Why do so many of us get nervous when public speaking? Communication expert Lawrence Bernstein says the key to dealing with the pressure is as simple as having a casual chat. He introduces the "coffee shop test" as a way to help you overcome nerves, connect with your audience and deliver a message that truly resonates. After the talk, Modupe explains a similar approach in academia called the "Grandma test," and how public speaking can be as simple as a conversation with grandma. Tales Vinyl Tells is my podcast that evolved into my radio show that airs weekly on RadioFreeNashville. I had quite a few LPs that I collected in the late 60s and 70s and I always knew the magic of the albums of that era of album-oriented rock brought back memories of times, people, smells, tastes and feelings. I hope it does for you too. Back-stories and album liner notes tie the tunes together. I’m your host Brian Hallgren and you should hear the Tales Vinyl Tells!

Episode 192! New and improved! Lots of LPs to hear. So little time. Hello and welcome to another Tales Vinyl Tells. Our trek into the great album rock of the 1960s and 70s is what we focus on here. The albums that came out during that time carried at least one maybe two really great numbers and my mission is to dig some of those hidden gems out and share them with you. I’m Brian Hallgren and these are the Tales Vinyl Tells. Looking over our playlist today we’ve got some J.J. Cale, one from the Airplane’s Surrealistic Pillow, the Kinks, Joe Walsh, the Dukes of September and if we have the time we’re gonna slip one in from Stevie Wonder. If you’re listening on the radio or online but not in podcast form you might want to check the Podcasts out because they contain usually more music and messages that you want to hear. Or not. Regardless, these are the stories that songwriters and artist wanted to tell you. These are the Tales Vinyl Tells. I want to say thank you to all the financial supporters of Tales Vinyl Tells. Episode 189: One Of The Main Musical Topics Of The 60s: Protest! May 6, 2025 One nonviolent way to show one’s displeasure/disgust/disagreement is to protest. In a letter to the editor, written in a blog, by contacting your lawmakers, taking it to the streets and there are many other ways. Pete Seeger was known for his songs protesting mistreatment of workers and war itself, and over time there has been a great abundance of songs and actions of protest. Marvin Gaye, CCR, Nina Simone, Dylan, Lennon and many others wrote and performed their protest songs from What’s Goin’ on?, Blowin’ in the Wind to Fortunate Son, Give Peace a chance and Strange Fruit. In the future you’ll hear an episode of Tales Vinyl Tells dedicated to protest songs. Please send your ideas to me at TalesVinylTells@gmail.com and yours may well be included. And when you email me, please be sure to let me know who and where you are. I mention protest songs because we kick off with a real kicker from Quicksilver Messenger Service and include Petty, Joni, Cheech, Chong, Nick and more. Thanks for listening. I want to say thank you to all the financial supporters of Tales Vinyl Tells. Episode 184: Some Of The Goodies From 1969 May 1, 2025 Hello and welcome! It’s another Tales Vinyl Tells, an excursion into the great album cuts of our vinyl records of the 60s & 70s. Today we’re tuned into some of the 1969 releases that rocked and changed the consciousness of the world. Tommy, the Who’s Rock Opera came out in 69. So did the Stones’ Let It Bleed, Santana’s first, The Stooges debuted with Iggy Pop and the first two Zeppelin LPs came out in that year. So did Abbey Road. And “The Band” LP, with Cripple Creek and The night they drove old dixie down. Yeh! It was a great musical year, 1969. I’m Brian Hallgren. I’ve been doing this podcast since December 2019 and the radio program since January of 2022. And here’s today’s episode, #184, exposing some of the Tales Vinyl Tells. Welcome to the camp. It's another Tales Vinyl Tells! You've heard a lot of these before and they are so much fun to hear again! This is Episode 188: Come Along With Me And Let's Dig Some LPs! April 22, 2025 We loved sitting around after work in the late 60s and early 70s and checking out the new LPs that were flooding the market and heard on great radio stations like Mother-WMUM, KSAN, WSHE. The album cuts ranged from King Crimson and Captain Beefheart, a new Beatles, and we’d track from front to back. So many great cuts that just didn’t find room on the air. Here on Tales Vinyl Tells, I remind you how great the album cuts were and still are. Moody Blues were bringing the eerie sound of a mellotron, Hendrix’ candle was burning brightly, and Seals and Crofts were turning people on to the love in their music and their faith in Bahá’í. Man, we’ve got all that here with each episode. Donald Fagen and his music is here too, today. Hope you enjoy! I want to say thank you to all the financial supporters of Tales Vinyl Tells. Episode 187: A Few Years Ago, Bob Dylan Sold An Estimated $300 Million Worth Of His Work April 15, 2025 He signed with Columbia in 1961 and the deal included around 600 pieces. More details in this episode, which includes Dylan himself and lots of great copies of his songs. The Byrds really favored Dylan’s works and recorded around 18 of his songs. The Turtles did one. It’s here on the original episode, #30. It’s here too and so is the re-recorded and current program broadcast on air and in the apps. Hope you really enjoy the master’s music. 