Urbanistica Podcast - Cities for People

Journalist and author Chris Berdik joins to discuss his new book CLAMOR: How Noise Took Over the World – and How We Can Take It Back , a powerful investigation into how everyday noise has become a public health crisis—and what cities can do about it. Berdik unpacks why noise is more than just loudness, explaining how rhythm, frequency, and context all shape our experience of sound. He explores how neuroscience, design, and policy can work together to create healthier urban soundscapes, and why outdated decibel-based regulations aren’t enough. From Berlin to Detroit, he highlights cities using data, community input, and innovative planning to reduce noise and increase well-being. __ Keep Up the Good Work. __ Keep Up the Good Work. Albert Edman, Leader for Cities in Transition and Internationalisation Strategist at Viable Cities, as well as RISE North Sweden Coordinator. Together, we dive deep into how Swedish cities are working towards climate neutrality and how this links to the broader vision of the New European Bauhaus (NEB). We begin by unpacking Viable Cities: its mission, the cities involved, and how it operates within Sweden. Albert walks us through the full journey from the first contact with a municipality to actual, on-the-ground transformation sharing concrete examples of projects and methods used along the way. We then explore the New European Bauhaus, a bold EU initiative bridging the worlds of sustainability, inclusion, and aesthetics. Albert shares insights on how NEB has influenced local projects in Sweden, how it helps integrate cultural and social values into urban transformations, and how these dimensions connect to energy systems, mobility, and other technical aspects. __ Keep Up the Good Work. We dive into PREFIGURE, an EU-funded research project exploring the intersection of housing inequality and energy poverty across seven European countries. Running from 2024 to 2027, PREFIGURE aims to reimagine how we create fairer, more sustainable cities through innovation, community knowledge, and just transitions. Joining us are Dr. Defne Kadioglu, researcher at Malmö University’s Institute for Urban Research, and Kalina Tcolova, analyst at the Center for the Study of Democracy in Bulgaria. Together, they share the inspiration behind the project, how it’s implemented through a unique blend of quantitative and qualitative methods, and what role the MobiLab – a mobile urban living lab – plays in co-creating solutions with local communities. We explore case studies from Scandinavia and Bulgaria, unpack what a "just energy transition" really means in practice, and discuss how social, policy, and market innovations can become real-life "prototypes of change" in cities across Europe. __ Keep Up the Good Work. I speak with Lars Marcus, Professor in Urban Design at Chalmers University of Technology and Fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, about his latest book, Measures and Meanings of Spatial Capital. We discuss the concept of spatial capital—how the built environment functions as a form of capital that can enhance social, economic, and ecological resilience if designed with intention. Lars explains why spatial form is crucial in shaping urban systems and how planners, designers, and policymakers can apply these ideas in practice to address today’s global challenges. We also explore why cities continue to repeat the same planning mistakes despite decades of research, and what needs to change for us to truly learn from the past. Finally, Lars shares his thoughts on what’s next for him and where his research is headed in 2025. Join us for a thought-provoking discussion on rethinking urban design and the power of spatial capital.
