Ever wonder really lies beneath the Great Sphinx? What secrets are hidden in Tesla’s lost notebooks? And seriously, where did they put the Ark of the Covenant? Hey, I’m Luke and spend my time writing adventure novels and daydreaming about ancient mysteries (Probably 30% writing, 70% daydreaming). The Adventure Story Podcast is my excuse to talk with the dreamers and the doers of adventure—those who craft epic quests from their laptops, and real-world explorers who laugh in the face of GPS. Plus, I'll share some of the misadventures that inspired my books and look back on some of the classic adventure stories we all know and love. Each episode is part Indiana Jones, part behind-the-scenes adventure novel, and part late-night conspiracy session—but with better jokes and less tin foil. *Disclaimer: This podcast is based on true events. Maybe. Possibly. Okay, probably not. But that's half the fun. For fictional international adventures, check out my books: https://www.lukerichardsonauthor.com/ I’m also on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lukerichardsonauthor/ Or email: hello@lukerichardsonauthor.com

The Adventure Story Podcast: For lovers of Adventure, Archaeology, and Historical Mysteries.

What if the greatest archaeological discovery in human history has been hiding in plain sight for over 140 years—disguised as a Victorian novel? In 1876, a brilliant translator named George Smith reportedly died in the Syrian desert. But two years later, an anonymous manuscript surfaced in America… filled with knowledge no one should’ve had. Today, we’re following a trail of stolen tablets, faked deaths, and forbidden secrets—clues that suggest one of archaeology’s most explosive discoveries was deliberately buried. And the evidence? It might still be out there, waiting to be uncovered. This episode wraps up Season One of the Adventure Story Podcast . To survive and learn the truth, she must uncover a manuscript that powerful people will do anything to keep buried. But this time the world is watching, and the stakes couldn't be higher. The Adventure Story Podcast: For lovers of Adventure, Archaeology, and Historical Mysteries.

From the icy edges of the Arctic to the roaring spectacle of the 1939 World’s Fair, James Richardson’s The Valhalla Key takes readers on a whirlwind ride through hidden history, Norse myth, and golden-age thrills. But how much of this epic is rooted in truth—and what inspired Richardson to set his story on the edge of war? In this episode, we sit down with the author-adventurer himself to explore the real-life research, legends, and historical obsessions (looking at you, Nazi occultism) behind the novel. We talk classic adventure storytelling, lost civilizations, and what it takes to capture that pulpy, globe-trotting spirit on the page. Richardson shares stories from his own expeditions—volcanoes, jungles, ancient ruins—and gives us a behind-the-scenes look at how his archaeology background fuels his fiction. If you’re a fan of Indiana Jones, ancient secrets, or stories where myth collides with history, this is one you don’t want to miss. An ancient secret. A Nazi death squad. A race to stop the end of the world. As war looms, New York P.I. Jackson Raine is pulled into a deadly hunt for a lost Norse relic—said to unlock the Hall of Valhalla itself. From the World's Fair to the Arctic ice, he’s up against gangsters, spies, and SS killers. The prize? A power that could unleash Ragnarök. The Valhalla Key is a pulse-pounding historical thriller packed with golden-age adventure. Buy now and uncover the secret before it's too late. Episode Takeaways: James Richardson's novel, 'The Valhalla Key', expertly intertwines elements of history, myth, and adventure. The setting of 1939 serves as both a pivotal moment in history and a rich backdrop for the narrative. Researching historical settings such as the World's Fair requires extensive investigation into archival materials. The characters in 'The Valhalla Key' navigate a world filled with both tangible and mythical challenges, emphasizing the blend of fiction and reality. The concept of keys in Norse mythology reflects deeper themes of unlocking knowledge and destiny throughout the narrative. James Richardson's personal adventures and archaeological background significantly inform his storytelling approach in 'The Valhalla Key'. Got a Story Idea? The Adventure Story Podcast: For lovers of Adventure, Archaeology, and Historical Mysteries.