1 TALES VINYL TELLS PODCAST Episode 186: It Was A New Year, 2023! Salute To Christine McVie And More 57:59
TALES VINYL TELLS PODCAST Episode 186: It Was A New Year, 2023! Salute To Christine McVie And More April 8, 2025 Looks like we made it to a new year. I was beginning to wonder. Last year had some good, some sad but the best thing is that is ended. I had a Covid Christmas, lost a couple really good people, like my 30 year old niece, my 62 year old friend, had a melanoma on my head and it was just a weird year. I did though get my chance to bring Tales Vinyl Tells to RadioFreeNashville and the world. Now a chance to regain momentum. Here we have a salute to Christine McVie and her time in public performance. She had a distinctive voice, you could probably tell the songs she penned and she brought life to the rock world. She is missed. One tune she did in her time with Chicken Shack in 1968 is here and I think you’ll recognize it. All in all, here’s some great music to kick the year off with. I want to say thank you to all the financial supporters of Tales Vinyl Tells. Whether a small amount monthly or a very generous donation, each of you listeners are very appreciated and if you can and do give monthly, my deepest gratitude goes to you. Episode 185: Jerry Lee W/E Street Band, Leeds Music, Blue Jays, Fogelberg March 31, 2025 Going back to the first airing of episode 30 on RadioFreeNashville.org and November 2022, we’ll play Jerry Lee Lewis and Springsteen’s Band at the opening of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, which, looking at recent inductees, should be remarqueed Hall of Music (Pop). Live at Leeds was regarded by some as one of the, if not THE best recorded live albums, along with The Allmans at Fillmore East. There’s some shakin’ going on there too. The entire hour is filled with a lot of the great LP cuts that made the 60s & 70s music so important. I want to say thank you to all the financial supporters of Tales Vinyl Tells. Whether a small amount monthly or a very generous donation, each of you listeners are very appreciated and if you can and do give monthly, my deepest gratitude goes to you. Episode 183: Remembering Marianne Faithfull, Jesse Colin Young And Roy Ayers, Jr. + More March 25, 2025 Welcome back to this hour that we call Tales Vinyl Tells. It’s your chance to hear some of the great album rock from the 60s and 70s mostly. We’ve been doing these programs since late 2019 and have covered lots a ground. You know and I know that we’ve just scratched the surface of recorded rock, so the new shows keep coming. The reruns aren’t bad either. They can be heard on your favorite podcast app. Just search for Tales Vinyl Tells. Today we’re going to say thanks and farewell to Marianne Faithfull, Jesse Colin Young of the Youngbloods and vibraphonist Roy Ayers Jr. The music under me is Roy Ayres with Herbie Mann at the 1969 Harlem summer of soul extravaganza with a song cowritten by Isaac Hayes. Those three have entered the room next door, as Henry Diltz coined the phrase. You also get some of the blues with Boz Scaggs and Duane Allman, together. So these are the stories that songwriters and artists want to convey to you. These are the Tales Vinyl Tells. I want to say thank you to all the financial supporters of Tales Vinyl Tells. Whether a small amount monthly or a very generous donation, each of you listeners are very appreciated and if you can and do give monthly, my deepest gratitude goes to you. Episode 180! Here In Gator Landing, Fla There's No Time To Lose! March 4, 2025 Today’s hour is a visit to the radio program of November 2022 on RadioFreeNashville.org and is a salute to the spirit of Nicolette Larson and her work as a successful solo artist and her work with The Doobies, Neil Young and many of the artists that Ted Templeman produced. I’m here for a short while longer near the Atlantic, and when I look way out on the horizon of that great ocean, first there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is. Episode 179: Judy, Bobby, Petty, Koopy, Bluesy, Rocky And More, For Fun February 25, 2025 This is Tales Vinyl Tells. And it’s another hour of some of the best