As a way to lace up the last of this course, I have added all of the audios + a corresponding eCompendium to Podcast Growth For The Holidays, so you have it all in one place on this lovely landing page. I guarantee it will keep you busy for a while :) Currently there is only 1 chapter, but more are too come SUPER SOON. You can get it from here: https://gum.co/eSVm Hope you enjoy listening….do let me know your thoughts :)…
Lovely Let’s go back to the act of listening. I know for the most part, you have listened to something that had to do with this play-time that we’ve had together. ▸ There were audio pieces that went along with the emails and FB posts ▸ There was some editing involved with our play, therefore you HAD to listen. ▸ You heard your own resistance possibly about the process - even if it was not verbalized. ▸ There were other people posting their tidbits of audio and you heard them. That last one = GOLD. And that’s how I’m going to wrap up the week. I can’t pinpoint exactly when I heard Cliff Ravenscraft (The Podcast Answerman) first talk about THE TREASURE of your listener(s). But I can remember that the use of the word treasure really struck me. For me at least, when I think of the word treasure it connotes a lot and it’s multilayered. I go back to when I was a kid imagining finding hidden treasure, looking through my grandmothers drawers and countless boxes knowing that I was diving into some serious treasure, finding my Love and knowing he would be the father of my children, the daily observations of my girls playing with the most mundane things and transforming them into treasure….I could go on and on. In all the examples that I mention above, there is a level of ‘diving in’ required, sifting through, uncovering, and most importantly a deep recognition that it IS treasure. Go back to when you heard one of the pieces of audio from someone else in the group. Note the level of reaction that you had to it, especially the first time. You had no idea what you’d hear. You had no real expectations. You did want to listen. And then you consumed it…and you said to yourself “that was so cool!” A connection was made. You got the treasure. This wonderful way of podcasting is like that. Your audience looks for treasure every time they step into you. They have no real expectation. They are listening by choice. They are listening because they already love you and they’ve invested in you because you are YOU. That is it. Now let’s turn this around a bit, to the receiving end of things. What was it like to be heard, after sharing your audio or making your audio (even if no one heard it?) This type of creative work with audio, this voice work (if you will,) this collaborative experience of listening and sharing has been a dream of mine for YEARS. I’ve been imagining this type of gathering for a looooong time, in a multitude of ways. I am deeply passionate about it. I know first hand what it means to finally SPEAK IT OUT and SAY IT and the incredible power that has… BUT all this time it was in my head, in my notebooks, in my own personal creative time, staying only here, with me. When I decided to do this intimate little workshop it was my way of taking a baby-step, to see if this sort of work had wings in this type of iteration. Here’s the treasure that I uncovered: ❀ Taking action TRUMPS EVERYTHING. ❀ The power of Voice and sound are exactly as powerful - even more than I imagined. ❀ YOU are treasure When I heard the first piece of audio come in, I cried. I cried because of the alchemy of the exchange. The embodiment of a dream. Of the treasure of THE ONE. I know that there are more than ONE of you, that’s not the point, the point is that it took ONE to reflect back to me the treasure that was already there. That is your audience. The ONE listener. The ONE treasure that you already have. Dig deep into those that are ALREADY listening. You’ve stepped into this digital creative collage, so you are already are one that resonates with seeing things from a slightly different angle, so choose to shift the way you see your download numbers differently. Let go of the numbers and concentrate on the ONE listener. One is enough. One is enough to nourish, cultivate and grow your work. The One turns into the Many - remind me, someday to dive deeper into that :) So we finish today with this: 1. YOU are an absolutely essential part of your work - remove that - and it becomes meaningless. 