In this episode of The Adventure Story Podcast , I sit down with thriller author Andrew Warren to dive into one of the world’s most enthralling cities—Tokyo. We explore what makes Tokyo such a captivating backdrop for storytelling and how Andrew strikes the balance between cultural authenticity and fast-paced fiction. Andrew shares vivid memories from his time in Tokyo that shaped the novel, along with insights into how he weaves setting, character values, and action into his books. We also delve into the research behind writing about the Yakuza, and how Andrew blends gritty realism with the cinematic flair that keeps readers turning the pages! Whether you’re a fan of thrillers, fascinated by Tokyo, or just love a good story well told, this episode is for you. Tokyo Black by Andrew Warren is available here . Here's what it's all about: Thomas Caine was the CIA’s deadliest killer. Then he was burned, betrayed, and left for dead. Now he survives off the grid, currently in Pattaya, Thailand. But when a feud with local criminals lands him in jail, his old CIA masters return with an offer he can’t refuse… Rot in a Thai prison, or accept one last mission in Tokyo, Japan. Forced to hunt the neon-lit city for a CIA asset’s runaway daughter, Caine soon crosses paths with a sinister faction of the yakuza crime syndicate and finds himself drawn into a terror plot that could throw the US and Japan into chaos. But Caine knows a double cross when he sees one. He’s convinced someone in the CIA is manipulating him from behind the scenes. Someone who knows his past in intimate detail. But this time, he’s not going down without a fight… Takeaways: Tokyo Black captures Tokyo’s unique blend of ancient shrines and high-tech sprawl, reflecting the city’s layered identity. Themes of honor, duty, and redemption run through the story, reflecting the protagonist’s search for moral clarity. Andrew's book taps into Japanese mythology, specifically the koi fish that transforms into a dragon to mirror the hero’s journey. Andrew's research into the Yakuza included books, films, and Japanese video games, helping him avoid clichés while keeping things dramatic! Got a Story Idea? What would you give to live forever? A lock of hair? A drop of blood? Your soul? Blending gripping fiction with chilling real-life accounts, I'll unraveling the strange, unsettling truths behind mankind’s age-old desire to cheat death. 🩸 From medieval castles to Silicon Valley labs, the pursuit of eternal life has taken some truly bizarre turns. Hit play to hear: The horrifying legend of Countess Báthory , said to have bathed in blood to preserve her youth The disturbing practice of parabiosis , and why tech billionaires are paying for the blood of the young The rise and fall of Dr. Serge Voronoff , who implanted monkey testicles in wealthy men during the 1920s Qin Shi Huang , China’s first emperor, who died from his own immortality potion—and built a booby-trapped tomb that has never been opened Isaac Newton’s secret obsession with alchemy, the philosopher’s stone, and the fine line between genius and madness But what if immortality isn’t just legend? What if someone actually found the secret? In Shadow of the Sunstone, my collaboration with thriller writer John Hopton, we explore this in all its detail: Eternal youth. Forbidden science. In this episode of The Adventure Story Podcast , I'm joined by travel writing legend, Rolf Potts. We have an insightful conversation about the unpredictable magic of travel and storytelling—from jumping trains and sleeping in vans to drinking kava in Vanuatu and chasing the trans-Siberian express, Rolf shares the real stories behind his adventures, and how he shapes those moments into compelling narratives. We explore the art of slow travel, the ethics of writing about cultures that aren’t your own, and why the unexpected moments are often the most unforgettable. Whether you're a seasoned traveler, an aspiring writer, or just someone who dreams of far-off places, this episode is packed with heart, humor, and wisdom! Vagabonding by Rolf Potts is available here. Here’s what it’s all about: Vagabonding is about taking an extended time away from your normal life to discover and experience the world on your own terms. Veteran shoestring traveler, Rolf Potts shows you how anyone with an independent spirit can achieve the dream of extended overseas travel. Rolf shares how you can finance your travel time, determine your destination, adjust to life on the road and much more. Takeaways: Early adventures, especially your first, often leave the most lasting impact, regardless of age, the emotional resonance of those initial experiences is unmatched. Letting go of strict itineraries allows space for unplanned, often magical encounters that become the heart of the best travel stories. Writing about other cultures involves honoring their realities while translating the experience for a Western audience, without exoticizing or distorting the truth. From the No Baggage Challenge to playing bagpipes in Cuba, Rolf reminds us that the best adventures are about the journey itself, not the destination. Got a Story Idea? The Adventure Story Podcast: For lovers of Adventure, Archaeology, and Historical Mysteries.

