Rowan Zeoli and Caeylin Ellis of the independent tabletop gaming news site Rascal join Jordan to chat about the founding of the site, taking games journalism seriously, and the future of gaming. Rascal News was founded a year ago by 3 tabletop journalists who had worked for Polygon, Dicebreaker, Gizmodo, and I09. As those organisations have been shuttering their tabletop news coverage and firing professional journalists Rascal has sought to create an online space that is tackling major news stories across the tabletop industry. From the major business moves of massive companies like Hasbro Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop to the smaller scale stories like union workers striking at Vallejo paints, and plenty of stuff in between, Rascal is looking to become a bastion of independent, honest journalism. Paul Cockburn joined Games Workshop from TSR UK having worked on Imagine Magazine and supplements for Dungeons & Dragons. There have been many Games Workshop games that just didn’t make it past the development stage - from Necromunda on a corrupted Eldar Craft World, to a Dr Who time travelling board game, to the fall of the Empire and the corruption of the Warhammer world by Tamurkhan. Rick Priestley, creator of Warhammer and 40k and the design team lead at Games Workshop for many years, joins Jordan Sorcery to explore the history that didn’t happen - some of the many Games Workshop projects that were started but only ever released in rumours, tidbits, hushed whispers, or in some cases not at all. From more collaborations with MB Games after the success of HeroQuest, to new takes on historical wargaming with Perry miniatures, the early iteration of Battlefleet Gothic to a new Mad Max-style IP on the floor of dried out oceans! _____________________________ [ ELEMENT GAMES AFFILIATE LINK ] https://elementgames.co.uk/?d=11216 [ PATREON ] https://www.patreon.com/jordansorcery [ KO-FI ] https://ko-fi.com/jordansorcery [ YOUTUBE CHANNELS ] History & Editorial: https://youtube.com/ @jordansorcery Longform Conversation: https://youtube.com/ @JordanSorceryPods [ WEBSITE ] https://jordansorcery.com/ #Warhammer #40k #Warhammer40000 #Necromunda #GamesWorkshop #tabletop #boardgames #RPG #wargames _____________________________ References, Sources, and Links: [Wombat Wargames] https://wombatwargames.com/ [Rick Priestley's Space Battles: A Spacefarers Guide Blog] https://spacebattlesaspacefarersguide.blogspot.com/ _____________________________ Art, Music, and Copyright: Images used belong to their respective copyright owners Jordan Sorcery Theme by Joylin Music Jordan Sorcery Heraldry by Becka Moor Support the show…

John Peake co-founded Games Workshop in 1975 with his school- and flat-mates Steve Jackson and Sir Ian Livingstone. Together they would sell John’s handmade wooden games, publish Owl & Weasel fanzine, and battle to keep the company afloat in its first year. Everything culminated in the first ever Games Day, followed shortly thereafter by John’s decision to leave the company as it pivoted towards Dungeons & Dragons and the emerging roleplaying boom. This is John’s own account of the events that led to the founding of Games Workshop - a voice that has long been missing from the official record of events. NOTE: At the 07:15 mark John mistakenly refers to the date as August '74, this should in fact be August '72. _____________________________ [ ELEMENT GAMES AFFILIATE LINK ] https://elementgames.co.uk/?d=11216 [ PATREON ] https://www.patreon.com/jordansorcery [ KO-FI ] https://ko-fi.com/jordansorcery [ YOUTUBE CHANNELS ] History & Editorial: https://youtube.com/ @jordansorcery Longform Conversation: https://youtube.com/ @JordanSorceryPods [ WEBSITE ] https://jordansorcery.com/ #GamesWorkshop #tabletop #boardgames #RPG #wargames _____________________________ Art, Music, and Copyright: Images used belong to their respective copyright owners Jordan Sorcery Theme by Joylin Music Jordan Sorcery Heraldry by Becka Moor Jordan Sorcery Heraldry and Theme copyright @jordansorcery Support the show…

Author and former Games Workshop board member Peter Darvill-Evans in conversation with Jordan Sorcery. Games Workshop and White Dwarf have a long history dating back to days before Warhammer Fantasy even existed. Under the tenure of co-founders Steve Jackson and Sir Ian Livingstone GW was the European importer of the new roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons, the UK publisher of multiple RPGs from companies like Chaosium, and the retailer for all manner of tabletop games and distractions. By the mid-80s the founders would leave to concentrate on gamebook adventures for Fighting Fantasy, whilst a boardroom battle determined the order of succession and the shift for Games Workshop from selling everyone’s games, to focusing on their own creations manufactured in Nottingham. My guest today joined Games Workshop in those early days, working in the first retail store before managing the entire retail operation. He contributed to White Dwarf, played in Ian & Steve’s band, wrote some Fighting Fantasy adventures of his own, created the Dr Who RPG and published many Dr Who books, and he was even a member of the board during that stressful succession. Advanced