This Is Woman's Work with Nicole Kalil

Let’s talk about adulting— actual adulting. Not just paying bills or keeping a houseplant alive, but the kind that involves emotional maturity, healthy boundaries, and conscious self-leadership. Because let’s be honest, most of us weren’t taught how to be fully functioning adults… and it shows. Joining us is Michelle Chalfant , licensed therapist turned holistic life coach, creator of The Adult Chair® model, and author of the new book The Adult Chair: Get Unstuck, Claim Your Power, and Transform Your Life . With millions reached through her podcast, coaching programs, and retreats, she’s here to walk us through the five pillars of being a healthy, grounded adult. Here’s the truth: being an adult isn’t about checking boxes or pretending you’re fine. It’s about owning your truth. Feeling your feelings. Practicing compassion without letting yourself off the hook. It’s about setting firm boundaries—with no need for justification—and recognizing that your triggers are not flaws, they’re clues. None of us were handed a guidebook for how to grow up emotionally. We inherited patterns from people who were figuring it out as they went. But what Michelle shares today is empowering: it’s never too late to unlearn what no longer serves you and become the adult you were meant to be. Whether you’re starting this work or knee-deep in your personal development era, this episode will meet you where you are—and help you move forward with clarity, self-trust, and strength. ×Can we detect cancer so early such that we find the very first cell of cancer? Not just stage 1 cancer, but the first cell of cancer. In this episode, Dr. Michael Levin and I speak with Dr. Azra Raza. She is an oncologist pioneering early detection of cancer using electric signals. So far, our best solution to curing cancer has been to detect it early, and she wants to take this further, by nipping cancer at the very first cell. Her story with cancer is also deeply personal as she lost her husband to the disease. You can see in the episode how much she cares about solving cancer through early detection, and how aggrieved she is about the fact that not only have we made zero progress on cancer in the last 100 years, but doctors are also not focused on cancer prevention. Dr. Raza is also the author of the book The First Cell: And the Human Costs of Pursuing Cancer to the Last. What if chronic diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s are caused by infections we’ve overlooked? We assume chronic disease is caused by genetics and / or lifestyle. However, evolutionary biologist Dr. Paul Ewald says latent viruses and pathogens play a critical hidden role in many diseases. For example, we already know that Human Papillomavirus (HPV) causes cervical cancer. And research indicates how the EBV virus shows up in Multiple sclerosis, and chlamydia pneumonia shows in Alzheimer’s. Deeper investigation into viruses and disease is warranted and will help with better diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Paul Ewald is also the author of Plague Time: The New Germ Theory of Disease, and Evolution of Infectious diseases. Dr. Thomas Seyfried challenges the existing paradigm that says cancer is a genetic disease. He says that instead cancer is caused by damage to the mitochondria. Understanding this completely overturns the management and prevention of cancer. He is a Professor of biology, genetics, and biochemistry at Boston College. He has over 150 peer-reviewed publications and is also the author of books such as, ‘Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: On the Origin, Management, and Prevention of Cancer’. Denis Noble and Michael Levin - two great minds in biology come together on Live Longer World. Denis Noble is a renowned biologist and pioneer in systems biology, known for his groundbreaking work on the electrical activity of the heart and his influential contributions to the understanding of biological systems. Denis is an advocate for taking a systems integrative approach to biology, as opposed to the reductionist gene-centric view that has dominated the field due to Neo-Darwinism. The gene-centric view has failed us in advancing progress on many diseases, and we need to now take a systems based approach focused on functional networks within biological systems. Michael Levin is an American developmental and synthetic biologist at Tufts University, where he is the Vannevar Bush Distinguished Professor. His research is focused on bioelectricity and he is my co-host for this podcast. This interview is part of my series with Dr. Michael Levin where we interview significant people in the history of developmental bioelectricity. Dr. Mustafa Djamgoz was one of the first people to study the role of ion channels and bioelectricity in cancer, which he initially documented in a 1995 paper. His research showed that there was an uptake in voltage-gated sodium channels in all types of cancer metastasis, except prostate cancer, highlighting the significant role of studying ion channels in cancer. Simply put, the