Nedal shares his incredible and unconventional journey, beginning with his family's immigration to North Edmonton as refugees in the early 60s. His early path led him to NAIT for Electrical Engineering Technology. Even during his first year, he was already putting in the groundwork, literally, by digging trenches for an electrical contractor. By 2003, he took the entrepreneurial leap, opening ASI Tech , a leading provider of comprehensive contracting and communication solutions A pivotal, life-changing moment arrived in 2008 when, while registering his son for soccer, he found no coaches available. Nedal stepped up, and it was through his coaching travels that he encountered a young Alphonso Davies . His son and Alphonso quickly bonded over their shared love for soccer. As Alphonso's talent began to shine, garnering recognition from academy scouts, Nedal became his trusted facilitator, helping him enroll in the academy and later sign with a team. Alphonso's exceptional progression quickly attracted interest from numerous agents. Yet, whenever approached, Alphonso would consistently redirect them back to Nedal, saying, "Talk to my coach." This unwavering trust led Alphonso's family to ask Nedal to become his official agent. The rest, as they say, fell into place: a year later, Nedal successfully negotiated Alphonso's monumental contract with FC Bayern Munich . Send us a text Join us for a coffee and an energetic chat with Matt Laird from The Brasstactics , the dynamic brass band whose vibrant sounds you've undoubtedly heard if you've attended an Edmonton Oilers Hockey game! Matt, an Edmonton native, started his musical journey early, playing the tuba and even serving as the spirited school mascot during his time at Harry Ainlay High School, bringing fun to all events. His passion for music truly took off playing the tuba in a drum corps, where he competed in various competitions across the US and was part of a team that achieved an impressive 5th place globally! He continued to tour the world with various bands and drum corps until life called for a shift, and music was temporarily put on the back burner as he started a family. However, a transformative trip to New Orleans rekindled his love for playing. Picking up the sousaphone, a variation of the tuba, inspired him to assemble a New Orleans-style brass band right here in Edmonton. Teaming up with his friend, Blair Wilkie, they began gathering talented friends and friends of friends, and before they knew it, a full, vibrant brass band had come together. The Brasstactics began building awareness through ingenious "Brass Blitzes" – energetic 15-minute pop-up shows at various events. This strategy quickly gained them recognition, leading to more and more bookings at bars and venues across the city. Their growing popularity caught the attention of the Edmonton Oilers, who reached out looking for a brass band to enliven their games. Now, members of The Brasstactics are a beloved staple at every Oilers home game, having built a passionate "cult following" among fans. A decade ago, Don and his family made the move back to his hometown of Edmonton, where he became a Managing Partner & Broker and part-owner of RE/MAX Excellence. Beyond his impressive career, Don has been a long-time and passionate supporter of the YMCA. After his children left home, he embarked on an extraordinary mission: a cross-Canada bike ride from Victoria, BC to Thunder Bay, Ontario. When jokingly dubbed "Halfway Don" by the Y staff, it sparked an even grander idea: to ride the entire length of Canada in just four weeks! He meticulously trained through winter, using his vacation time to complete this epic journey. Working directly with YMCA Canada, Don set up donation pages for YMCAs nationwide, riding by day and blogging by night. Along the way, he stopped at local YMCAs, met with community support, and even gave interviews on the roadside. His incredible efforts ultimately raised $30,000 for the YMCA's across the country. Beyond their careers, Rob and Debby have been deeply involved in their community. They actively participated in their community league, with Rob serving as President and Debby as Treasurer. Upon moving to Parkland County, Rob's commitment grew, leading to his service as a Councillor from 2001 to 2007 and as Mayor from 2007 to 2010. Together, they raised four children who have each carved their own unique paths in life, from senior NHL refereeing to healthcare and business ownership. Marty's career has been a tapestry of diverse experiences, from jewelry stores to working with fire departments, showcasing his unwavering commitment to success. Marilyn, a retired registered nurse, brought her expertise to the table, blending healthcare with business acumen in their joint ventures. Their gas detection