Fighting Fantasy Publisher Graham Bottley in conversation with Jordan Sorcery. Fighting Fantasy gamebooks have had an incredible legacy - ever since that we found that Warlock at Firetop Mountain we’ve gone back into the dungeons, forests, cities, islands, and everything else that Fighting Fantasy has had to offer. In the 80s there was an initial attempt to create a roleplaying game based on the world, adventures, and enemies from the gamebooks, but it wasn’t until Arion Games released a second edition of the RPG in 2011 that the system really took off. My guest today is responsible for resurrecting the Advanced Fighting Fantasy RPG, commissioning, writing, and publishing the entire game line, and most recently creating a brand new Advanced Fighting Fantasy boardgame - Dark Dungeons. We talk about honouring the legacy of what has come before, the methods and approaches to building a new game in an old world, and the business of RPG publishing in the modern marketplace. Ryan Miller helped to establish Games Workshop’s brief tenure as a CCG and TCG card game company by founding Sabretooth Games in the early 2000s. Responsible for the Warhammer card game WarCry, and a 40k card game called Horus Heresy, Miller explored parts of the settings and lore that were relatively untouched, and tapped into a completely different gaming space for GW. And all of that was before he helped to design Disney Lorcana. _____________________________ [ ELEMENT GAMES AFFILIATE LINK ] https://elementgames.co.uk/?d=11216 [ PATREON ] https://www.patreon.com/jordansorcery [ KO-FI ] https://ko-fi.com/jordansorcery [ YOUTUBE CHANNELS ] History & Editorial: https://youtube.com/ @jordansorcery Longform Conversation: https://youtube.com/ @JordanSorceryPods [ WEBSITE ] https://jordansorcery.com/ #Warhammer #40k #Warhammer40000 #GamesWorkshop #tabletop #boardgames #CCG #TCG #CardGame #DisneyLorcana #wargames _____________________________ Art, Music, and Copyright: Images used belong to their respective copyright owners Jordan Sorcery Theme by Joylin Music Jordan Sorcery Heraldry by Becka Moor Jordan Sorcery Heraldry and Theme copyright @jordansorcery Support the show…

Johnny Fraser-Allen joins me to talk about his new Dungeons and Dragons campaign setting The Gloaming, creating some of the most movie accurate Star Wars gaming tables, and the work of building an entire fantasy world from literally the ground up! A world renowned concept artist and sculptor Johnny Fraser-Allen has worked extensively in Hollywood with the WETA workshop, designing and creating monsters, giants, goblins, and creatures for movies as diverse as the BFG, the Hobbit, and the Impossible Door. As a huge gamer Johnny has also turned those talents to the gaming table, building phenomenally detailed battle boards representing every world from the Star Wars saga, including Hoth and Dagobah. He has also created a complete fantasy world, The Gloaming, inspired by New Zeland folklore and faerie tales. After founding his own company Jackson went on to develop classics like Car Wars, Illuminati, and GURPS - the Generic Universal Roleplaying System that could be used to simulate RPG games in any setting or style. With games like Munchkin SJ Games has remained a relevant force in the gaming market place to this day. Steve Jackson even cross the Atlantic to work with Steve Jackson (and Ian Livingstone) to pen a few Fighting Fantasy game books. Kim Newman in conversation with Jordan Sorcery Kim Newman has had a long and successful career as an author famous for his Anno Dracula series, as a television personality, and as Empire's horror expert since the magazine's very first issue. But there is another aspect to the remarkable history of this remarkable writer - his time writing the very first Warhammer Fantasy novel, Drachenfels. Under the banner of Games Workshop's first publishing imprint, GW Books, and the pseudonym Jack Yeovil, Kim Newman wrote a series of short stories and novels set in the fledgling Warhammer Fantasy world, as well as an intricately plotted dystopian tale set in the short-lived Mad Max fuelled world of Dark Future. Kim talks to me about the beginnings of GW Books, his work for Games Workshop both published and unpublished, and returning to the characters years later to pen a new tale for the Black Library. As an exceptional thinker on the nature of gaming Tomas has given TED talks, consulted across the video games industry, written tabletop games, and co-founded his own games studio, Auroch Digital, to push the boundaries of what games can mean. In more recent times Tomas and Auroch have adapted classic Games Workshop titles like Chainsaw Warrior and Dark Future for the video game market. And in their latest release they have taken the Warhammer 40,000 universe and refracted it through the lens of retro first person shooters with Boltgun. Rick Priestley in conversation with Jordan Sorcery. The creator of 40k and Warhammer Fantasy, Rick Priestley in conversation! Rick Priestley and his school friend Richard 'Hal' Halliwell created Warhammer Fantasy for Bryan Ansell at Citadel in 1983. After that Rick worked on 5 more editions of Fantasy, as well as Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, countless other