In this episode, we delve into the concept of being "qualified" in the workplace, examining who gets labeled as such, who doesn't, and the underlying reasons. We explore "competency checking"āthe practice of scrutinizing individuals' abilitiesāand how it disproportionately affects underrepresented groups, often going unnoticed or unchallenged. Our discussion aims to redefine qualifications in a fair, equitable, and actionable manner. Our guest, Shari Dunn , is an accomplished journalist, former attorney, news anchor, CEO, university professor, and sought-after speaker. She has been recognized as Executive of the Year and a Woman of Influence, with her work appearing in Fortune Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Ad Age, and more. Her new book, Qualified: How Competency Checking and Race Collide at Work , unpacks what it truly means to be deserving and capableāand why systemic barriers, not personal deficits, are often the real problem. Her insights challenge the narratives that hold so many of us back and offer practical solutions for building a more equitable future. Together, we can build workplaces and communities that donāt just reflect the world we live in, but the one we want to create. A world where being qualified is about recognizing the talent and potential thatās been overlooked for far too long. Itās not just about getting a seat at the tableāitās about building an entirely new table, one designed with space for all of us. In today's episode of the podcast I talk with the very talented (and highly accomplished), multi-instrumentalist/singer/songwriter -St. Paul Petterson. Among the huge list of St. Paul's credits you will see some massive 'superstar' type names like - Morris Day, Darryl Hall, George Benson, The Corrs and Peter Frampton, but the thing that needs to be brought to your attention (at least in my opinion), is the fact that at only 17 years old, Paul was hand picked by the (now late, but always great) Prince to join 'The Time' for the Purple Rain movie. This of course led to many work related affiliations with Prince before St. Paul eventually became a successful singer and songwriter in his own right with labels like MCA and Atlantic. Paul also has his own podcast (with a similar theme to this one) entitled 'Music On The Run, which I strongly encourage you to check out. Roy Burns was an American born drummer and percussion manufacturer who sadly passed away back in 2018. He would have been 89 years old this week, so to celebrate all things Roy and thank him for years of personal inspiration I decided to use an unpublished/archived interview that I had done with him many years ago for episode #58 of the podcast. Roy was the second person to grace the cover of the world famous Modern Drummer magazine and rose to fame playing with artists like Benny Goodman and Woody Herman before eventually becoming the house drummer for television standards like the Tonight show and the Merv Griffin Show. Eventually (in 1980) after leaving the Tonight show, he went on to start the Aquarian drum head company alongside Ron Marquez.