In this episode of The Adventure Story Podcast , I'm joined by Andrew Clawson, bestselling author of thrillers and adventure novels, for a captivating deep dive into the enigmatic Emerald Tablet. We explore the tablet's myth, tracing the mysterious artifact’s journey through time—from its rumored roots in ancient Egyptian and Greek mythology to its influence during the Persian Empire. Andrew reveals how this powerful symbol of alchemy and ancient wisdom has inspired his storytelling, and how it weaves into the plots of his gripping novels. We also discuss undiscovered ancient civilizations and their influence on adventure storytelling! The Emerald Tablet by Andrew Clawson is available here . Here's what it's all about: An ancient Persian relic. A message etched in stone. A deadly quest across the globe to reveal the forbidden truth. Recovering ancient relics for the Italian mob can be deadly. When Harry Fox narrowly outwits a thieving artifacts dealer to escape with his life, he quickly discovers he came away with more than he bargained for. The stone tablet with a strange tale etched on it tells of lost knowledge from the cradle of civilization – the ancient Persian Empire. If Harry Fox thought hunting artifacts for the mob was dangerous, he has no idea what’s in store as he hurtles toward disaster to uncover the truth behind the Emerald Tablet. Takeaways: The Emerald Tablet is a legendary idea more than a real artifact, tied to alchemy and mysterious ancient wisdom. Its most famous line is “As above, so below,” hinting at a link between the cosmos and the human soul. It was likely written in Arabic around the 6th–8th century and later translated into Latin, fueling Renaissance interest in alchemy. It blends Egyptian, Greek, and Islamic thought, showing how ancient cultures influenced one another. Though short, the tablet’s dense symbolism has inspired centuries of mystical, philosophical, and scientific interpretations. Got a Story Idea? In the early hours of May 20, 2010, a lone figure scaled the walls of the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris and vanished into the galleries. In this episode of the Adventure Story Podcas t, I'm joined by filmmaker and global adventurer Jon Beardmore as we explore one of the Galapagos Islands’ most fascinating traditions, Post Office Bay. Dating back centuries, this unique spot once served as an unofficial mail system where sailors would leave handwritten letters in a wooden barrel, hoping the next passing ship would deliver them. Inspired by this legacy, Jon set out to revive the tradition with a bold and heartfelt twist: collecting 55 letters from Post Office Bay and hand-delivering them across the globe. His mission took him to 52 countries, forging unexpected friendships, navigating cultural borders, and reconnecting with the human spirit in its purest form. Along the way, Jon also raised awareness and funds for Motor Neuron Disease and ALS, giving his journey even deeper meaning! Give to Jon’s fundraiser here: https://www.justgiving.com/page/galapagospostmanuk From uplifting reunions to tense border crossings, this episode is a powerful reminder that in a world dominated by digital communication, handwritten letters and the connections they forge still matter. Check out more of Jon's adventures on Instagram. Takeaways: Post Office Bay has operated as a sailor's mailbox since the 1700s, relying on the honor system and human goodwill. Each letter represented a personal story, carried not just by Jon, but by the spirit of those who once trusted strangers with their words. Even in our tech-saturated world, the power of a handwritten message remains timeless. Got a Story Idea? The Adventure Story Podcast: For lovers of Adventure, Archaeology, and Historical Mysteries.

