Today we are joined by Dr Fiona Kerr, Founder and CEO of the Neurotech Institute, and leading futurist and author Steve Sammartino in our first double header with previous guests. Fiona was interviewed in episode 11 of Real People and Steve in episode 16. This most certainly was an explosion of thinking as Fiona and Steve shared their observations of the world in chaos and what this means moving forward. We discuss a huge amount in a rollercoaster chat from digital sovereignty to how well Australia is performing at a global scale. We discuss the hunger games of the US and lessons as to how to take a longer-term perspective can be learnt from places like Finland. We ponder is Australia more like the US or Europe? And, does Australia's safe stability make us lucky or lazy? We discuss systems thinking and blind spots. What future capitalism will look like. And, the high likelihood we will just slot back into comfortable old ways, even with the pause during COVID-19 to slow down and think about better ways moving forward. Today we are joined by Distinguished Professor Genevieve Bell, Director of the 3A Institute at ANU in Canberra, a collaboration with CSIRO's Data61, with the mission of building a new applied science around the management of artificial intelligence, data, technology and their impact on humanity. Genevieve is also Senior Fellow, New Technology Group at Intel, since joining Intel as a researcher to conduct ethnographic research in 1998. This is a most fascinating discussion about the world in chaos, how we are adjusting and what might come. We discuss key themes such as contact tracing and mass surveillance, and how critical it is that our communities embrace to fight COVID-19. We explore how the devastating Australian bushfires and now COVID-19 have shone the light on our vulnerabilities and segments of the community that were already falling through the cracks dealing with inequality, personal dangers and complexities, and the role of the government in supporting this. Genevieve shares her perspective on how Australia has dealt with COVID-19 compared with other parts of the world, and how it is near impossible to understand the situation without more data and stable models. Today we are joined by Dr Rebecca Huntley, one of Australia's foremost researchers on social trends. A regular media commentator and writer, including for the Quarterly Essay of March 2019, in which she explored how Australians are calling for change from our government in climate change and wider social issues, and the corruption of democracy. Rebecca is the author of numerous books, including 'How to Talk About Climate Change in a Way That Makes a Difference,' Still Lucky and The World According to Y. We discuss the changes that may come from the chaos of bushfires then COVID-19, some thinking around how Australia and Australians have responded well to a pandemic, and ponder 'are we still lucky?' We discuss fairness vs freedom and the likely shift in thinking towards Australia seeking a greater level of self-sufficiency moving forward, and the wider impact on our cultural values. Today we are joined by JP, John-Paul Drake Director of Drakes Supermarkets. We go on a fabulous journey going back to JP's entrepreneurial childhood, hear about riding the retail rodeo of the past few months, and how a bit of right place right time luck is awesome. We try to make sense of all the crazy hoarding and hear about JP's global social media attention for his one finger salute at the man wanting a refund on 150 packs of toilet paper. This is a great chat about the importance of agility in business, standing up for your staff, particularly against the rare arse of a customer, how the waves seem be bringing consumer sentiment back to 'buy local' and how JP and the Drakes team are leveraging this now and into the future. We talk about marketing and authenticity against the supermarket juggernauts and a whole lot more. Today we are joined by Brent Hill, the Executive Director of Marketing at the South Australian Tourism Commission. The leader behind recent campaigns 'book them out' responding to the devastating bushfires, and SA TV sharing content from across South Australia, responding to the 'stay at home' COVID-19 pandemic. Brent could have never imagined being involved in a tourism campaign to encourage people to stay at home, but that's the situation at the moment and for the foreseeable future. How does a tourism team deal with such a predicament? This is a most fascinating discussion about marketing and leadership in a topsy turvy world, including empowering the team to ever seek inspiration, and to unlock Edward de Bono's thinking caps, and not overusing the black hat, encouraging tourism operators to share their story through compelling content, that nowadays does not always need to be of the highest production standards. And, stimulating joy in challenging times is critical. Encouraging people to support local producers through online purchasing of artisan wine, gin, food and other products is important to build connection, and to build a huge appetite for travelling South Australia's wonderful regions once the restrictions are removed. A discussion about marketing and joy in a world of uncertainty and chaos. Real People is a podcast hosted by Jason Dunstone, the founder and managing director of Square Holes. He's a former Strategy Planner at Saatchi and Saatchi, Co-Founder and Global Head of Strategy at Naked Communications, current Board member of Tribe, and Co Founder of the Market Science Ideas Xchange and more. We discuss Adam's take on these crazy times we are all presently living through, and how it is hard to predict what new behaviours will stick and which will revert back. How will consumer behaviours change as a result of COVID 19? Adam shares some insight as to why leaders should stop listening to their customers, but rather be confident and true to the brand and what makes it distinctive. We discuss how user centred design and CX is often more so about boring efficiency than better for the brand or the customer. Today we are joined by Olga Kudryashova. Olga started her career at Saatchi and Saatchi Hungary and since had an impressive brand and communications strategy career across the Middle East and North Africa, including time living and working from Dubai for leading agencies Y&R, Saatchi & Saatchi and ODG. A fascinating discussion starting back at Olga's childhood as a smart girl in the Soviet Union loving art and dreaming of becoming an art restorer, going on to study a Master of Arts, then a Master of Science, then an MBA, and then the planets aligned and her career vision for the future in 'advertising' appeared like a bright shining star. Olga and Jason discuss and eclectic array of topics from cultural differences and consistencies, to strategic thinking, creativity, risk aversion and what makes a good or even great marketing team and advertising agency, particularly in this dramatically ever changing world. Today we are joined by Olivia Dryden, jeweller and taxidermy artist. Since graduating from Adelaide College of the Arts in 2014, Olivia's career has advanced significantly and she has receive acclaim and recognition for her work. You can find Olivia's website at