company was a culmination of their shared entrepreneurial spirit, a business they had grown tremendously over three years before selling to a company in Montreal. Marilyn and Marty had stayed on to help the new owners for a few months before retiring, when Marty had his unforeseen accident leaving him a quadriplegic. Despite the challenges they faced, Marilyn and Marty remain a resilient team, supporting each other through thick and thin. Their dedication to their work and family shines through, reflecting in the accomplishments of their children and the joy of being grandparents to nine cherished grandchildren. Eight years ago, she embarked on her role as a Corporate Planner for Parkland County, swiftly climbing the ladder to become one of the youngest CAOs in her field. Laura and her husband are avid runners, they are involved with Ultra-Marathons hosting one in Edmonton every year and hosting a running group as well. She is an avid golfer, she has a wonderful daughter Georgia. Tyler's journey from a small town Yamaha enthusiast to a seasoned Branch Manager at Fabco Plastics has been a testament to his resilience and determination. Tyler grew up in the small town of Willingdon Alberta, a small farming community comprised of 350 residents. It wasn't until his family moved to St. Albert that he decided he wanted work at the local Yamaha Dealership. Tyler's love of motorcycles and sport came together and he was able to participate in motorcycle races, even travelling to the US to compete. Tyler worked at Yamaha for 21 years, it wasn't until the racing started to take a physical toll on him that he decided a change was in order. He began taking night courses to upgrade his schooling with the intent to pursue a Mechanical Engineering Degree from NAIT. Through this schooling he realized the degree wasn't what he wanted to do with his life and was approached with the opportunity to work at Fabco Plastics as the Branch Manager. Tyler has been working with Fabco ever since. Last year as Tyler and his wife, Dawn, were heading home from Westlock when they were in a head-on collision. A car had drifted into their lane and there was no time to react. Tyler woke up in the ambulance with no memory of the accident, at the hospital it was 6 hours before he was able to see Dawn. While Tyler walked away from the accident with minor injuries, Dawn's were more severe. Throughout their recovery Tyler and Dawn were supported by family and friends, whose positivity helped make an unfortunate situation a bit brighter. Tyler's story serves as a reminder that setbacks can lead to new opportunities and that with perseverance, even the most difficult challenges can be overcome. Karen's journey from dental assistant to community advocate is one filled with passion and dedication. Born and raised in Winnipeg, she found her calling in the dental field while also working as a DJ for fun on the weekends. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Gene, and later relocated to Toronto. As fate would have it, Gene's broadcasting job led them to Edmonton, where Karen seized the opportunity to continue her career as a dental hygienist. As her children were growing up, Karen was very active in their community; volunteering with her children's schools, sports teams and local Food Banks. Once her children had reached the teenage years, the volunteering with school and sports teams came to a stop. Karen missed the sense of connection to her local community. This led Karen to City Council, where she was elected as a Councillor in 2021. With her genuine desire to reignite a sense of community, Karen has been able to channel her passion for volunteering into tangible initiatives. Mike and Lea are two phenomenal human beings who have persevered through losing a child to cancer. Like many parents, they never thought this would happen to their family until, one day, it did. Their son Ben was diagnosed with Glioblastoma (brain cancer) at the age of five; their world became The Stollery Children's Hospital, and Ben underwent treatments, all while continuing to try to live their everyday lives with their other children, Dylan and Emmy. Their story became known worldwide after the community rallied to create a car parade for Ben's birthday. The word got out, and it quickly snowballed from a few cars to a significant car parade with over a hundred vehicles and news stations. Through this harrowing journey, Ben was supported by his family and the community, including the Edmonton Oilers and Connor McDavid. Ben passed away in August of 2022, and as the family struggled with their new world without him, their fight was not over. Mike was diagnosed with sarcoma in 2023 and had to travel to the States to receive proton therapy treatment, something he could not get in Canada. From