In this episode, I get real about what it means to be your authentic self, and I dive deep into the family trauma that gets passed down through generations. Growing up with parents who didn’t know themselves, I learned that trauma just keeps repeating itself unless we actively break the cycle. I share my personal journey of feeling abandoned by my dad and how, before he passed, I finally got the peace I needed when he opened up about why he stayed away. It wasn’t easy, but it helped me understand the generational wounds he carried. I also talk about how we choose the families we’re born into, and how healing starts with looking at all those pieces that made us who we are—what came from mom, dad, and even from their parents. If you’ve ever wondered why certain patterns keep showing up in your life, chances are, you’re the one who’s meant to heal them. It’s not easy, but it’s part of what we signed up for in this lifetime. In this episode of WTF Spirit? I sat down with Jacob Sams who is currently Miss Gay Dayton and will be turning over the reigns to the new Miss Gay Dayton on August 12th. Jacob has been in the Dayton, Ohio Area for most of his life! He is a hairdresser at Square One Salon ( book with him here ) and a RubiGirl ! (He is the mastermind behind my hairstyle!) He started down a spiritual path at birth, having been brought up in the church with his Mamaw. Although he no longer identifies with that religion any longer he would never discredit what lead him to spirit for the first time. He has studied a WIDE variety of topics to cultivate his own way of doing things. Jacob and I discussed how he views his Drag appearances as part of his spirituality in being able to own who he is as a person and step onto the stage showing others you, too, can be yourself even amongst the doubters. In this episode today, Rev. Maria Leggett starts out the episode pulling cards for the audience members who were live on her Facebook page. Rev. Maria went on to discuss loving family members and people around the world who may have a different belief system than you. It is imperative that we lead our lives through love rather than hate. Just because someone believes differently than you, doesn't mean you cannot love them and get along with them. It means you need to find a common ground in which to have a relationship with them.
