1 Sponsorship Pros and Cons, Structuring Your Patreon and What Podcasters Should Do When They Reach Milestones With Jimmie Whisman [Part 2] 48:12
Last week's episode was left on a bit of a cliffhanger when I started asking Jimmie Whisman about sponsorship pros and cons. This week, Jimmie shares insight into the pros and cons of podcast sponsorships and what podcasters need to be aware of. This conversation is a nice setup to the following topics that we discuss: When you should start a Patreon account. What Patreon tier structuring looks like along with the bonus content. Whether cross-pollinating your podcast is as effective as you hear it be. How live podcast opportunities present themselves and what to expect from a live audience. Jimmie's take on sound quality. What podcasters should do when they reach milestones in their podcast. I hope you are able to learn something from Jimmie's experience from creating a successful podcast. 5 years ago, Jimmie Whisman and James Pietragallo made the decision to create a true crime podcast called Crime in Sports. With a crude setup in an apartment in Phoenix, Arizona, the comedic duo recorded their first podcast with two lapel microphones and a video camera to capture the audio. Once that first episode was complete, they uploaded it and only got 12 total downloads. Disappointed in the downloads, James was ready to call it quits before Jimmie reminded him that it was only one episode and they had to give the podcast some time to grow. Fast-forward 5 years later and the comedic duo now host an additional podcast, Small Town Murder and tour the United States doing live podcast recordings for thousands of adoring fans. How did these two get here? In this episode, Jimmie shares how he and his partner grew their podcast to garner thousands of downloads per week and now are the creators of their own fate and future. What you'll learn from this episode: The early days of building Crime In Sports. How they build content for their podcast. Whether their audience likes longer or shorter podcasts. What it takes to create a successful podcast. How to deal with life's interruptions How he and Jimmie earn their money and and handle sponsorships. Their Patreon tier structure methodology. The impact of pollinating your audience. and much more... Getting more podcast listeners is a HUGE topic for most podcasters. Am I right? But when it comes to getting more podcast listeners, what is the right way to market those podcasts? In today's episode, I want to examine the different types of podcast marketing and help you identify which ones will work best for you. Today's podcast was inspired after I attended a recent Clubhouse room filled with podcast creators who seemed to be caught up in the the throes of knowing which would be the best way to market their podcast to get more listeners. Here's a summary of what you're going to learn in today's episode: UPDATED APPLE PODCASTS NEWS - A change to the "Subscribe" button and how it will impact podcast content creators. How social platforms are also pivoting the language of how people can "subscribe" or "follow" their favorite content creator and its direct relation to benefit the content creator. Google Podcasts is making an update to their app to help podcasters get better recommendations. This impacts the podcast content creator and I talk about what you should do about this change. The identification of the 4 types of podcast marketing: Organic Search Engine Optimization Influencer Marketing Podcast-To-Podcast Marketing Paid Marketing on social media and podcast platforms such as Spotify--what do you need to know? Brand new live streaming app that allows you to distribute your live stream to Facebook Live, YouTube Live, LinkedIn Live and Periscope while allowing viewers to "call in" and take live audio/video calls. Podcast marketing can be an enigma for content creators who have a purpose. Let's face it, getting the word out about your podcast can seem like an uphill battle the entire time you're creating the podcast. After all, there isn't a one-size-fits-all strategy that comes with promoting a podcast program. In today's episode, I want to share with you a strategy I have been using for years that helps grow an audience of qualified listeners who are interested in what you have to say. I am a firm believer that every podcaster should implement this strategy right out of the gate. I share this strategy with you because it's how you came to probably finding my podcast, YouTube channel or even viewing one of my free or paid products. Every podcaster will have an end game--the question is whether you want to step outside of your comfort zone of recording and editing and move into an area that will help add content to your recordings while promoting your podcast. Also in today's episode: How did the podcasting industry perform as a whole in 2020? I break down some interesting numbers from Edison Research's webinar, 10 for 20. Answer listener and YouTube viewer questions. We will talk about how to cite sources in a podcast as well as determine how to podcast in two different niches. Have a question for me? In today's episode, I want to talk with you about creating better podcast artwork by building a new graphic design skillset. As podcasters, we go into the industry thinking that it's all about the equipment, the audio editing software and post-production. But what no one really tells us is that it's important to start building your skillsets from the start if you don't already possess them. In today's episode I am going to break down for you the value of learning a skillset like basic graphic design. You're going to hear me talk about the different Softwares as a Service products (SaaS) and which one might work for you. This is today's podcast