So far, Hamilton, Madison, and Jay have spoken at length about the benefits of union in regards to defense and foreign policy. Now it's time to talk about money. No one likes to pay taxes, in particular the founding fathers. They fought a war over them, for crying out loud! So, why is Hamilton arguing for taxes? Well, he's not really arguing for them as much as he is arguing for responsible taxation. Who to tax? What to tax? How much to tax? The founders, including Hamilton, were not fools. They realized taxation was necessary in order to build a nation. "A nation cannot long exist without revenues." Hamilton makes some general proposals, intending to stick mainly on duties collected from trade. He did not care much for direct (aka income) taxes, and didn't like the idea of taxing the farmers (aka the working class) either. He doesn't delve much into detail about taxation or how to go about it. He seems to merely be saying: Hey! We probably might want to start thinking about how we're going to pay for things like a navy and stuff. The benefit of the Union is that, at least when it comes to trade, it will be relatively easy to manage rates and prevent contraband. If you haven't done so before, read up on the Fair Tax. Alexander Hamilton makes a case for being in a position of strength in order to have good commercial relations with foreign nations; one way to show such strength is to have a strong navy. As in the preceding papers, he shows the benefits of remaining united with one strong government, as opposed to separating the region into several parts. 1 Federalist X: The Same Subject Continued: The Union as a Safeguard Against Domestic Faction and Insurrection 39:56
In this episode, I read what has to be one of the best essays I have read. James Madison makes a clear and robust case for the adoption of a republic over a direct democracy, and how the former is better at resolving factions than the latter. There are a lot of "times change, people don't moments" in this paper. I only cover a few, in particular, those that show Madison would be fighting against the evils of socialism if he was alive today. In Federalist 9, Alexander Hamilton continues the argument for unifying the states under one federal government, this time focusing on the advantage a unified nation would have against domestic factions and insurrections. He extensively quotes from a French political philosopher by the name of Montesquieu , seeing as to how he, like we do today, had to deal with people taking things out of context in order to support their arguments; in this case, the "anti-federalists" relied on only portions of Montesquieu's work to support their position. In this paper, Hamilton warns that a disunited America will only result in hostilities between the separate states or confederacies, because we would not enjoy an "insular situation," which would require a minimum soldiery; each state or confederacy would immediately raise armies to "protect" themselves from possible incursions from the others, in particular the smaller states or confederacies. He also warns that a people who live in constant fear of attack will readily give over their rights to the government or its agencies in order to feel more secure. Thus, a United America, resulting in a more secure situation for the people, would also have the benefit of securing the rights of the People. If only Hamilton were here now... 1 Federalist VII-The Same Subject Continued: Concerning Dangers from Dissensions Between the States 26:32
In this episode, I read Federalist 7, which to me, sounded like Hamilton was giving a lecture at a college. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but after being able to draw some strong emotions from Federalist 6 (sarcasm, frustration, etc.), Federalist 7 seemed kind of "dry;" however, it was still very instructive, and there were a couple "times change, people don't" moments in it. In 7, Hamilton concludes his argument on dissensions between the States, citing possible sources of tensions between the States which would escalate to wars should the Union were to collapse. 1 Federalist III & IV The Same Subject Continued: Concerning Dangers From Foreign Force and Influence 32:41
Federalist III and IV were relatively short, so I decided to put them together in one episode. John Jay builds on his case, which he began in Federalist II, that having one Federal Government would be more beneficial for the people of the newly formed nation. In III he argues that a united government would be in a stronger position to negotiate treaties and prevent wars; in IV he lays out the advantages in being united should a war with another country break out. Times change, people don't. I think that will be the motto of this project. I am astounded at how writings from almost 250 years ago apply to our government, and the state of our country, today. In this episode, I read the second Federalist essay, written by John Jay, aptly named Federalist II. The next essays (Federalist III-V), all deal with the same subject, "dangers from foreign force and influence," and I will be going through them in the coming weeks. Here, Jay begins his argument that it is more beneficial for the country to become ONE nation under ONE federal government, as opposed to having several "independent sovereign states." In particular, he points out the hypocrisy, however diplomatically, of some of his contemporaries who were initially for a federal government, and then suddenly changed their position against it. I also found it funny, in a sad sort of way, that even back then, there were some members of the press who were against the Union. Times change, people don't. Keith Ellison, attorney general for the state of Minnesota, announced on June 3, 2020 that he is elevating the murder charge against Derek Chauvin from third degree murder to second degree murder.