spread of cancer cells is linked to increased activity in sodium ion channels, which regulate electrical currents in our cells. Dr. Alfonso Martinez Arias is a development biologist and the author of the book The Master Builder: How the New Science of the Cell Is Rewriting the Story of Life. He also co-authored the biology textbook Principles of Development, which was awarded the Royal Society of Biology book prize. Episode Show Notes: https://livelongerworld.com/p/aarias OVERVIEW: Each of our cells has the same DNA. Yet they somehow differentiate into different body parts - eyes, ears, skin, and so on. There is no information in the DNA that tells our cells what to be. How then do they do it? This is just one example of how contrary to what many might think, DNA does not explain every problem state in biology. Biology has placed too much emphasis on our genes, trying to explain every disease state using genes, when the answer might not reside with them. What if answers to these questions lies with cells? Even though Dr. Martinez started off as a geneticist, he decided to pivot to understand the properties of cells better. By understanding our cells better, we can make further progress in understanding disease, longevity, and development. Towards the end, we also talk about Alfonso's fascinating work on gastruloids which are a model to unravel the mysteries of embryonic development, and understand how humans are formed. This conversation is about the cell’s eye view of biology, and how the gene's eye view of biology might have mislead us. We also talk about why the popular selfish gene theory espoused by Richard Dawkins is incomplete. Looking beyond genes is instrumental to making progress in longevity. The following is a fascinating interview with Dr. Charley Lineweaver, who worked with Paul Davies on his work on cancer which we discuss. Episode Show Notes: https://livelongerworld.com/p/clineweaver Topics include: - the evolutionary and atavistic theory of cancer - the incorrectness of the somatic mutation theory of cancer - a novel take on attacking the weakness of cancer - how embryogenesis could be viewed as cells reverting to old memory - the origins of multicellularity - “Cancer cannot do anything new” The atavistic theory of cancer states that cancer cells revert to an old memory they have from billions of years, but forget the new memory. The old memory pertains to constant cell proliferation, which happened as single-celled creatures, and in fact in embryogenesis as well. The new memory pertains to regulating cell proliferation and cells knowing when to stop cellular division. In cancer, it seems like cells forget this new memory and revert to the old memory. This theory has many interesting explanations and predictions which we dive into in the conversation. Enjoy! Stephanie Seneff is the pioneer in raising concerns around glyphosate, a chemical and active ingredient in RoundUp and other pesticides, which has practically infiltrated our food system, water bodies, and soil. Glyphosate has been linked to several diseases including liver disease, autoimmunity, neurological disorders, reproductive issues, microbiome problems, and more. Dr. Stephanie Seneff has spent 10+ years researching glyphosate’s harmful impact on our health, and documented her findings in her book Toxic Legacy: How the Weedkiller Glyphosate is Destroying our Health and the Environment. More recently, Stephanie has been doing research on deuterium (a hydrogen isotope in the body) and how glyphosate can cause an excess of deuterium, potentially leading to cancer and other health consequences. Glyphosate is affecting each one of us. It’s worth paying attention to this toxic chemical. Episode Show Notes: https://livelongerworld.com/p/sseneff Find me (Aastha) on X: https://x.com/aasthajs DR. This is the first of several interviews Michael Levin and I will do with significant people in the history of developmental bioelectricity. Richard Nuccitelli is a legend, having invented (with Lionel Jaffe, in 1974) the Vibrating Probe - a technique that allowed the non-invasive sensing of ion currents around living tissues. This is about a ~1 hour conversation in which he talks about his background, the history of the field, and his current clinical work on the bioelectrics of cancer. Episode Show Notes: https://livelongerworld.com/p/rnuccitelli Find me: https://twitter.com/aasthajs BACKGROUND: In 2022, I interviewed Dr. Michael Levin on his work on bioelectricity in cells and how that has the potential to solve cancer and aging. Since then, Mike has also appeared on Lex Fridman and many other podcasts talking about his revolutionary work. Amongst all the podcasts I did, Mike’s work struck me as profound yet underappreciated. The field of biology has focused on the DNA and the relevance of the electric currents in our cells is not appreciated. Yes, the electrical energy powering our cells is what keeps us alive! Earlier this year, I decided to dive deeper into bioelectricity. I’m starting by exploring the history of the field in conjunction with Michael Levin. We’re