oliviadrydenjewellery.com Olivia has travelled to India in 2015 for the Helpmann Academy 'Sanskriti Kendra Residency'. The six week residency was an opportunity to escape, be ripped out of her comfort zone and thrown into a world of culture, colour, religion, contrast and overall, just an amazing country. Olivia was also recently awarded one of the inaugural Helpmann Academy Fellowships, supported by the James and Diana Ramsay Foundation valued at up to $20,000 each. This fellowship allowed Olivia to spend three months in London establishing connections and networking opportunities to further develop skills in taxidermy and jewellery making. Olivia's beautiful art comes from a curiosity with death, which arose when she started researching the Victorian Memento Mori period from the 15th to 18th century. She admired the symbolism they used to depict death, like the skull-and-crossbones and the hourglass. She was especially interested in the jewellery that was made using the deceased's hair, and the post-mortem photography. She loved how such a taboo subject, death, could be shown in such a beautiful way. Olivia has had a solo exhibition at 'Life After Death' at Hill Smith Gallery and her jewellery is available in many jewellery stores. We go on a wonderful journey from a childhood loving art, and how Olivia's thirst to keep learning and see the world differently continues and will ever continue. In a profession where only 2% make it, Olivia's passion, network and entrepreneurship is seeing her triumph even with the challenge that comes with life as an artist. Today we are joined by Simon K Burt aka STĪLES.BE, a contemporary artist from Australia. Simon has previously worked under the name STORRE in the graffiti art movement since the 1990s, and has evolved his style to take the elements of his street art and reinterprets them in his own unique style balancing precision and imperfection. You can find more info at stilesbe.com. This is a great interview to kick off a few episodes exploring art and creativity. Simon recently completed a piece of street art we commissioned on the front of our building. Go to our social media for pics. We hear about childhood loving art, and soon fascinated by graffiti. We explore topics such as street art, graffiti or vandalism, and that true creativity and life is about experiences, not coming to conclusions and keeping the child alive. Real People, With Jason Dunstone - Consumer Insights, Market Research, Customers, Design Thinking and More

Today we are joined by James Fergusson, the CEO of MDI (https://www.mdi-global.com) a mobile focused research company launched in 2013. MDI is based in Melbourne, with offices in Cape Town, Miami, Utah, Washington DC and recently launching their European presence from London. MDI has developed and is continuously evolving its own proprietary mobile research platform, and has worked with some of the world's largest consumer brands. This was a very enjoyable chat. I first met James back in 1994 when I started my career in market research at Frank Small and Associates in Melbourne. We were both wide-eyed young researchers, discovering market research somewhat by chance. It's nice to sit down 25 years, and eight kids later (six of these James') to chat. James has enjoyed a highly successful career in market research, including being based in Singapore for seven years in global executive roles for TNS / Kantar with a focus on technology and emerging markets. We discuss James' early days as an entrepreneurial kid mowing the lawns of neighbours to buy lollies and other joys the money brings. And, that a successful career is seldom linear or predictable, and it's best to just embrace the ride. James shares his perspective on the massive impact on research mobile phones have had over the past decade in the developed and developing world, and how this informed the strategy and innovation behind MDI. We hear about the story of MDI, and some lessons for those seeking to build a global facing business from Australia, including how to overcome our innate cultural risk aversion. A fascinating discussion about innovation in consumer insight past, present and the uncertain future. We go way back to Ainslie's childhood as a young girl who loved to stare at other people and how this deep curiosity as to what makes others tick lead her to a successful career in research. We discuss the joys of being allowed into people's lives, their homes and to listen to their stories and views. This is a fascinating discussion about the patterns in human attitudes and behaviours Ainslie has observed over her two decades in research. And her interest from a young age in how different people can be. We discuss the joys and complexity of creating software and bringing together Qualie's research and technology skill-sets to build towards the vision to scale globally. Qualie has featured in the Australian financial review and other media, raised significant investment funding including many notable supporters, and boasts clients from Coca Cola to Google. Today we are joined by former Netflix marketer Barry Enderwick for a fascinating discussion about growth in uncertainty. Including the role of evidence-based insight in guiding the best way forward. Barry and I sat down for coffee at the Hilton Sydney in a break in the annual Australian Market and Social Research Society Conference. Barry is a passionate advocate of the role of robust research in disruptive business, and critically asking the right questions that the incumbent often miss, and is unable to respond to. We discuss Barry's 11 years at Netflix while it scaled globally and disrupted large default competitors at the time. A fascinating discussion as to why cashed up establishment such as Blockbuster didn't see the end approaching and why such businesses are slow to respond to the more hungry and agile innovators. A great story of strong leadership triumphing. Real People is a podcast hosted by Jason Dunstone, the founder and managing director of Square Holes. Today we are joined by Stephen Scheeler! Former Facebook and Instagram MD for Australia and New Zealand, Senior Advisor at McKinsey & Co and TEDx Speaker. Stephen and I sat down at the Sydney office of McKinsey and Co to have a fascinating discussion going back to Stephen's childhood in small town USA. And, how he longed to go to university in Europe, yet was awarded a Scholarship to study in Japan, and how this introverted young man became the American everyone wanted to know - from fellow students to the local mayor. We hear how Stephen's study of east Asian history and with little interest in tech, he found himself entering the world of tech juggernauts. We discuss the obsession of the likes of Facebook in being THE employer of choice, requires putting staff contentment at the top of strategic priorities. And, how staff incentives from free food for staff and families, to the option for female staff to freeze their embryos have become the norm in Silicon Valley, to take the distractions away from a high performing team. We explore the importance of a vision staff can truly believe in and thrive towards. And, the fine line between a strong culture and cult like faith in such young, wealthy and almost magical leaders.