2. There is an alchemy that happens in the exchange of your voice that you cannot get in any other medium 3. Change the paradigm of seeing download numbers to the treasure of your listener. NO (s). One. And sooooooo now I address some logistics! The FB Group will stay open till at least the end of the year. I will be involved as much as I can be in there, so please feel free to post your work if you haven’t already!!! I will get the 6pm audio piece to you very soon - I’m waiting for more of your pieces to come in! I’ve got about 1/3 of your sounds. I want at least a couple of more. I promise you won’t miss it Podcasting Growth For The Holidays is a contribute what you can model. I’ve set up a page for you to choose the value. My suggestion is $37 , but it’s absolutely up to you, no guilt or pressure. BONUS: I’m sharing the first (chapter?) of an eBook that I have called Replenish Your Podcast With RE-Connection. It is less creative and more tactical. It is 5 days worth of actions you can take to grow your podcast. The first chapter is about connecting with other podcasters. You’ll get the download when you buy the course . Here is the link: https://gumroad.com/l/eSVm I am so deeply honored and humbled of your courage and the fact that you took action with me. I am incredibly grateful. Thank you for your participation. Thank you for your openness and your willingness to play. All my love, Elsie PS I’ll be waiting for your 6pm pieces!!!! Send them in!!!! AND just because this week has come to an end doesn’t mean that you stop posting your audio in the group or sharing it with me!!!! Choose to share your voice!…
We are almost done!! Wow. You guys have exceeded my expectation - by a ton. Today we get together and weave our voices to create something much bigger! Super simple. Honestly. We have made podcasting - the creation of it, all parts of production, a solo experience (even if you have a team) and yes, there are exceptions to this. I think that something can change when you are part of something bigger, or a larger project that we can all work together in - it’s kinda like having people over for dinner and creating our food together. :: The Project :: At 6pm your time today, record what’s going on around you for 1 to 2 minutes. That’s it. If you go over by a minute or so, that’s ok…BUT adhering to the time frame is part of the exercise :) You can simply record the environment, the sounds, the happenings and let them speak for themselves OR you can lead us into a sound seeing tour of what you see, like the narrator of your life. Although those are your two options, I’d like to challenge you to do more of a sound-seeing tour, as another way to get your voice out there in a whole new way. It would be awesome if you could do it at 6pm BUT if you cannot, any 1–2 minutes of your life TODAY will do. Send me your audio as soon as you have it. You can email it to me at elsie@yogeek.me or you can send it to me via WeTransfer.com . It’s up to you. I assume email will be the easiest to do. I will then put all of your sounds together into a sweet collaborative piece. I can wait to get these! ♥ PS: If you want to listen to a sound-seeing tour, check out this bike ride by a priest from The Netherlands on the great wall of China :) http://media.blubrry.com/catholicinsider/p/traffic.libsyn.com/sqpn01/ICH_20120926c_xiancitywallbikeride.mp3 PPS: If you haven’t had a chance to join the FB Group , don’t delay!…
Hello lovely Today, is a short little piece. You’ve had some time to play and to explore. You’ve prepared. You’ve tried new ways of putting things together. You’ve heard the voices of those in the same playground (that is if you’re playing over on the Facebook Group - and no pressure if you’re going at this alone) But most importantly you have listened to yourself - the sound of YOU I have a feeling that you know what’s coming, because we are bringing it back to your current work. Although the following questions are easily answered in your head (maybe) I would like for you to take time to sit with the questions a little bit. I want you to brain storm the answers, free flow style, and collect what comes out in your most favorite way to capture genius: mind map, digital text app, physical notebook, audio, whatever. What have you found with this play that is missing from your podcast? Did you find yourself breaking patterns in your production? And how did they help reveal something new about you? How can you incorporate aspects of what you’ve learned into the process of your current podcast? I want you to let go of your excuses for a bit. I can just hear you now…. “But I have an interview show!” “But I can’t use the music I want to use!” “But this is a business podcast, I can’t tell personal stories!” “But I have a set format!” “But…..” I could go on and on and on ;) I’m only requesting that you ask the questions. I’m not asking you for answers or to do EXACTLY what we did together in this playtime IN your podcast. This is simply about creating the space to play, to let YOU come into the picture more, to let yourself move from a different place when you produce - remember - foundation? If you keep YOUrself in your work your podcast will grow. The work will grow. Your confidence will grow. Your instincts will grow. Your platform will grow. Got it? :) Today all you have to do is capture. Tomorrow we will attempt our first collaborative work, and it doesn’t have anything to do with today! I’d love for you to share what comes up for you regarding these questions. You are welcome to email me elsie@yogeek.me, leave me a message or simply post in in the Facebook Group ! Your sharing is really helping the whole group level up. ♥…