doing a series of interviews talking to scientists in the field to understand the origins of the field, bottlenecks, progress so far, and what the future could look like. Today's interview is the first in the series with Dr. Richard Nuccitelli. He has a fascinating entry into the world of aging research - it all began with training lions! There are many open questions on the caloric restriction research for enhancing longevity and we dive into that. Further, a lot of Dr. Austad’s work focuses on what long-lived animal species can teach us about living longer and healthier lives. His lab works on exotic species, like clams that live more than 500 years, and hydra that don’t age at all, in order to discover aging treatments. He also tries to uncover the mysteries around why men and women respond differently to longevity therapeutics. Otto Warburg was a Nobel-Prize winning German scientist during the era of Hitler and the Nazi’s and he was the first person to put the metabolic story of cancer on the map. The famous “Warburg Effect” that shows how cancer cells have an increase in glucose uptake even in the presence of oxygen, is named after him. It was a fascinating conversation talking about how the story of cancer research has evolved - how cancer cells eat to the discovery of oncogenes to coming full circle and making the connection between the two, and what the debate still holds in the story. We also talk about how cancer cells take up a lot of glucose, feed on sugar, and the connection between obesity and cancer. I hope you enjoy the conversation! All platforms / Episode Show Notes: https://livelongerworld.substack.com/p/vgladyshev Dr. Vadim Gladyshev is a professor at Harvard Medical school and a Director of redox medicine at Brigham and Women’s hospital, where he runs his own lab. We had a brilliant discussion which started off by talking about his work on selenium. Selenium is found is Brazil nuts and we discussed its connection to aging and cancer prevention, and also some of the harmful effects it can have. Dr. Gladyshev calls it the good, the bad, the ugly nature of selenium. Then, we discussed a fair bit on his theory of aging before and after development. Most people believe that the germline which is the reproductive cells do not age, but his lab’s work has shown how the germline does in fact age. On this point, his lab also has interesting results on how rapamycin during development extended lifespan in mice. It’s important to understand the basic science and understand more on the aging process in order to crack it. Dr. Gladyshev shares his views on this too and his research is certainly a step towards cracking the aging code. I hope you enjoy the conversation! Dr. Richard Miller runs one of the labs for the Interventions Testing Program or the ITP, which is largely considered the gold standard for testing longevity drugs. This was one of the best conversations I’ve had on longevity supplements that affect lifespan and those that might me subject to mere hype. Dr. Miller is rigorous in his approach and states the data clearly. He also has opinions on lifespan vs. healthspan that are unique from those of most others and worth paying attention to. I genuinely walked away having learned so much from this conversation and feeling more awakened, and I hope it is useful to you too in parsing the data out there on longevity supplements. In today’s episode, you will learn: - The 4 winning drugs that increase lifespan in mice as tested by the ITP: Rapamycin, Acarbose, 17-alpha estradiol, Canagliflozin - 3 other drugs that produce small lifespan benefits: NDGA, Glycine, Captopril - Drug combinations: Rapamycin + Acarbose, Rapamycin + Metformin - Drugs that show no lifespan increase in mice in the ITP: Resveratrol, Nicotinamide-Riboside (NR), Fisetin, Curcumin, MCT Oil, Green tea extract, Fish Oil + more - Richard’s thoughts on lifespan vs. healthspan All platforms / Episode Show Notes / Timestamps: https://livelongerworld.substack.com/p/rmiller Find the previous podcast episodes & subscribe to be notified: https://www.livelongerworld.com/podcast Sign up for Premium Subscriber Summarized Show Notes: https://www.livelongerworld.com/premium Support on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/livelongerworld One-Time support: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/livelongerworld RICHARD MILLER LINKS: Website: http://www.richmillerlab.com/ Photography: https://richardmiller.zenfolio.com/ Interventions Testing Program: https://www.nia.nih.gov/research/dab/interventions-testing-program-itp LIVE LONGER WORLD LINKS: Website: https://www.livelongerworld.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/livelongerworld Newsletter: https://livelongerworld.substack.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/longevityfuture/ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/livelongerworld YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/LiveLongerWorld Premium Subscriber: https://www.livelongerworld.com/premium TIMESTAMPS: 0:55 Richard Miller Intro 1:51 Richard Miller Wildlife photography 3:30 ITP - the gold standard for testing longevity drugs & winning drugs 10:51 Rapamycin, Rapamycin + Acarbose 18:48 Rapamycin + Acarbose Dosing Schedule 20:15 Combination of drugs, Rapamycin + Metformin 21:56 17-Alpha Estradiol 25:45 Canagaflozin 31:34 Does Richard take the 4 winning drugs? 