something so devastating, Mike and Lea started The Ben Stelter Foundation to continue the legacy of Ben’s big heart and generosity. Their goal is to help children fight Glioblastoma and other cancers. They help provide magical experiences, medical equipment, and advanced research, and they are working to bring Proton Therapy to Canada. Reina, originally from Holland in the Netherlands, began her career as an elementary school teacher. However, her life took a surprising turn when she met her husband, Adrian, who was deeply involved in the world of cranes. Adrian's family business in the Netherlands revolved around cranes, and his passion for these machines was contagious. In the year 2000, Reina and Adrian decided to explore Canada and instantly fell in love with the country. Determined to make it their permanent home, they embarked on the journey of becoming Canadian citizens. In 2003, Adrian received a job opportunity to work for a Canadian company that was importing a crane from the Netherlands. They needed someone with specialized knowledge of the crane, and Adrian fit the bill perfectly. The crane in question was a Spierings crane, a unique combination of an all-terrain crane and a tower crane. These specialized cranes have the ability to maneuver and transport heavy loads in ways that differ from traditional cranes. In 2005, Reina and Adrian moved to Fort McMurray and later decided to start their own company, VanGenderen Canada. They saw great potential in the market and believed that their experience and knowledge of cranes would be valuable. As their business grew, they made the decision to relocate to Acheson, a move that allowed them to expand their operations and reach a wider clientele. Today, VanGenderen Canada is a true family business, with Reina and Adrian at the helm. Their children also play a significant role in the company, helping out wherever they can. Currently, VanGenderen Canada proudly owns the only two Spierings cranes in North America, with a third one on its way. Reina and Adrian's journey from Holland to Canada has been one of passion, determination, and success. Their love for cranes has not only brought them closer as a family but has also allowed them to carve out a niche in the Canadian market. The story of Gather Bakery began during the challenging times of the Covid pandemic. Ashley noticed a lack of gingerbread houses available in stores, prompting Teresa to showcase her homemade gingerbread kits on Facebook. The response was overwhelming, and orders started pouring in. Working tirelessly until Christmas, Teresa and Ashley baked their hearts out to ensure that everyone could enjoy the magic of gingerbread houses. Encouraged by the success of their venture, they decided to expand their offerings beyond Christmas. They introduced gingerbread kits for other holidays, including Valentine's Day and Halloween. In 2023, realizing that their home kitchen could no longer keep up with the growing demand, Teresa and Ashley made the bold decision to open a physical bakery in Spruce Grove. Since its opening, Gather Bakery has become an integral part of the community, serving as a gathering place where people can connect and savor delicious baked goods. Send us a text Join us for a coffee and chat with Broddy Olson from the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. Broddy is the longest serving member of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra! Born in Edmonton Alberta, Broddy had music in his blood, his father had opened the Olson Music School. At 17 he auditioned for the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and he hasn't looked back since. Broddy met the love of his life, Patty, in University, they soon got married in 1967. Patty suffered a tragic accident in 1983 that left her as a quadriplegic. Broddy stayed by her side through it all and helped get medical advancements into Canada for her. They spent 47 wonderful years together before her passing in 2014. Her family settled into Edmonton where she would meet the love of her life and her future husband. Being in an inter-racial marriage was not easy, but they persevered and built a beautiful life together. Join us for a coffee and chat with Tyler Pelke. In November of 1990, at the age of 14, Tyler and his friend Curtis were the victims of a horrendous crime in a small Manitoba town. Miraculously, Tyler survived and was the key witness in the trial, which led to the conviction and life sentence of their attacker. For years, he dealt with survivors’ guilt and unforgiveness but refused to believe that an event or circumstance could define him. Over the years, he learned to press on, make the most of every day, and commit to helping others, believing there was a reason he was still here. This is his story behind the story.