breakdown: How podcasters will use graphic design How podcasters use graphic design to get more listeners Why podcasters use graphic design for their website Why graphic design is basically married to promoting other elements of your podcast like merchandise Why graphic design is super beneficial for your video podcasts How I got involved in graphic design and I define my catalyst for becoming better at creating graphics. When you start podcasting, you'll have a number of questions when it comes to recording and editing your podcast into a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). There are a number of DAWs that exist in the marketplace and I want to cover the top 3 that you might be using for your podcast. I will break down, in-depth, each of those DAWs and recommend the one that is going to save you time if you are implementing the right workflow. In my 21 years of radio, there is only one software that I use to edit any of the audio that I create for radio. This has carried over into my podcast production for clients as well. Today I want to share why I use this particular recording/editing software and why you should be using it as well. Have a question for me? "Should I put my podcast up on YouTube? I hear it's great for getting discovered." I frequently hear this comment from podcasters who are looking to gain more listeners to their podcast. But truth be told, posting a podcast up to YouTube is more than just grabbing the audio file, attaching podcast cover art and letting your podcast play underneath the card. In fact, when it comes to gaining more traction to your podcast, putting audio-only podcasts up on YouTube could be wasting valuable time for you, the podcaster. In fact, your time is better spent creating original content for the YouTube platform that is an actual video instead of repurposed static images. Here's a breakdown of what is in today's program: Show Opening and Latest News: An update on Clubhouse and the evolution of their Terms of Service. If you missed that episode, you can listen to it here . Spotify launches paid podcast platform for creators I explain how you can implement a paid subscription podcast right now without having to wait for Spotify's platform to go public. I detail which platforms you can use to create a paid podcast platform. The platform that seems most promising is Supercast. You can learn more about them here. Recalibrating your podcast efforts when you can't publish for a week is something that might happen to you and your podcast. In the case of today's podcast, you will learn exactly what I did this last weekend to recalibrate the efforts of my podcast, website and YouTube channel. In those instances, I feel that it might be important for you to think about batching OR actually taking a break. You will learn in today's podcast what ended up happening to me and what I decided to do about something that could be viewed as a setback. It's short one today, but I hope you enjoy it. 1 Sponsorship Strategies From Radio That Can Help Podcasters Who Want To Monetize featuring Steve Moynihan 56:14
Sponsorship strategies from radio--that can ultimately help podcasters who want to monetize--can help when it comes to approaching a potential new sponsor. Today I speak with Account Executive for Hubbard Broadcasting-Phoenix, Steve Moynihan. Steve has extensive experience in radio industry sales since the early 2000s and also a digital media consultant. His wisdom and experience in traditional media is like hitting the jackpot for podcasters who need answers to the countless questions about sponsorships. There is no doubt that you will get an inside look to how radio stations acquire business for the company, but how these strategies can apply to podcasters who are constantly on the hunt to monetize their program. Today's episode will hopefully give you some ideas of how you can monetize your podcast. Here's a brief breakdown of today's interview: What a "sponsorship" means in radio. The easiest way to get a sponsorship fr your podcast. Where sponsorships can be integrated for your program. Which metrics radio focus on for sponsorships and which metrics matter for podcasters. Steve's process for creating a proposal for a potential new sponsor. Why making mistakes in sponsorship deals are super valuable. As I mentioned in today's episode, you can connect with him via LinkedIn if you have questions about sponsorships: Connect with Steve on LinkedIn right here. ==================== Have a question for me? Clubhouse for podcasters has become quite the topic of conversation in the last few months. Already, the app is gaining steam with those who have an iPhone and it's creating even more curiosity with those who are on Android. But when it comes to podcasters, there has been buzz about utilizing the platform as a "podcasting" outlet for live audio streams. But the big question is whether or not you can create live content on the platform and whether or not you can repurpose it as podcast content on your hosting provider. In today's episode, we are going to go over: Clubhouse's terms of service and how it affects podcast content creation. Clubhouse's competitors and why it matters to content creators. Monetizing on Clubhouse. Whether a podcaster can create live content and repurpose it onto podcast platforms--killing two birds with one stone. Defining how Clubhouse should be used as a social network. The potential of Clubhouse being more than just a social network and whether it could possibly survive as a potential "live broadcasting" tool in the future. There are a lot of questions to be answered in this episode. I hope it helps out. ==================== Have a question for me? A big thanks to the guys from Writer and Geek for sharing their story on my