I wanted to give you a bit more time diving into the every day type of stuff that rocks your world. Yesterday we talked of food and the things that you liked to watch. I want you to take that a little deeper into your world and observe all the little things that are 100% you, that you do because…well…you like it. Usually, these little things are kinda quirky :) I’ll share a few here…. I’m obsessed with legwarmers. I have around 20 pair!!!! I wear legwarmers almost every day, the only time that I don’t is when it’s SUPER hot outside. I don’t really wear them as a fashion statement, I wear them because I find them totally useful. For whatever reason legwarmers make sense to me. You know the image header for the FB group? That blue hoodie thing that I’m wearing? One of my best friends gave me this head to toe fleece monk robe looking thing in my late twenties in LA of all things. She knows I tend to run super cold and she saw it and thought I needed to have it. It’s like my most favorite thing EVER! I’ve carried it with me through SOOOOOOO many life changes. Usually it’s stayed inside of a box, as my body has become pretty acclimated to the cold but now that we are in the mountains, it’s the PERFECT piece of clothing. It hit me the other day that this blue monk outfit was meant for me to have HERE and NOW. I look pretty darn silly in it, but you know what? I don’t care. I am super cozy. And NO it’s not like a snuggy AT ALL. I LOVE doing laundry. No clue why…there’s something about the whole washing of the clothes and then folding them all into neat little piles….I’m NOT one that loves to be organized and clean house and do chores and all that, but there’s something about spending time folding clothes that for whatever reason really rocks my world. I told you some of these things are totally quirky! And I don’t know how long I’ll feel as strongly as I feel about the above, maybe there will come a time when I’m ready to let go of wearing legwarmers? Who knows! It’s not about holding ON to defining yourself. It’s about seeing yourself in the world and celebrating what is. I might change. I might totally let go of leg warmers and give away my blue monk outfit, and even develop an aversion to doing laundry, but for right now, those are things that totally feel “me.” You will be recording 3 short stories about these little quirky insights about yourself. It could be about the food, the stuff you watch, or possibly some interesting things that you uncover. AND you have to do a tiny bit of searching today. Really tiny bit. I implore you to set a timer of NO MORE THAN 10 MINUTES. Promise. You will go to http://dig.ccmixter.org/ In the search bar right at the top, you will stick one of the labels that you have chosen for yourself: playful, creative, mother, producer, etc. You will listen to up to 5 pieces of the music that comes up (trust me. only 5) You will choose 2 pieces to download You will use those two pieces as part of your second audio piece however you see fit. NOTE: choose a song that doesn’t have a $ sign :) I’ve been down this rabbit hole. Do it as fast as you can. Don’t second guess yourself. Don’t get obsessive about listening to ALL OF THE MUSIC. Just choose the first 2 that resonate, make a decision and get out of there. CCmixter can suck entire days… You’ve got your 2nd piece of audio to work on! It doesn’t have to be long, you can keep it to less than 5 minutes, for the whole thing! I know you can do it. Now go on and make some digital magic :) ♥ PS Send me an email to elsie@yogeek.me with or without an audio note, send me audio feedback via SpeakPipe , or tag me in the Facebook Group ! I’m here to help! Don’t let the falling behind demons get a hold of you. You are exactly where you are meant to be.…
For Day 1, I asked you to get deep. I mean answering the questions about what you value, labels and of course the doozy of what you stand for. Ya, crazy pants. Those questions are meant to ground you, to create an earthy, heavy feeling (in a good way) to get you embedded back into what has meaning to you, and why you do what you do. This is all well and good but hanging out there for too long can be too much. I know when I spend time playing in the DEEP for too long of a time, I kinda get tired :) For today’s playcercise it’s all about keeping it light baby! PLUS, it’s Monday…. You’ll be going into your daily life AND pop-culture. I’ll pose the questions and you gotta go to the PURE EXCITEMENT, and I’ll do my best to give you examples. 