games, and of course, also invented Warhammer 40,000. With a lifetime of experience creating some of the greatest tabletop games in history it was my privilege to talk with Rick Priestley about how everything began, what it was like to work at Citadel and Games Workshop in the early days, and how things evolved. Johnny Fraser-Allen in conversation with Jordan Sorcery. After working as a conceptual and special effects artist at Weta Workshop on films like Steven Spielberg's BFG, Guillermo Del Toro and then Peter Jackson's the Hobbit movies, and James Cameron's Avatar Johnny Fraser-Allen began making miniatures for gaming in the fantasy realms he loves so much. Working with Alessio Cavatore & Riverhorse Games Johnny designed the miniatures for the boardgame adaptations of Jim Henson's Labyrinth and Dark Crystal. As a lifelong Warhammer fan his work has been featured on Warhammer Community, and his incredible creations have regularly appeared on Adam Savage's Tested. And all of that is before the creation of his 20-year-in-the-making magical world of The Gloaming. A folktale and fae inspired fantasy world drawing on European and Antipodean myths & legends, filled with incredible creatures, and perhaps one of the most immersive game settings ever devised. A full-size tour of The Gloaming has been produced by Weta with narration by Stephen Fry, and Johnny has been working on a series of campaigns to release 28mm scale miniatures and printable STLs for the denizens of this otherworldly place. Alan Merrett in conversation with Jordan Sorcery. Alan has held many roles in his 36 year career at Games Workshop; starting as a caster at Citadel in the early days of the company and ending as the Head of Intellectual Property for the international hobby mega-corp that GW had become by 2016. Over that period Alan was involved in some of the most significant business decisions in the company's history, helping to influence the creation and evolution of the Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 universes, even pitching the concept for what would become Age of Sigmar. In our conversation we talk about the beginning of 40k and the development of Warhammer Fantasy into a more accessible product. The way in which the culture of GW changed over time, and the countless inflection points in the creation, expansion, and destruction of some of the greatest gaming worlds ever devised. Working under Bryan Ansell, Tom Kirby, and Kevin Rountree Jim was responsible for developing the GW management trainee programme and academy, leading the design studio for a number of years, and ultimately taking on the role of head of e-commerce for the company. Amongst the many and varied experiences during his career Jim helped build the Games Workshop and Forge World web stores and we talk about the approach taken as well as what may have influenced the most recent update to Warhammer.com. We also touch on a wide range of stories, from the development of Mordheim to the cultural shifts in the business over the years. Sir Ian Livingstone in conversation with Jordan Sorcery. Along with a couple of friends Sir Ian Livingstone founded Games Workshop in 1975 to sell wooden toys and games. Within a few years they had become the exclusive European distributor of TSR’s Dungeons & Dragons, had been offered a merger by Gary Gygax, launched White Dwarf magazine, and started producing their own board games. In our conversation we cover those early years, the creation of Citadel Miniatures and partnership with Bryan Ansell ahead of the arrival of Warhammer. And we go on to explore the origin of Fighting Fantasy and Sir Ian’s transition into the world of video games. Mark Wells in conversation with Jordan Sorcery. We explore a period of incredible change in the organisation as it shifts from the 90s approach of 2 core games (Warhammer Fantasy & Warhammer 40,000) with specialist games like Gorka Morka, Necromunda, and Mordheim alongside them, to the 2000s focus on 3 core systems - Warhammer Fantasy Battle, 40K, and the Lord of the Rings. During Mark's tenure at the company there were many exciting, challenging, and at times controversial decisions, changes, and products. This was the era that saw the rise of the internet, the legal wrangles with Chapter House, the end and then return of the boxed game (and one of the best GW ever made in Space Hulk 3rd edition), the introduction of one-man retail stores, and a host of other inflection points in the story of Games Workshop. Andy Chambers in conversation with Jordan Sorcery. Andy Chambers was lead designer, AKA the Overfiend, for 40K 3rd Edition and was arguably the person most responsible for evolving it into the foundations of the modern game. Starting with White Dwarf articles for Space Marine & Adeptus Titanicus, writing Battle Magic and Warhammer Armies: Skaven for Fantasy Battle, and then leading the development of 40K and working on at least 12 Codex books! And that's not to mention Necromunda, Battlefleet Gothic, and Gorka Morka. Plus more recently the 2000AD and Judge Dredd games for Warlord Games. Andy and I talk about his career at Games Workshop, the art of developing 40K and other GW classics, and his more recent work on new games like Judge Dredd.