podcast. Then a little later we will dive into the following: My YouTube channel and some updates going on with me over there. And update on my previous How much time you're spending to produce your podcast Google Podcasts supports private RSS feeds and more... Becoming the trailblazer of your podcasting niche can seem impossible when there are so many other podcasters who are creating content like yours. It can feel discouraging to hear podcasts that share valuable information whilst creating an audio production that sounds top-not. But this wasn't the case for the creators of the Writer and Geek podcast . Self-proclaimed "geeks", Vishnu and Shankar Padmanabhan, had their sights set on creating content only they thought they loved. Little did they know, the content they would produce would resonate with a global audience and become one of the trailblazing podcasts in India. In today's episode, I wanted to learn more about those "first days" of the Writer and Geek podcast and uncover the genesis of the idea. We will break down: The podcasting tools they use to create a documentary-style podcast Why investing in your equipment pays off in the long run for your program. What they have gained by focusing on their content and what it has done for acquired skills they never learned they would gain. How to tell a story and maintain credibility. How they gain ideas and inspiration to create thoughtful content. How being an "introvert" allowed them to gain much more beyond their podcast. The emergence of their podcast paired with a few other native podcasts led to the explosion of interest in podcasting for India. Enjoy today's episode! ==================== Have a question for me? In this episode, I am answering questions that have been submitted to me via voicemail, email or questions through my YouTube channel. If you have a question for me, leave me a voicemail or send me a message at: http://www.thepodcasttherapist.com/ . Scroll down to the Contact Me section of the page and you can leave a message there. There's a strategic reason behind this and it's something that you should consider whether you are a creating a podcast that is educational or filled with entertainment value. Today I will discuss: How to move your podcast off Anchor.fm if you are finding that you are not getting the service you deserve from Anchor. Whether or not you should start a podcast or a blog if you think the niche is too small. Give a brief history lesson on why podcast hosting service providers became businesses and how podcasters syndicated their program for people to listen. This lesson shares the key behind why you don't want to host your audio on your website. I hope you enjoy today's episode. Amanda Valentine is a former Cincinnati radio show host-turned-podcaster. Her podcast, Pound This , is a health and nutrition podcast that seeks to inform and inspire those who are finding exercise and nutrition a challenge. While Amanda is accomplished as a radio show host, never in her wildest dreams did she imagine that her podcast would have the positive impact it has had with her listeners--which had given a return on the investment in time and money. In today's podcast, I sit down with Amanda as we discuss: How and why she started her podcast. The pros and cons of releasing a podcast once a week or 5 days a week. Uncovering the one thing that is holding you and your podcast back from being successful. Lessons from radio that translate to podcasting. Whether or not you should create an unintentionally bad episode and release it. Thoughts on audiograms and whether or not they give your podcast the boost it needs. Why your podcast is entrepreneurship. Enjoy the episode today. I hope it inspires you to build upon what you are creating or opens up doors that you thought were always going to be closed. This follow-up episode takes a deeper dive into the TSL statistic I mentioned in the previous episode. I recommend listening to the previous episode before you dive into this episode to get the full scope of what I'm talking about in this episode. But if you've already listened to last episode, here's a breakdown of what will be covered in this episode: A recap of last episode and some notes on how to absorb my podcast. What to expect when you are implementing my instructions in all my episodes. Picking back up with the ACQUISITION portion of a sales funnel and defining what an acquisition looks like. Identifying what "acquisition" looks like in real life and how it applies to you as the customer and the podcaster. I will give you a plan of action to start thinking about what you can create to acquire new listeners. How to utilize the assets you create or obtain to create auditory markers within your podcast to know how someone has listened. The ADVANCED marketing technique that podcasters MUST implement in order to turn a listener into a listening customer. Why advertising your podcast on platforms like Facebook or Instagram is worth it for you and your listeners. Enjoy today's episode and if you have any questions, use the link below to leave a voicemail or email. I'm happy to answer and help you out in a future episode. ==================== Have a question for me? Which podcasting statistic is the most important one to measure? Today I'm going to go over some statistics that aren't really mentioned within your hosting provider platform. Instead, I'm going to be diving into two platforms that share statistics to help you create better content for your audience. But I'm going to take it a step further in this episode. In this episode I'm going to correlate what your podcast metrics will mean for the growth of your podcast and how they have a direct impact on the actions that your listeners will make. At the end of the day, are you creating podcast content just to create it for downloads or are you creating podcast content that is going to turn a listener into a valuable listeners who is going to actually pay for something that you offer. Today I share with you the first part of which metrics matter and dive deeper into the concepts that work best for me. Be on the lookout for the continuation of this episode in my Thursday special edition. ==================== Have a question for me? 1 This Consultation Call Fundamentally Changed One Podcaster's Way At How He Looks At Podcast and Website 23:35
