In the 1980s, there were only 63 Black films by, for, or about Black Americans. But in the 1990s, that number quadrupled, with 220 Black films making their way to cinema screens nationwide. What sparked this “Black New Wave?” Who blazed this path for contemporaries like Ava DuVernay, Kasi Lemmons and Jordan Peele? And how did these films transform American culture as a whole? ×Shark Month begins with historical Norweigan adventure film, Kon-Tiki (2012). The film ponders what happens when you put six men on a raft and send them across the ocean on a 101 day journey. Plus: jelly fish, whales, storms and, of course, sharks! With toxic masculinity, cult vibes, and a whiff of racism to boot. Wanna connect with the show? Debuting in 2021, Dr. Death chronicles the botched surgeries performed in Texas by surgeon Christopher Duntsch, as well as the efforts by colleagues Dr. Henderson and Dr. Kirby to stop him. Eli Roth’s 2007 sequel may be known as a feminist version of his notorious and groundbreaking film Hostel , but its most memorable scene is pulled from a centuries old true crime story. The cinematic Mrs. Bathory (Monika Malácová) may occupy a single scene, but does the real life inspiration for this bloodthirsty character inform other aspects of Roth’s disturbing story? Joe and Jenn discuss the historical connections, socio-political messages, and surprising restraint of what is arguably Roth’s most successful film. Wanna connect with the show? Our first Elizabeth Báthory text is the Hammer horror text from 1971 starring Ingrid Pitt as the vain Countess who kills virgins to stay young. Countess Elizabeth Báthory is widely regarded as one of the world’s most prolific serial killers. She’s said to have murdered more than 650 young women while bathing in the blood of her unfortunate victims. But are these legends based in reality or legends created to vilify a powerful woman? Was the real Elizabeth a bloodthirsty killer, innocent victim or somewhere in between? Andrew Douglas’s The Amityville Horror is one of the most profitable entries in the early aughts series of classic horror remakes. This stylish haunted house story amps up the gore and updates the story for a modern audience, but is it adapted from Jay Anson’s 1977 novel or is this 2005 version a reimagining of Stuart Rosenberg’s original film? In 2016, Ben Young's disturbing Hounds of Love took the Venice International Film Festival by storm. This disturbing story of torture and extreme codependency won over critics while star Ashleigh Cummings secured the Fedeora Award for Best Actress. But while commending the film’s harrowing appeal, audiences noticed a striking similarity to the real crimes of David and Katherine Birnie. Young has distanced himself from the true crime label, but does this film feel like an adaptation of a single story or pulled from a variety of horrific crimes? Wanna connect with the show? In 2010, a Ukrainian orphan named Natalia Grace was adopted by Kristine and Michael Barnett. While projecting the image of a perfect family, they quickly noticed a pattern of strange behavior and began to believe that Natalia Grace was not a six year old orphan in need, but an adult con artist trying to cause their death. Jenn walks Joe through the messy details of this disturbing case and the horrific truth behind the Barnetts’ salacious story. In the mid to late 90s, serial killer John Bunting groomed teenager Jamie Vlassakis to commit multiple murders under the guise of protecting their Adelaide suburb from pedophiles and queer men. Director Justin Kurzel and screenwriter Shaun Grant adapt the horrifying true story of the "bodies in the barrels" in the 2011 film Snowtown , which is an incredibly difficult, but important, watch. C/W: animal abuse, sexual assault, and torture Correction: Joe incorrectly states Adelaide is the capitol of Australia (it's actually Canberra) Wanna connect with the show? Climb that tree because we're headed into croc infested waters with Andrew Traucki and David Nerlich's 2007 creature feature, Black Water . It's a low budget affair, but shot in such a savvy way that Jenn nearly loses it. Plus: changes to Brett Mann's real life story, comparisons to Greg McLean's Rogue , crocs vs alligators (play the Jenn drinking game!), and the smartest $5K Joe has seen on screen. In 2005, Greg McLean’s bleak horror film Wolf Creek made waves with its unflinching cruelty and disturbing violence. Adding to the terror is the film’s opening claims that this horrific story was based on actual events. But how closely does McLean keep to this upsetting source material? Jenn walks Joe through the harrowing true stories of Bradley Murdoch and Ivan Milat, two notorious killers who preyed on backpackers exploring Australia’s vast wilderness. Topics include: Parallels to iconic horror, depictions of Australian archetypes, and the disturbing origins of making “a head on a stick.” References: > Eric Shorey. Alfred Packer was no wilderness guide, or at least he wasn’t a talented one. This quirky prospector was known to be a petty thief and compulsive liar who shifted around from job to job. But in 1874, he convinced 5 men to follow him into the woods for what was supposed to be a seven-day trip. Months later, Packer emerged from the woods alone and strangely fit considering the lack of food. In this episode, Jenn walks Joe through this strange story about the man now known as the Colorado Cannibal. You may know the story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, but you’ve never seen it told so intimately and with so much harrowing heart as in J.A. Bayona’s Society of the Snow . Adapted from the book by Pablo Vierci, the film achieves terrifying accuracy with painstaking recreations, on-location filming, and a young cast of South American newcomers. Jenn and Joe continue a month on Survival Cannibalism with this beautiful retelling. Bayona chronicles not just the 72 days members of the Old Christians Club Rugby Team spent stranded in the Andes, but brings us into their lives before and after the disaster.