On this episode of The Adventure Story Podcast , we're heading back to medieval Paris for one of the most dramatic exits in history. Picture this: a cold March morning in 1314, a massive crowd gathered on the Île de la Cité, and Jacques de Molay—the last Grand Master of the Knights Templar—chained to a pyre in the shadow of Notre Dame. As the flames rise, Molay doesn’t scream. He speaks. And what he says? It sounds like a curse. We dive deep into the infamous Templar Curse —the chilling prophecy Molay delivered moments before his death. Did it really doom a pope, a king, and an entire dynasty? Or is it all just a medieval mic drop with some seriously spooky timing? Along the way, we unravel the rise and fall of the Templars, their legendary treasure (maybe even in the Americas 👀), and the mysterious underground world of Portugal’s secret Templar sites. History, myth, fire, and a bit of revenge from beyond the grave? Yeah, we’re into it. The Templar Enigma, by ME, Luke Richardson, If you've enjoyed the mystery and intrigue of this episode, I think you'll love my book, The Templar Enigma. Here's what it's all about: A TEMPLAR CURSE. AN ANCIENT PROPHECY. A PULSE-POUNDING RACE AGAINST TIME. In 1314, a dying Grand Master swore vengeance. Now, the curse is awakening... When a modern-day Templar descendant unearths the key to unlocking that ancient power—the legendary Seal of Solomon—he sets in motion a plan that could collapse the modern world. Only one person stands in his way. Enter Eden Black —archaeologist, adventurer, and accidental hero. As the countdown to global chaos begins, Eden races from forgotten crypts to desert ruins, unraveling a conspiracy centuries in the making. But as she gets closer to the truth, she realizes the greatest secret of all… is her own. If you’re into ancient mysteries, secret societies, and edge-of-your-seat adventure, The Templar Enigma is your next obsession. Join the quest today! Takeaways: The Templars, at their zenith, represented the first multinational corporation in history. Jacques de Molay's execution in 1314 marked the beginning of a significant historical changes. The Templar curse seemingly manifested through the swift demise of Pope Clement V post-execution. King Philip IV of France suffered a fatal accident shortly after condemning Jacques de Molay. The unexpected deaths of Philip's sons led to the collapse of a royal dynasty. The theories surrounding the Templar treasure continue to spark intrigue and speculation today. Got a Story Idea? The Adventure Story Podcast: For lovers of Adventure, Archaeology, and Historical Mysteries.

In this episode of the Adventure Story Podcas t, I'm joined by archaeologist and author Sean McLachlan. We delve into 1919 Cairo, Egypt, discussing the city's post-Great War atmosphere, filled with revolution, treasure hunting, and clandestine activities. Sean shares his experiences and the inspiration behind his historical adventure novels (The Masked Man of Cairo) set during this vibrant period. We focus on the intertwining of historical events with personal narratives, the evolution of Egyptology, and the ongoing issue of artifact smuggling and preservation. Whether it's navigating the bustling streets of modern Cairo or reflecting on the golden age of archaeology, this episode is a fascinating journey into the past and its lasting impact on the present! The Masked Man of Cairo by Sean McLachan is available here. Here's what it's all about: An ancient mystery. A modern murder. Sir Augustus Wall, a horribly mutilated veteran of the Great War, has left Europe behind to open an antiquities shop in Cairo. But Europe’s troubles follow him as a priceless inscription is stolen and those who know its secrets start turning up dead. Teaming up with Egyptology expert Moustafa Ghani, and Faisal, an irritating street urchin he just can't shake, Sir Wall must unravel an ancient secret and face his own dark past. Takeaways: After WWI, Egyptians revolted against British rule, leading to violent crackdowns and, eventually, limited independence in 1922. Archaeologists like Howard Carter were racing to uncover lost treasures, often overshadowing the contributions of Egyptian and Sudanese laborers. The city was a mix of ancient traditions and modern chaos, with thriving markets, stolen artifacts, and struggling communities. Egyptians and Sudanese faced discrimination under colonial rule, while local scholars fought for recognition in a European-dominated field. Got a Story Idea? The Adventure Story Podcast: For lovers of Adventure, Archaeology, and Historical Mysteries.

