Why do so many of us get nervous when public speaking? Communication expert Lawrence Bernstein says the key to dealing with the pressure is as simple as having a casual chat. He introduces the "coffee shop test" as a way to help you overcome nerves, connect with your audience and deliver a message that truly resonates. After the talk, Modupe explains a similar approach in academia called the "Grandma test," and how public speaking can be as simple as a conversation with grandma. ×Revelation 20 is the book's last survey of the Church Age, viewed from the persepctive of Satan bound. We see that Christ's cross has restricted the devil, and the saint reign in heaven with Christ. But at the end of the age Satan will be let loose, to be finally destroyed. And after that comes the Judgment, where condemnation is by works, and salvation by grace.…
At Pentecost we remember and celebrate the sending of the Holy Spirit upon the Church. Several times in Scripture the Spirit is called the Spirit of Christ, why is that? We see that the Spirit was sent by Christ, the Spirit bears witness to Christ, and the Spirit unites to Christ.
Revelation 19 shows us two last suppers - the Marriage Supper of the Lamb, and the Supper of the Great God. All mankind will be at one or another of these; either saved by grace in the Church, or justly condemned for sin. The justice of God is satisfied, and the grace of God glorifed.
God has entered into Covenant with his people, and thus his people respond to him according to his Word, which tells us what he has done and who he is. We see in Deuteronomy 5 the repetition of the Ten Commandments, which teach us what godliness and goodness look like, and are reminded the needof a covenant mdiator, a go-between, pointing us to Christ.…
Christ has given his Church a ministry; what does that ministry look like? We see in Matthew 10 that it is a prepared ministry, a persecuted ministry, and a persevering ministry.
Babylon falls. Babylon, the city of man, is built on greed, exploitation, and murder, and God will judge it, and does judge it. In Revelation 18 God calls his people to come out of Babylon, and shows the world's lament over its fall, while the godly rejoice.
To be God's people is to be privileged as nobody else is. In Deuteronomy 4 we see the privilege of God's people in having his Word and his nearness, the peril of idolatry, and the promise of God's grace.
Chris came in compassion. We see in Matthew 9:18-38 the confidence of faith, the contrast between those who believe and the Pharisees, and the compassion of Christ.
Christ came that we might be forgiven. We see in Matthew 9:1-17 his confrontation with the Pharisees over the issue of forgiveness. We see the forgiveness Christ gives, the followers he calls, and the fulfilment that he brings. Do we believe in the forgiveness of sins?
Before Jordan, Moses encourages God's people that God who has been faithful to this point will be faithful to the end. We see here the hope of Christians, that Christ will bring all his people home. We see the success of God's battle, the solidarity of God's people, and submission to God's good will.…
In Revelation 17 John is shown theworst woman in the world, Babylon! What is Babylon, and what is its relevance for us? And why should we be wary, but not afraid of her?
The Lord leads his people. In Deuteronomy 2 we see how God led his people through the wilderness and to the land of Sihon, King of Heshbon. We see God's mercy, God's majesty, and God's might.
Christ challenges us. We see in Matthew 8 the deliverance he brings, the discipleship to which he call us, and the Dominion that he exercises. We see how his power challenges us to respond to him, but also how he challenges our comfort, calling us to follow him.
God is just, and his judgments are seen in the earth now, and will be full when Christ comes again. In Revelation 16 we see God's judgments depicted as seven plagues, which correspond to the seven trumpets and seven seals seen earlier in the book. The first four are God's wrath seen in nature; the fifth is God's wrath seen in the fall of empires, the sixth the preparation for the last battle, and the last is God's wrath in its fulness when Christ returns.…
Deuteronomy is the preaching of the Covenant. It begins with several chapters of history. We see the care of God for his people, the cowardice of the people in the face of challenges, and the consequences of that cowardice. And we see how Christ meets our needs by taking our sin.
Christ concludes his Sermon on the Mount by setting out the two ways, of life and death, before his hearers. He shows two attitudes, hypocrisy and faith; two ways, life and death; and two houses, the house on the rock and the house on the sand. We are to be doers of the Word, not only hearers.
Revelation 15 gives us another look into heaven. We see the victorious saints and hear their song, and we see the seven angels who will pour out the wrath of God.
The suffering Saviour has triumphed and is risen! Isaiah 52:12-53:12 shows us the Suffering Saviour, the Substitute, and the salvation he brings.
The risen Christ bears scars - the scars of his Passion. We see in John 20:19-30 the peace Christ gives, the glory of his Person, and the purpose of the Gospel. Thomas' confession of faith in the scarred Saviour is for us, that we too may confess him Lord and God.
In Revelation 14 John turns from the beasts to the Lamb, and sees the great reality that Christ is victorious and will save his people completely. He sees the Church that is faithful, and hears the warnings about the fate of evil and the blessing of those who die in the Lord. Finally he sees the last harvest; the faithful saved, and the unbelieving condemned.…
Christ is risen as he said! In Luke 24:1-12 we see the anxiety of the women at the tomb, the announcement of the angels of Christ's resurrection, and the agnosticism of the Apostles, who at first did not believe. But Christ is alive, and he is alive for us his people.
Two disciples on the road to Emmaus were met by Christ. They began in doubt and fear, he brought them to faith and peace. We see the stranger who was no stranger, the Scriptures that he opened, and the Saviour who revealed himself to his disciples.
In this Good Friday meditation we look at Isaiah 53:4-6, and dwell upon Christ's person and what he did upon the cross. The Son of God loved us and gave himself for us to save us from our sins.