rock tunes from albums of the 60s and 70s with some delicacies tossed in, just because. I’m saying hello from south florida, in Sandy Beach actually. Today, we’re going to salute a few great artists who were in their late 20s in the late 60s. They helped us understand more, sometimes less about life and the purpose of life and ……if you were there, you may know by now, if you weren’t there, don’t worry too much about it. This is our music, unmatched and unduplicated. I highly recommend listening on headphones, this program is, after all, recorded in stereo. Enjoy Judy Blue Eyes, Dylan and more on today’s Tales Vinyl Tells. I’m glad you’re here, and here we go for more of those Tales. Tales Vinyl Tells-”stories record albums convey”

Episode 176: TVT Salutes Next Door Artists Mike Pinera And Garth Hudson February 3, 2025 Hey and Hello! Welcome in for more of those Tales Vinyl Tells. This is our weekly immersion into some great music that appeared on vinyls, especially during the 60s and 70s. A lot of those albums are still playable today and are played and appreciated all over the world. With a good cleaning of the disc surface and a whole bunch of shipping tape around the jacket and they’re sounding just as good as the day the shrink wrap was removed. You did remove the shrink wrap, didn’t you? Ok, today we’re in our southern studio and we’re saluting two pretty well-heard, maybe not so well known, guys who have joined Petty, Harrison, Lennon, Crosby, Mayall and others who have entered the room next door. It’s our plunge into some of that great album rock especially from the 60s and 70s. The vinyl albums are classic, they’re vintage, and today the upsurge in album sales is really wonderful to see and read about. A lot of artists today are putting out LPs and record pressing has become an art. Welcome along with me. These are the Tales Vinyl Tells. We’re going to play a cut from a newer collection from David Gilmour and his daughter Romany. We’re also going to salute Leland Sklar. He’s still alive and this is a living tribute to him. Episode 173: PCOC Day 4 With Johnny Winter And, Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers and Fleetwood Mac! January 7, 2025 The Post Covid Outdoor Concert series was put together at a time in 2021 and 2022 when the badly mismanaged virus was eating people alive. We didn’t have a clue as to when or how it would end and whether I’d survive if I got it or my love or my children or grand child or family got it and would it kill them. I thought it was imperative that we needed some music that might steer us to a place of comfort and peace. Yeh! Let’s get stoned and put on some tunes! I’m not so much a toker these days but the music can still carry me away. Does it you? What Tales are your Vinyls Telling you? Well then, replaying and reworking some of the Peacocks is intended to carry you away to a live concert, peaceful, fun, beautiful, far out, cool, man. Let’s dig some of the great Johnny Winter with the McCoys and Ric Derringer, Tom Petty and Fleetwood Mac today. This is the entire concert first created Sept. 8, 2021. You know, if you want to hear a Tales Vinyl Tells when it streams live on RadioFreeNashville.org , we do that at 5 PM central time Wednesdays. The program can also be played and downloaded anytime at podbean.com, Apple podcasts, iHeart podcasts, player FM podcasts and many other podcast places. Episode 168: Last Month Of 2024 And The Rock Keeps Rollin' December 3, 2024 This is some of the music that surrounded so many of us boomers during the 60s & 70s. We worked by it, played by it, soared with it, boogied to it and attached some memories to it that may well last a lifetime. For some of us, this music was something we were listening to full time. There’s some Disraeli Gears music first off, Robin Trower, The supergroup The Best, ARS and many more. You know, if you want to hear a Tales Vinyl Tells when it streams live on RadioFreeNashville.org , we do that at 5 PM central time Wednesdays. Episode 167: More Of The Great Hippie Stoner Music You Vaguely Remember November 28, 2024 It’s Thanksgiving morning here. Rainy, cool and I’m getting ready to eat then go to a movie. These tunes this hour are just some of the Tales that the vinyls of the 60s & 70s tell. May you enjoy the day, every day and this fantastic age of album rock. You know, if you want to hear a Tales Vinyl Tells when it streams live on RadioFreeNashville.org , we do that at 5 PM central time Wednesdays. Episode 166:New Version Of An Old One November 20, 2024 I hope you’re well and ready for some music from a lot of West Coast bands today. You know, we dig into these great albums of the 60s and 70s and some of you younger listeners may not have been on the Earth at that time. You know, just a little gleam in your daddy’s eyes? So hello to you younger