Could Roman treasure be buried beneath Iceland’s volcanic crust? In this episode of The Adventure Fiction Podcast , I’m joined by author and explorer-at-heart Dave Bartel as we dive headfirst into one of history’s most intriguing “what ifs.” Did Roman explorers really reach the icy edge of the world—and leave behind a trail of forgotten riches? We blend archaeological fact with page-turning fiction, from scrolls unearthed in the ashes of Mt. Vesuvius to a hidden diamond cache that just might tie it all together. Whether you're a history buff, a storyteller, or just here for the wild ride, this episode peels back the layers of myth, mystery, and ancient ambition. This is the basis for Dave's novel, Roman Ice. When disgraced archaeologist Darwin Lacroix uncovers evidence of a lost Roman treasure buried beneath Iceland, his chance to redeem his family’s legacy ignites a deadly race against a ruthless cartel. With danger erupting from every direction—above and below—Darwin must outwit his rivals before the secret of Roman Ice is lost forever. Read Roman Ice here Takeaways: The discussion centers around the intriguing concept of whether Roman explorers may have ventured as far as Iceland, leaving treasures hidden beneath its volcanic soil. A significant topic of conversation is the ancient scroll discovered under Mount Vesuvius, which has real-world parallels in archaeological discoveries. The notion of diamonds in relation to Roman treasure is explored, revealing that while Romans were aware of diamonds, they did not particularly value them as treasures. Iceland's unique geological and historical context provides a compelling backdrop for the narrative of Roman treasure hunting in the novel. Dave and Luke share their experiences and inspirations, emphasizing the importance of intertwining factual history with imaginative storytelling for captivating narratives. There is a broader reflection on the significance of uncovering lost knowledge, particularly referencing the historical libraries of Timbuktu and their cultural importance. Got a Story Idea? Was the sinking of the Titanic truly an accident—or the result of something far more sinister? This episode plunges into the deep waters of history’s most famous maritime disaster, examining theories that challenge the official story. Could the doomed ship have actually been the Titanic’s sister vessel, the Olympic, swapped in an elaborate insurance fraud? Did powerful men on board meet their end to clear the way for the creation of the Federal Reserve? What about the eerie legend of a cursed Egyptian mummy supposedly on board? And what about the discovery of the Titanic wreck in 1985—an expedition that was actually a cover-up for a secret Cold War mission. Takeaways: The RMS Titanic, often deemed unsinkable, faced catastrophic failure on a moonless night. A small oversight, namely the lack of binoculars, contributed to the ship's tragic fate. The sinking of the Titanic has led to various conspiracy theories surrounding its legitimacy. Some theories suggest that the ship that sank was actually the Olympic, disguised as Titanic. The alleged connection of the Titanic disaster to the creation of the Federal Reserve reveals historical intrigue. The Titanic's discovery in 1985 was, according to some, a cover for a secret military operation. The Titanic Deception Some of the legends discussed here feature in my book, the Titanic Deception. What if the Titanic never struck an iceberg? April 15, 1912—the "unsinkable" ship goes down. But was it truly an accident? In the present, a senator survives an assassination attempt, thanks to a small-town doctor—who now knows too much. Enter Eden Black. What begins as a rescue mission spirals into a deadly conspiracy tied to a relic hidden in the Titanic’s wreck. From the British Museum to the ocean’s depths, Eden must uncover the truth before history’s greatest cover-up claims more lives. A pulse-pounding thriller in the Amazon #1 Bestselling Eden Black series. Read the Titanic Deception here Got a Story Idea? What if history got it wrong? Deep in the ruins of Cambodia’s Ta Prohm temple—where Tomb Raider was filmed—there’s a carving that defies explanation. It looks exactly like a stegosaurus … but