1. What do you eat or drink that makes you soooooooooooo thrilled that you have a mouth. You only need to share ONE but if you get all wound up, then for goshes sake go for it. NOTE: with all of these there will be a lot more to the audio, so if you wanna get a clear idea of what I’m looking for listen! Here are a few of mine: Enjoy Life Semi-Sweet Chocolate Mini Chips, Beau Jo’s Pizza in Idaho Springs, my morning coffee, paleo mini matcha muffins from the East End Food Co-op. I want you to get SUPER clear about the food. If you love chocolate cake, what kind of chocolate cake? From a box? The cake your grandma baked for you when you were 5? The cake from a particular little restaurant down your street? And I want you to get as descriptive as you can about these. How does the food smell? taste? look like? feel? You get the gist - use all your 5 senses to describe as much as you possibly can. Aaaaand if a story happens to come out of it, BONUS. Employ this tactic for the following question as well. 2. What do you LOVE LOVE LOVE to watch? T.V., Netflix, YouTube, Podcast, Movies, Ballet, Shakespeare Theater, the rain… Again, you really only need one. Here are some from me: Sherlock and Apple Events. You are going to have to listen to the audio to hear why!!! I hope that you get why we are doing this. When you just LOOOOOOVE something just because YOU love it, because it touches you in a particular way, it evokes a whole body experience - even if you’re just watching or even if you’re just thinking about it. That’s the space of magic. That’s where creativity comes from. It comes from when you whole self is wrapped up into it. I will leave you today thinking about these wonderful things that just rock your world. For today and tomorrow dive deep into the lightness of the world around you and the things that you love, that make you feel like you are a 3 year old that finally recognizes that they get presents for their birthday. Gather all the stuff that you love, the stuff that makes you giddy, and see how many stories you could tell about each thing. And tell the stories. Tell the stories as if you are sharing these incredible discoveries with someone that is always ready to listen to you with their whole selves. And record yourself. ♥ PS I’m gonna plant the seed…I’d love for you to share what’s come up for you with these exercises, which includes possibly sharing some of your audio!!! Day 5 will be more about connection…just planting the seeds!!! PPS Send me an email to elsie@yogeek.me with or without an audio note, send me audio feedback via SpeakPipe , or tag me in the Facebook Group ! I’m here to help!…
A story is only as good as the one that listens to it. Listening is a much overlooked and infinitely powerful skill. Undoubtedly, if I’m in conversation with someone, and my yoga podcast comes up they ask, “but how can people do yoga if it’s just audio?” The funny thing is, that I never asked myself that question. It made absolute sense for me to do a audio podcast of a yoga class, as it’s the skill of listening that takes you deeper into the vast intelligence of your body and hearing what it has to say. Without the willingness to listen, you can’t practice yoga. And I’m going to ask YOU to do the same. Yesterday you began the process of capturing 5 pieces of audio. You may or may not have had the opportunity to record your stuff. That is completely ok. BUT, I will now ask you to listen. 1. I want you to listen to your recordings and if you haven’t recorded, I want you to read your pieces and listen to the words anyway - in your own head. Here’s the key: you’ve got to get past YOURSELF. And how in the world does one do THAT??? Listen and stop the judgment. Listen and stop the mind chatter. Listen and feel what is coming from your Foundation, from that underlying basis for everything that you do that is built from your core. If what you hear in your work, doesn’t resonate, consider refining what you’ve put down. NOTE: the word I use is resonate, which is very different from judgment. “To resonate is to make, hear, or even understand a deep, full sound…Sound can resonate when broadcast through speakers, and so can an idea or feeling, when expressed articulately or with passion.” ▸ What are the words or phrases that pop out at you the most about your work? ▸ When you’re listening, does your body feel relaxed and receptive OR are you tightening up and getting all wound up? ▸ If you are tightening up, is that based on the fact that you feel vulnerable or is it because it doesn’t feel like your “truth?” 2. Make adjustments to your work depending what you experienced listening to your self, via your ears and via your body. You may not make ANY changes at all. Cool beans. And if something really popped out at you that you need to add or take away, do it. Weaving your story together I mentioned yesterday that I wanted these pieces of audio to be like notecards that can easily be moved around. 