32:46 3 Drugs that have small lifespan effects & promising 36:30 GPLD-1 & shared mechanisms in longevity drugs 44:04 Resveratrol in ITP 46:27 NR, NMN 52:34 Curcumin, Green Tea Extract, MCT Oil 54:54 Fisetin & Senolytics 56:12 Why most published research findings are false 1:00:03 Healthspan biomarkers at the ITP 1:02:38 Can you have healthspan without lifespan? 1:07:37 Fish Oil, Spermidine, Sulforophane 1:12:13 Unpublished data Richard is excited about 1:17:47 Flying Pigs & Aubrey De Grey 1:20:00 Exponential rise in aging research Episode Show Notes: https://livelongerworld.substack.com/p/rmiller Thanks for listening & if you enjoy the episode, let's spread the message on longevity. Yuri Deigin is the founder and CEO of YouthBio Therapeutics which is a company that is working on Epigenetic reprogramming or using the Yamanka factors to achieve partial reprogramming. Epigenetic reprogramming has been in the news lately because of several companies being started in the space, with some notable ones being Altos Labs funded by Jeff Bezos and NewLimit founded by Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase. If you’re not familiar with this trending, hyped (rightly so this time - it is pretty amazing!) research on Epigenetic reprogramming and Yamanaka factors to turn cells back to a younger state, we dive into it in today’s episode! As a last point to Yuri’s introduction, because I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention it, you may have heard of his name recently because he was in fact one of the first people to talk about the COVID lab leak theory and wrote extensively on it. This speaks to his scientific mindset and desire to uncover the truth. In today’s episode, you will learn: - The Strong Epigenetic Theory of Aging, as coined by Yuri (He calls David Sinclair’s theory The Weak Epigenetic Theory of Aging) - Epigenetic Reprogramming using Yamanaka factors to turn the cell into a younger state - What is it and what are the open questions in the field - What are the cancer risks associated with it - Why Yuri believes in Cryonics - Why Yuri got interested in uncovering the COVID-19 Lab Leak theory - Pharma in Russia If you are a premium subscriber, you can also read the summarized notes of these learnings in the show notes. My guest today is Dr. David Gems who runs the C. Elegans Aging lab at the University College London. We had a fascinating discussion talking about emerging paradigms in the theories of aging. We discussed the hyperfunction theory or the programmatic theory of aging which gives a better integrated understanding of the different theories of aging that have been presented such as damage accumulation, evolutionary, antagonistic pleiotropy. It has been assumed that molecular damage is always the cause of aging, but the programmatic theory of aging shows that that might not be the case. We also discussed his critique of the hallmarks of aging and how there should be a better paradigm for the aging field. Lastly, we also discussed how research from his lab on C. Elegans might explain some of the conflict around whether sirtuins affect lifespan and how C. Elegans also show versions of this programmatic theory of aging, which can give us a better understanding of how to study aging. Note: There is a point in the conversation (40:41) where David pulls up some slides to better explain the Multifactorial Model of Aging. 1 #12 Dr. Bruce Ames | Longevity Micronutrients, Triage Theory, and Vitamin D for Healthy Aging 27:43
My guest today is Dr. Bruce Ames who has received several awards and accolades for developing the Ames test which is used to detect carcinogens in commercial products. He showed how there were carcinogens in products such as hair dyes and children’s pajamas! Later, Dr. Bruce Ames turned to studying micronutrients and how deficiency of important vitamins and minerals leads to accelerated aging. He came up with the Micronutrient triage theory, which says that when nutrient intake is insufficient, the body has a rationing mechanism and favors proteins needed for immediate survival at the expense of protection against future damage. Dr. Bruce Ames is 93 years old and says that he is still exercising and eating healthy greens cooked by his lovely Italian wife! However, he says his cognitive capacity has slowed down (this is why we need rejuvenation therapies, even for the brain: listen to my episode with Dr. Jean Hebert who talks about Brain Aging and his strategy to reverse aging through replacement of the body parts: https://youtu.be/oerGUepWsH8). I am grateful that I had a chance to converse with him on Vitamin D, longevity micronutrients, how micronutrient deficiency can lead to accelerated aging, his take on the science behind reversing aging, and his advice to younger people.