it was carved centuries before modern paleontology even existed . Coincidence? Misinterpretation? Or could this be proof that dinosaurs and humans once coexisted? In this episode, we dive into one of archaeology’s most fascinating mysteries. From lost dinosaur survivors to ancient fossil discoveries, we explore shocking evidence from across the world —including prehistoric carvings in Peru, Mexico, and even England—that could turn everything you thought you knew about history on its head. Skeptics scoff, scientists shake their heads, but after what I saw… well, you might just question everything . Takeaways: The Ta Prohm temple in Cambodia features a carving resembling a stegosaurus, raising questions about the coexistence of dinosaurs and humans. Experts assert that the stegosaurus existed approximately 150 million years ago, creating a time paradox with the temple's 12th-century construction. Theories explaining the stegosaurus carving range from the survival of a small dinosaur population to the Khmer discovering and accurately depicting fossils. Other global artifacts, such as the Acambaro Figures and Ica Stones, suggest a historical connection between humans and dinosaurs, prompting further investigation into ancient knowledge. Quetzalcoatl. Kolkan. The Feathered Serpent. No matter what name you use, this legendary figure has been at the heart of Mesoamerican mythology for centuries. But was it just a myth—or something more? In this episode, we’re diving deep into the history, mystery, and symbolism of the Feathered Serpent. This isn’t just some ancient god that people used to worship—its story has been shaped, twisted, and used for political control over generations. The line between history and mythology? Yeah, it’s pretty blurry. And I’ve got the perfect guest to help me unpack it all— Steven Moore , an adventurer and author whose travels and research bring this legend to life. Together, we’ll explore how the Feathered Serpent has influenced everything from cultural identity to adventure storytelling today. So what do you think? Was Quetzalcoatl a misunderstood deity? A tool for rulers to maintain power? Or something even stranger? Let’s find out. Takeaways: The Feathered Serpent, known as Quetzalcoatl, embodies a rich tapestry of myth and legend across Mesoamerican cultures. Quetzalcoatl's symbolism transcends individual civilizations, acting as a powerful unifying figure among them. The notion of cultural assimilation suggests that earlier deities were adapted by conquering cultures for political control. The importance of firsthand experiences in writing is emphasized as it fosters authenticity and depth in storytelling. Got a Story Idea? The Mitchell-Hedges Crystal Skull is one of the most mysterious, controversial and down right weird artifacts of all time. The inspiration behind the Indiana Jones movie, it was discovered in 1924 by a young woman called Anna Mitchell-Hedges. She claims to have discovered this bizarre, almost impossibly well-crafted crystal skull in the ruins of an ancient Mayan city called Lubaantun. Carved from a single piece of quartz, with a detachable jawbone, the object seemed way too advanced for the time period. Naturally, stories of its supernatural powers followed. Anna swore the skull could glow, change temperature, and even predict major world events. Scientists, of course, weren’t buying it. But that didn’t stop her from spending her entire life defending its mystical reputation. Join me as we dive into the history, the myths, and the ongoing debate around the Mitchell-Hedges Crystal Skull. Let’s see if we can separate fact from fiction… or if the truth is even stranger than we thought. Takeaways: The discovery of the Mitchell-Hedges skull in 1924 led to extraordinary claims about its supernatural powers. Anna Mitchell-Hedges experienced strange phenomena associated with the skull throughout her life, including mysterious lights and temperature changes (apparently!) Despite skepticism from the scientific community, Anna's conviction about the skull's powers remained unwavering until her death in 2007. The origins and craftsmanship of the crystal skull remain a mystery, intriguing both enthusiasts and skeptics alike. Got a Story Idea?