Today's episode is based on a consultation call that fundamentally changed the way Jon Verno looked at the purpose of his podcast website. Recorded on December 24th, 2020, this consultation call was over an hour long--and with Jon's permission I am able to share part of that consultation call with you here on this podcast. Jon reached out to me to learn more about Electronic Press Kits (EPK) so that he could have people view it on his website for potential opportunities. After speaking with me, he learned that a podcast website is more than jut having a static page to refer people to when looking for opportunity. You're going to hear me refer to a website, http://www.balancedbites.com, and share which qualities of that podcast website are ideal for Jon's podcast. This episode is perfect for the podcaster who is having a hard time growing their podcast as or have possibly plateaued. Have a question for me? 1 Podcast Like A Pro: How to Effectively Communicate Like a Professional Broadcaster with Mac Watson 53:04
Sometimes it feels like you just can't seem to get the words out the right way on your podcast. After you've recorded, you feel like you said something stupid or you just didn't communicate it very well. Today I talk with another radio friend of mine, Mac Watson, of the Mac Watson Talks Podcast (http://www.macwatsononline.com). Mac has just as many years in the radio industry as I do, but he's done a fair majority in talk radio. In this episode, you're going to learn: How Mac built his current podcast audience. The key differences Mac noticed between radio and podcasting. How to learn communication skills for podcasting. What podcasters can do to relate to an audience. The secret behind scripting a podcast and when you should really use it. A brief understanding of Mac's monetization model. As always, when you listen to today's episode, give it a listen and try to take notes if you are able to. This is the best way to really grasp some of the concepts mentioned. ======================== Have a question for me? What can podcasters learn from radio broadcasters? Today I sit down with the "Digital Dot Connector", Seth Resler of Jacobs Media and he is going to share with us the correlations of radio broadcasting to podcasting and how it might impact you and your podcast. In today's interview we will talk about: Revenue conversion and what it means for podcasters and what you can learn from radio broadcasters as they have faced revenue challenges. Understanding how numbers work and the metrics that matter most for your podcast. How to not feel overwhelmed when you are producing a podcast for audio and for web. How to find your aesthetic feel for your podcast. The first 30 seconds of your podcast and what it does for your listener retention. Local podcasts and whether they are worth creating. How radio broadcasters differ from podcasters when it comes to broadening/narrowing content to acquire an audience. There is so much packed into this episode that it's impossible to put it all in the show notes. One recommendation that I do have is that you listen to this podcast, then listen again while taking notes. If you would like to learn more about Seth or chat with him, find him over on Jacobs Media's website at http://www.jacobsmedia.com. =================================== Have a question for me? "What is your money truth?" This is a quote from today's podcast guest and Money Mindset coach, Karmen Reed. Now that we are inside of 2021, I feel it's important that we dive a little deeper into where you would like to see your podcast going for the next 6 to 12 months. Having the right mindset is all about growing personally, professionally and financially. In my conversation today with Karmen, we explore these key points when it comes to shifting your mindset for your podcast as it relates to taking it to the next level: How clear you are with your podcast's vision. What is the money story that was taught to you and how can you reframe what you think about money? How to identify boundaries that will help shift you and your podcast into a better place. The POWER of consistency and how it affects aspects of your podcast and how you can see that income with your podcast. Why investing in events like networking or conferences can help lift up your podcast. How much attention should you be giving to your money situation. The power of gratitude. Let's talk about the 9 podcasting lessons I learned in 2020 and how they can help you and your program into the new year. The start of the new year brings in a fresh crop of podcasters who have high hopes to create a wildly successful podcast. Some of those podcasters will survive through the new year with content each week while other podcasters will find themselves burned out--eventually giving up and telling themselves they failed at their podcast. This episode serves as a foundational episode that has an emphasis on starting with taking care of yourself. I do realize this is a podcast about helping other podcasters with the technical and promotional parts of the medium, but until we can start working on these basic and fundamental parts of our own personal lives, we may never see our podcasts see the heights that we dream of.