listeners today . A lot of us were brought up listening to this music that we’re gonna hear today and some of us are getting to hear it another time. If it’s new to you, just dig it! I like to play many album cuts of mostly familiar songs but I do like to throw in some new songs or songs that we really don’t hear that much back in the day. Oh! I never thought I’d use that phrase “back in the day“but there it is. We’re going to hear from Crosby Stills Nash and Young, a Monkee, yes they can be trained, Nashville’s Orleans and quite a number more. As always, I want to thank all the supporters of this program who monthly contribute through Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport . I bow to you, thank you and invite everyone to check out how you can show your love for this awesome music of the hippie generation, whether you were there or just get down with the albums of that time. Remember that Tales Vinyl Tells can be streamed as it happens on RadioFreeNashville.org Wednesdays at 5 Pm Central time and all the episodes are listenable and downloadable on your favorite podcast app (I say probably), just don’t try Spotify. They say it doesn’t allow them to pay their millionth of a cent royalty to artists and I get that. So whatever they say, they remove it so you’ll just have to listen elsewhere. Like Podbean.com or PlayerFM or maybe even StudioMillsWellness.com/tales-vinyl-tells . Take your pick or pick your take. Rock on, take care, stay well and be nice. BH…
Episode 165: Survived Another Election November 14, 2024 We are back again with another expedition into that great album rock of the 60s & 70s here on Tales Vinyl Tells. This expedition has been going on for quite a while now, the podcast version since December 2019. The radio version premiered in the spring of 2022. I vaguely remember the evenings during this music’s time when we’d visit a friend in our apartment complex and we’d burn some while putting on some Carole King or James Taylor or Stones or better yet, Sgt Pepper’s. The smell of incense, a lot of times, could mask the weed aroma and I played the psychedelic Smell of Incense from the West Coast Pop Art Experiment Band along with Graham Nash, some jazzy numbers from Seals and Crofts and Victor Wooten, and the closer is a very rocky one from The Rascals that is really good. Hope you enjoy all that! Show your love for the great album rock of the 60s and 70s by becoming a monthly contributor to Tales Vinyl Tells. Learn more at patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport . Thank you so much, especially you who already contribute monthly and I hope you feel really good supporting this effort to enjoy what I think is the best creative music of this generation. You can stream Tales Vinyl Tells Wednesdays at five central time on Radiofreenashville.org . And all of the episodes are free and downloadable on many podcast apps and of course at studiomillswellness.com/tales-vinyl-tells . Dig this hour!…

Episode 164: Salute To Steve Winwood, Including Dave Mason, Manassas, Marc Cohn Etc November 9, 2024 The version that was heard on the live stream Wednesday evening at 5PM on RadioFreeNashville.org was an edited replay of TVT #20, which was diggable August of 2020. I realized while listening to it that I didn’t play anything by the supergroup Blind Faith so that’s one that’s coming soon. Hope you’ll enjoy this, the original #20…again. There’s Supersession music and Heart as well as the above. Here’s the full length episode. I could dig your support if you want to help with the costs of running a weekly radio show and podcast. Episode 162: Saluting Kristofferson, Lesh, Sergio, John David October 29, 2024 The hourglass is filling with sand. I’ve been working on this one over the past couple weeks and got the word that Phil Lesh passed, I knew that I needed to finish up and get the salutes ready. These four had unique lives and affected millions around the world, like many of the artists from the 60s & 70s did. This hour is a major tease. Do you have a story or memory of any of these artists that you might want to share? A Dead concert maybe? Or some piece of trivia? My email is TalesVinylTells@gmail.com. In case you’ve let it slip your mind, you can hear the initial radio show Wednesdays at 5 PM central time on RadioFreeNashville.org or on an actual radio at 103.7 in Nashville. The stream is more dependable and worldwide. If you’d like to help pay this program’s bills, I welcome your sustaining monthly support. $5, 10, 25 a month helps so much. The details are at Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport . Thank you! All TVT episodes are available FREE to listen to and FREE to download on your favorite podcast app except Spotify (their loss) and at StudioMillsWellness.com/tales-vinyl-tells , our first host. Thank you, Linda!…