3. Since you’ve now spent some time with your work I want you to put them together in a sequential pattern that feels like you are telling a story. EX: Labels, Nov/Dec story, song, what you value, who you want to be in the world OR Who you want to be in the world, Labels, song, Nov/Dec story, what you value OR You can get all creative and weave the music throughout… Think of molding what you’ve created into an audio piece that you get to have with you, in your pocket, whenever you need a little re-connection time. 4. Edit it all together OMG. I totally just said that. Yes. Edit it all together. IF YOU DON’T HAVE TIME (or you have no clue how to do it) - send it to me. Email me each of your pieces of audio and/or send it via WeTransfer. I will put it together for you. Make sure you give me instructions of how you want it all to fit together! Let me know if you have any questions about the above. Send me an email to elsie@yogeek.me with or without an audio note, send me audio feedback via SpeakPipe , or tag me in the Facebook Group ! I’m here to help! Don’t let the falling behind demons get a hold of you, most ESPECIALLY make your choose to not engage because it feels like too much. If all you can do right now is READ and/or LISTEN to the audio or keep up with the podcast, then so be it. This is something you can step into, when you have time or when you feel ready. The playground is always ready for you to play! Now go create some digital magical fun!!! ♥ Elsie…
I always start with that. So let’s look into it really quick: Foundation ::: An underlying basis or principle for something. ::: The lowest load-bearing part of a building, typically below ground level. LOVE those. OK. As quirky as it might sound, the first thing that I want you to do, is to dive into your foundation. What’s the underlying basis or principle for YOU. And I want you to get BIG. I don’t want you to get into the why of your podcast. I want you to get super spacious in your thinking and the things that rock your world and spark you into BEING. Let’s take a little ride into memory lane, as this * season * generally has a faster path into that spark. Ok, so in an utopian world, these last days of the year hold within them the potential for exploration, magic, re-connection and the ability to stay open and do unexpected things. I want you to let a story of November/December past lead you to your FOUNDATION. Prepping For Play What’s the thing that you ADORE to do, or have loved to do during the end of the year. I want you to go to the happy, to the exhale, to the possible fleeting moment when you felt magic at any time of your life. NOTE: if you are totally stuck - straight up, make it up. I cannot even tell you how that little trick has helped me get out some doozies! You’ve never felt so under pressure as when a 3 and 6 year old say “Mama tell me a story!!!” Crazy magical things have come out of my mouth! Make a list of the things that you stand for and value. Try to keep the list to one word items, not sentences or phrases. Have at least 10 on this list. Who do you want to be in the world? I know doozie right? Don’t let the question be bigger than it is. Brainstorm. Let yourself come up with at least 5 answers. Make a list of all the ways that you label yourself or the world labels you (good or bad). Remove the labels that no longer serve you or you don’t want. Add labels that you want to be or that are missing. Your favorite holiday song past or present (if you CANNOT STAND holiday music, choose a song that that always makes you happy when it unexpectedly comes up on the radio) I want you to think of each of the exercises above as individual note cards. Their importance can change. Workflow We all work differently. Words come easily on a page for me, but I know that for some, words come much easier out of the mouth, so you can do a free form recording to come up with any part of the above. The Play!!! You’ve got the content. Record yourself reading or riffing/improvising each of the exercises above into separate files, except for number 5. If you have a copy of your favorite holiday song keep it handy. THE RECORDINGS DON’T HAVE TO BE PERFECT! ● If you don’t have time- record on the go - grab that smartphone that you have and record wherever you are. It doesn’t matter if you’re interrupted, the phone rings, the delivery man makes an appearance. Who cares. ● It’s gonna feel WEIRD sometimes. So what. Do it anyway. ● If you don’t have a recording device use this: https://www.speakpipe.com/voice-recorder My goal here is to make you think a little bit, have you engage muscles that perhaps you haven’t before, and engage in your world as PART of making the art of you. Let your everyday life be a part of your process. Let your daily life inform how you engage with this play. I’m here for any part of this experience…. ▸ Tag me in the Facebook group if you have questions - Here’s the link to the group if you haven’t joined ▸ email me voice or regular ‘ol text emails :) - elsie@yogeek.me Now go have some digital magical fun! ♥ Elsie PS. If you need help subscribing to the podcast (since you have to manually add the feed to however you consume your podcast) let me know!…
