergolet, for whom she edited “Dancing with Maria” (2014, nominated for the European Film Awards for Best Documentary) and “L’uomo senza colpa”, 2022. Natalie has also edited several Netflix series, such as “Vivi e lascia vivere” (2020), “Fedeltà” (2022), and “Circeo” (2022). Since 2022, Natalie has been the president of the AMC – the Italian guild film and television editors. Letizia Caudullo is one of the most experienced Italian documentary editors, although her filmography is not limited to documentary filmmaking and includes several works of fiction, such as the cult film “Paz!” (2002, directed by Renato De Maria), edited alongside Jacopo Quadri, for whom she had previously worked as an assistant on “L’assedio” by Bernardo Bertolucci. In addition to her work as an editor, Letizia is also a lecturer in editing at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Rome, CSC in Palermo, and the Gian Maria Volonté School of Cinema in Rome. In this episode, we delved into the editing of two of the most beautiful Italian documentaries released in recent years, which Letizia edited: “Selfie” by Agostino Ferrente (David di Donatello for Best Documentary 2020) and “Il Migliore. Marco Pantani” by Paolo Santolini from 2021. Two documentaries with a starting corpus that is not easy to approach in order to create such emotional narratives: self-produced video selfies by the protagonists in the first case and talking heads in the second. There have been many sliding doors that Jacopo Quadri encountered at the beginning of his career. His work as an assistant director, a vacation in Capraia, the exam at the Centro Sperimentale in Rome, and a trip to China. All of these have led him to become one of the most prominent contemporary editors today. A long-time collaborator with several directors, including Mario Martone (among them, his latest work “Qui rido io,” 2021), Gianfranco Rosi (notable for the award-winning “Sacro GRA,” 2013, and “Fuocoammare,” 2016), and Alessandro Rossetto (“Effetto Domino,” 2019), Quadri admits he truly felt like an editor when he was called by Bertolucci to edit the film “L’assedio” (1998). That same year, he received a David di Donatello for his editing of “Teatro di guerra” by Mario Martone. Francesca Sofia Allegra became interested in editing when she realized it is not far removed from screenwriting. She has worked across various genres and formats: from documentaries to music videos, from commercials to trailers for fiction films. She now lives and works in London, where she was part of the editing teams for two important Italian documentary series: “Veleno” (directed by Hugo Berkeley, available on Amazon Prime since 2021) and “SanPa - Luci e tenebre di San Patrignano” (directed by Cosima Spender, available on Netflix since 2020). Cristiano Travaglioli's career is closely tied to that of Paolo Sorrentino: the two crossed paths from the very first feature film by the Neapolitan director, “L’uomo in più,” in 2001, when Cristiano was an editing assistant to Giogiò Franchini. It is starting with “Il Divo” (Cannes 2008) that he began his collaboration as an editor with Sorrentino. From “This Must Be The Place” (Cannes 2011) to the Oscar-winning “La grande bellezza” in 2014, through the successful series “The Young Pope” (2016) and “The New Pope” (2019), to the recent “È stata la mano di Dio,” which was nominated for the Oscars again in 2022 and won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2021 and 5 David di Donatello awards in 2022. Roberto Perpignani has collaborated with the Taviani brothers, Bernardo Bertolucci, Marco Bellocchio, Nanni Moretti, Gianni Amelio, Miklós Jancsó, and many others. He has won four David di Donatello awards (“La notte di San Lorenzo,” 1983; “Il postino,” 1995; “Marianna Ucria,” 1997; “Cesare deve morire,” 2012) and a Palme d'Or (“Padre Padrone,” 1977). Since editing his first film “Il processo” in that garage in Fregene, where Orson Welles told him not to think, six decades have passed. Today, alongside his work as an editor, Roberto pursues a passion for linguistic research. He has written texts in which he seeks to define what editing is - the phoenix of cinema - and in which he discusses art history, psychology, and even neuroscience. For years, Roberto taught at the Centro Sperimentale in Rome, training generations of editors - indeed, he has been the most cited editor by our guests. Esmeralda Calabria is one of the most experienced Italian editors, a three-time winner of the David di Donatello for Best Editing (“Fuori dal mondo” by Giuseppe Piccioni in 1999, “Romanzo Criminale” by Michele Placido in 2006 and “Favolacce” by D’Innocenzo brothers in 2021). She edited “La stanza del figlio” by Nanni Moretti (Palme d'Or at Cannes 2001), with whom she also collaborated on “Il caimano” and “Habemus Papam.” A lecturer at the Accademia Nazionale d’Arte Drammatica Silvio D’Amico, on a couple of occasions, Esmeralda has also managed the feat of doubling as both director and editor (“Biùtiful cauntri,” co-directed with Andrea D’Ambrosio and Peppe Ruggiero, and “Lievito madre: Le ragazze del secolo scorso,” co-directed with Concita De Gregorio). Among her recent works, we remember “Favolacce” by Damiano and Fabio D’Innocenzo (Best Screenplay at Berlinale 2020). Johannes was born and lives in Germany, but he studied film in Italy and took his first steps as an editor there. He was the assembling editor for Gianfranco Rosi on “Below Sea Level,” edited documentaries for Arte (“Das Wikipedia Versprechen” by Lorenza Castella and Jascha Hannover), and worked on the films of Alberto Fasulo, including “Rumore Bianco,” “Tir” (AMC Award for Best Editing at the Rome Film Festival 2013), “Genitori,” and “Menocchio.” For years, he has worked across the Alps, dedicating himself to both documentaries and fiction, developing - among other things - a aversion to underscores. Annalisa Forgione has never abandoned her passions for writing, cinema, and study. Enrico Giovannone is one of those mythical creatures, half editor and half producer. In practice, he is one of the few editors who can hire his own director! He was indeed the producer of his editing debut “Rata nece biti!” by Daniele Gaglianone, thus inaugurating a long partnership with the Turin-born director, both in documentary (“Dove bisogna stare,” 2019) and in fiction (“Ruggine,” 2011 and “La mia classe,” 2013). Enrico edited “Rada” by Alessandro Alba Legnazzi (Best Italian Documentary at the Turin Film Festival 2014) and “Noci sonanti” by Damiano Giacomelli and Lorenzo Raponi, the latter together with Aline Hervé.
