During another Woke Wine Hour with your lovely hosts Sadé and Malcolm, they enjoy some wine while watching the fall of democracy, I mean election night, in the United States. Okay, a lot of wine. And they might take a swig every time the anchorperson says "It's too early to tell". Their anxiety was acting up, alright?! However, they take this time to discuss some of the issues they felt were the most pressing or heavy on their hearts going into this crucial election, such as voting behaviors amongst key demographics such as white women (we already knew white men would let us down as usual), Black women, and Black men (especially Black men celebrities who have endorsed Trump), the tension amongst voters vs. non-voters in the Black community, and how Joe Biden and Kamala Harris might work to rectify the enormous harms that their support of the prison industrial system has caused if and when they are elected President and Vice President. (Side note: the first 60 minutes or so was recorded on Election Night, November 3rd, 2020. One of our lovely hosts falls asleep abruptly, so they come back to wrap up their thoughts on November 4th, still with no winner declared). It's a lengthy one, just like this presidential race, so crack open a bottle of wine with us and enjoy!

This week in The Absolute Ghetto, Malcolm and Sadé give their first movie review for One Night in Miami, the directional debut of Regina King. This movie depicts a fictional account of a conversation between the Black legends Malcolm X, Cassius Clay (before changing his name to Muhammad Ali), NFL star Jim Brown, and singer Sam Cooke, especially known for “A Change Is Gonna Come”. After starting with our general opinion of the movie and a discussion of it's creative merits, we pose the question: Does a fictional account of real Black liberation leaders matter in the same way as biographies and tributes to them more firmly grounded in actual events? And if it does matter, how so? We do this through exploring 5 main themes we gleaned from the movie: Humanization, High-Class Racism, Appropriate Usage of Power and Influence, and The True Meaning of Black Liberation. Join us in celebrating this imaginative account of what being a fly on the wall of the conversations between these real-life brothers in-love may have looked like. The Absolute Ghetto is back with our first episode of 2021! 2020 was rough, so what better way to kick off this year with a Woke Wine Hour about a topic everyone loves to kiki about amongst their friends: relationships and sexuality! We believe that embracing the joys of romance, intimacy, and sexuality is one way to practice radical self love, especially as a Black person bearing the burden of marginalization and oppression 24/7. Black culture is even innovative regarding the ways we talk about sex and relationships (bae, talking, cuffed, entanglements, go together, spitting game, caking, etc.). But the vagueness of some of these terms represents how complicated and confusing the dating scene can be. Socialization also causes many to internalize “truths” about sexual “purity”, marriage, monogamy, etc, and it can be difficult to tell the difference between your true desires and what desires you’ve either internalized due to culture or even trauma. That’s impossible to unpack in one sitting, but we find just asking each other fun and challenging questions about relationships and sexuality (in general and individually), is a great way to explore these things and even unlearn habits and thought processes that no longer serve us on our journey to true freedom in intimacy. Of course, we frame some questions within the context of the global pandemic and how it may affect dating and/or sexual behavior. And we have a special guest, Daryl Williams, who has some unique perspectives about dating and recently had a TikTok about relationships go viral with over 8.5 million views, to help us do that! Feel free to sip and laugh with us! Also this episode was been recorded over Zoom and is on Youtube!!! link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqCChc6uk3Q (SN: we apologize for the dimished quality of the audio, recording over Zoom instead of through mics caused the quality to go down a bit but it will be back up to par for episode 2. The white supremacy system in place throughout the diaspora is designed to alienate, control, and destroy Black bodies. This week in the Absolute Ghetto, Sadé and Malcolm seek to thoroughly address concerns regarding the impending COVID-19 vaccine that has now been official approved for distribution by the FDA (Pfizer Inc’s vaccine, specifically). The purpose of this episode is to contextualize the response amongst some Black people to news about the development and distribution of the vaccine. Their goal is to contextualize and validate why the Black American community has skepticism towards and grievances with the medical industry, and discuss ways the industry, Black leaders, and the community as a whole can ameliorate this damaged relationship so that we can save the lives of Black people, as the Black community has been heavily affected by COVID at higher rates medically and economically. They will be discussing: 1) Medical racism, 2) Disease-related Conspiracy theories and spiritual/ideological hustlers, with special focus on Dr. Sebi, 3) The disparate impact of COVID19 on the Black community, 4) How Black leaders and healthcare professionals are trying to improve skeptic’s trust in the science behind the vaccine, 5) Potential concerns about the distribution of the vaccine with an eye on class and privilege. This week in The Absolute Ghetto, Sadé and Malcolm discuss the True Kitchen controversy and respectability politics. On November 29th, 2020, footage surfaced of the manager (Kevin Kelley) of True Kitchen in Dallas, Texas, ranting at a party of Black women and the rest of the restaurant after the women had been twerking to "Back Dat Azz Up" as the DJ blared the booty-shaking classic in the restaurant. As a Black-owned establishment that proclaims to cater to Black people and the fun-loving Black Brunch™ culture, the manager's response, in which he suggested that the women twerking do not respect themselves, sparked debate regarding whether he was in the wrong. Sadé and Malcolm recognize this as a prime opportunity to highlight the prevalence of respectability politics in the Black community, and the oppressive characteristics of respectability theory. They discuss how respectability politics falls short in practice in the True Kitchen fiasco and beyond, how it differs from "racial uplift", and the importance of looking beyond individual choice to address systemic factors that oppress Black communities in a white supremacist system. This week in The Absolute Ghetto, Sadé and Malcolm discuss the now infamous shooting incident between rappers Megan thee Stallion and Tory Lanez through the lens of intersectionality. The term intersectionality was coined in 1989 by Kimberlé Crenshaw (a Black woman), providing an innovative framework with which to analyze and address the forces at play when one has two or more intersecting identities. Using this framework, they detail bigoted public responses (e.g. transphobia & misogynoir) to Megan's victimization, the pervasiveness of patriarchy that is embedded in the community of women rappers, despite seemingly liberating hoe-aesthetics, and what it means to #ProtectBlackWomen without relying on harmful patriarchal ideals or the mass incarceration system that continues to damage Black communities disproportionately. In the age of the stallion, as in women who stand tall, loud, and proud in their sexuality, bodies, identities, and opinions, there are people who want to knock these women off their "high horse", wounding them. Through intersectionality, we can learn from, heal, and even prevent these wounds. Malcolm and Sadé explain their conceptualization of "The Absolute Ghetto". They detail their journeys to rejecting elitist narratives about Black people they'd been exposed to throughout their childhoods, and how attending Howard University facilitated this process. Show notes: ~"Why Are All The Black Kids Sitting Together In The Cafeteria?: And Other Conversations About Race" by Beverly Daniels Tatum (1999) ~Absolutely Ghetto Org of the Week: Black Innovation Alliance (www.blackinnovationalliance.com) *Note to listeners: we sincerely apologize for the somewhat wonky audio. We're podcast beginners, and we weren't aware of the issue while recording. We felt our first take flowed so well, so we decided to do our best to edit the audio instead of scrapping it. Future episodes will be CLEAR! We promise :) --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-absolute-ghetto/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-absolute-ghetto/support…