Revelation 13 introduces us to the two beasts, enemies of God and his people. But who are these beasts? While they work together, and are both agents of Satan, they are distinct and work in distinct spheres. The first beast is human empire set against God; the second is false religion in concert with that evil empire.…
Psalm 69 gives us a glimpse of the inner life of Christ as shown in his great type, King David. We see the distress of the Lord, suffering, afflicted, rejected. We see the devotion of the Lord, who chose the way of the Cross and gave himself up for us, and we see the deliverance of the Lord, both his deliverance at the Resurrection and the deliverance he worked for his people.…
At his Triumphal Entry to Jerusalem, Christ shows himself as the King of Peace. We se his requisition of a donkey sowin his humanity and deity; his disciples' rejoicing; and the rejection of the Pharisees.
Ruth begins with loss and ends with blessing. The love and loyalty of God result in Ruth being redeemed, and the birth of a son. We see in Ruth 4 the challenge of redemption, the confirmation of redemption, and the child of redemption.
What is real prayer like? In the Sermon on the Mount, Christ teaches his disciples about prayer. We see Christ's teaching on God and prayer, how prayer looks upward to God, out to the world, and how we pray for ourselves as well as others.
The vulnerable widow takes refuge under the wing of the mighty redeemer. In Ruth 3 we see Ruth's relationship with Boaz move on. Naomi resolves that they will be married, Ruth requests of Boaz his grace, and Boaz reassures her and Naomi that he will act for her. An in all this we see a reminder of the story of Christ and his Church, of the better Bridegroom and greater Redeemer.…
How are we to worship? That in the great question in Matthew 6. Life and worship are one, so our worship is to be real, not an act. Prayer is to be in faith, trusting God is our Father, and so our priority is to be God himself. There are many things that lead us away, chiefly the things we worry about, and so Christ teaches us why we should not worry, but trust God and pursue his Kingdom.…
What lies behind the persecution of Christians? Revelation 12 look at the spiritual realities behind persecution: the anger and defeat of the Devil, and his wrath now that he has been cast out of heaven. It points us to God's protection, and the victory that is through Christ's blood.
God is gracious and loving, but sometimes it's hard to remember the fat when we suffer. Naomi's experience of loss left her bitter, but through a family connection she barely recalled, God showed his compassion and brought her comfort. We see in Ruth 2 the connections God makes, the compassion God shows, and the comfort h brings.…
What is the relationship between Christ and the Old Testament? He tells us that he has come to fulfil the Law and the Prophets, not to abolish them. There is therefore a continuity with them. He corrects false ideas about Scripture and righteousness, and leads us to the Christian's high calling to love our neighbours. We are called to be what we are, even as we are saved by grace.…
In Revelation 11, a chapter often misunderstood becausepeople do not take care to read Revelation as a whole, we see the Church's role as prophetic witnesses to Christ, telling forth God's Word in a hostile world. We see the last trumpet's sound, and the great judgment of God.
God is King - but what do we do when things go wrong? Naomi lost, as she thought, everything, but her experience would teach her what God is like, most of all through her daughter-in-law Ruth. We see in Ruth 1 a crisis, commitment, and challenge.
Christ opens his Semon on the Mount by speaking of the character and calling of God's people. His Beatitudes lay out Christian character, in contrast to all false ideas of virtue, and he follows them with the call to be what we are - that those who are salt should be salt, and those who are light should shine.…
Revelation 10 forms as it were a prelude to the sounding of the last trumpet. In it John has a vision of a mighty angel and a little book. The angel declares God's power, the little book is the Word God has given his church to proclaim. We see also in the seven thunders and the words John was not allowed to write that God has his secret things which are his own.…
Ezekiel ends with full salvation, God's people in God's place, in God's presence, God in the midst. It is a promise of the future, but also one that is in part fulfiled now. We see the people of God, God's place, and God's presence.
Jesus came preaching. His message was the good news of God's Kingdom that has drawn near to a lost world in him. We see in Mathew 4:12-25 the dawn of the Gospel, the disciples Christ called, and the declaration that he makes that in him the Kingdom of God is at hand.
The Seven Trumpets of Revelation are God's warnings to sinful man, sounding through history. The 5th an 6th Trumpets are demonic activity and war, deeply destructive. Yet through them God's people may know his peace. But while they sound loudly, the ungodly world hears not, and refuses to turn to God.…
All blessings flow to God's people from God's presence. In Ezekiel 47 we see the curse remove, and the grace of God flowing rich and free. We see that all God's people are saed by grace, Jew and Gentile, and that the one people of God is made up of people saved out of every nation.
Our Lord was led out by the Spirit to be tempted in the wilderness. We see in Matthew 4:1-11 how he succeeded where Israel failed. We see how he has met for us the temptations to doubt the provision of God, the providence of God, and the power of God. He is not only our example, but our champion and our King.…
God is working out his purposes in history. In Revelation 8 we reach the end of the first cycle, the Seals, and before embarking on the second, the Trumpets, we see the value of prayer. Then the Trumpets, the warnings of God's wrath, begin with the curse on nature graphically depicted in striking symbols.…
The Church worships. We see in Ezekiel 46 the pattern of worship, the propitiation at the heart of worship, and the participation of God's people in worship. We see how these themes are reflected in the worship of the Church today.
Before Christ entered on his public ministry, John the Baptist came ashis herald. John called people to prepare for Christ's coming with repentance. He warned the hypocrites, and spoke of the crisis to come when Christ appeared. In Matthew 3 we see the man, his message, and the Messiah.
