Its drive towards accumulation and geopolitical dominance has wrought hell on the rest of the world’s nations and the planet itself. So why, then, are some so-called Marxists out there trying to wrap themselves up in a flag of U.S. patriotism? Patriotic socialism, MAGA communism, red patriotism—these are just some of the names that have been used to describe a recent phenomenon that, although certainly has its antecedents in things like the LaRouche movement of the mid-20th century, has begun, again, to creep its way into the discourse, albeit mostly online, of the left. What is this phenomenon and what does it get wrong? Why is it an error to attempt to wed U.S. nationalism with Marxism and communism? As we’ve maintained, these ideologies existed among Zionists even before the Mandate period, but here the long line of contingencies led to their ascension. Pan-Arabism transitioned to more localized struggles in which the Soviet Union and the United States emerged as major, opposed, forces. As a benefactor of nobody, a stateless people, Palestinian invisibility and hostility, even among former Arab state allies, began to harden. In this context, the Jordanian Crown kicked off a vicious onslaught to eradicate the PLO from their own borders. Within a year all PLO operations moved from Jordan to Lebanon - a chilling blow against Palestinian self-liberation. A small number of Palestinian “terrorist attacks” committed by radical splinter groups outside of the Palestine-First ideology only encouraged the west to embrace Israel even harder. The Palestinian, when acknowledged at all, became an embodiment of “homicidal hatred” and not a people with a history. Egypt's victory in '56 catapulted pan-Arabism to heights of legitimacy in opposition to the Zionist state. Although this ideology gained mass purchase among Palestinians, a rival "Palestine First" grew out of the Palestinian diaspora yearning for their own state. With the benefit of hindsight, we focus on the founding and early growth of the Fatah's particular articulation of "Palestine First." In Israel, the state went through a rapid modernization which included the first direct connection of the "collective Jew" state identity to the Holocaust in the kidnapping, trial, and execution of Nazi Adolf Eichmann. As 1967 dawned, a bloody confrontation between pan-Arabism and Zionism appeared more and more inevitable. Here we dispel the myths around this cataclysmic event that the State of Israel, and even some of its critical historians, propagate. The Nakba was an explicit, state-designed policy of murder, destruction, and displacement that cannot be extricated from the Palestinian resistance movement today. We additionally tackle the myth of the "expulsion" of Arab Jews from their home countries by discussing the tragic forced migration of Yemenite Jews into Israel, driven by the Zionist state. At the heart of this discussion is an analysis of how historical narratives are weaponized to mystify reality. To build a better world, we must understand the realities of the oppressed and operate on that basis. We cannot simply replace old myths with new. In this episode we detail the geopolitics of the Levant from 1945 to 1957. Nick narrates the intersections and contradictions which developed during the U.N. Partition of Palestine; the first Arab-Israeli War; the years building up to the Suez Crisis; the Second Arab-Israeli War; and the unholy union of the U.S.A. and U.S.S.R. against the tripartite of Israel, France, and Great Britain. We conclude that by 1957, the pieces were all in place for the United States to assume its role as the unwavering imperial accomplice to Israel. Though mentioned, Al-Nakba is discussed more substantially in a subsequent episode .
