The first day of summer classes for the city's public elementary and middle school students is on Tuesday — and 50 percent more students have been recommended to attend this year than were last year.

About for 34,000 students were recommended to attend summer school this year based on their performance on the state's annual math and reading tests in grades 3 through 8 — 22,802 were recommended last year.

The results for this year aren't out yet, but principals are able to make estimates.

Last year, the state made the tests harder to pass as part of its push to raise standards. Chancellor Dennis Walcott said most of this year's students will get the help they need to pass the state exams when they're offered again in August.

"People are very concentrated in their educational attention to these students and we're confident the majority of these students will meet the threshold we'll set for them," he said.

The budget for summer school is $52 million, $5 million more than last year. But a Department of Education spokesman said that's enough because the biggest cost is for keeping the school open. He also said principals should be able to maximize their resources to avoid an increase in class sizes.
