Dave and part-time co-host Mitchell Salazar return to break down all the highs, lows, and critical storylines from stop No. 8 on the Championship Tour—the 2025 Lexus Trestles Pro Presented by Outerknown. Dave and Mitch dive into the biggest Winners & Losers of the event—highlighting breakout performances from rookie Joel Vaughan and wildcard Sawyer Lindblad, while calling out disappointing exits from Gabriela Bryan, Jordy Smith, and a clunky Elimination Round heat between Barron Mamiya and Kelly Slater. They also celebrate a historic weekend for …Lost Surfboards, who saw both event champs riding their boards, along with a dominant showing in the Vissla CT Shaper Rankings. 1 EP 235: Tatiana Weston-Webb – Will she return to competitive surfing?, Being a World Title-contender, Rediscovering her love for surfing off tour, Scott Smith & John De Temple appearance, Honoring… 48:56
Tatiana Weston-Webb returns to The Lineup to unpack her journey around the world and celebrate her latest film with the late, great Greg Browning. Recorded in New Jersey fresh off a Mentawais boat trip, Tati reflects on stepping away from full-time competition after two Olympic cycles and rediscovering her love of surfing away from the pressure of the jersey. She speaks candidly about her mindset on and off tour, knowing she is a World Title contender at her best, and the surreal joy of scoring perfect Kandui with her husband. She is later joined by producers Scott Smith and John De Temple to celebrate the premiere of their deeply personal and visually stunning new film with the indelible Greg Browning– A Marble in the Jar . The crew dive into the genesis of the film—a project that began with Greg’s vision and passion. With a treasure trove of footage spanning years, the team recounts the wild, creative ride of making the movie, from smashing jars of marbles in Scott’s backyard to experimenting with four different intros, all in pursuit of honoring Greg’s dream. They reflect on the unguarded, fearless spirit that defined both Greg and Tatiana, and how the bond they shared helped shape the emotional core of the project. As Scott poignantly shares, “Greg knew his time was short, but he was 100% behind it all—he went full director mode.” From Instagram fan questions to lightning-round favorites, Tati closes with a powerful reminder to “focus on the small wins throughout the day–aka–a marble in the jar.” We love you Greg! Dave is joined once again by part-time co-host and WSL commentator Mitch Salazar to break down all the drama, triumph, and heartbreak from Stop No. 7 of the 2025 Championship Tour—the Western Australia Margaret River Pro. With Jordy Smith and Gabriela Bryan each securing their second wins of the season, both now sit atop the rankings and inch closer to their first World Titles. Dave and Mitch go deep on the event’s biggest winners and most surprising losers—from Lakey Peterson’s clutch performance to save her season, to the top 5 men faltering at a crucial stretch of the calendar, to a sobering mid-season cut for Channel Islands’ stacked roster. The duo also takes stock of the updated Vissla CT Shaper Rankings, highlighting which board builders are leading the charge and which brands are left regrouping post-Margarets. They answer burning fan questions (Is power surfing the key to a world title?) and give updates on the wildly competitive Lineup Fantasy League. Follow Mitch here . In this deep and unfiltered conversation, Kanoa Igarashi joins The Lineup fresh off the Western Margaret River Pro—ranked fourth in the world and hungrier for the World Title than ever. We kick things off with Kanoa’s take on The Box, one of the heaviest slabs to return to the tour since 2019, where it’s either twos or tens, and every drop could be your ticket to glory—or a slam on the reef. He breaks down the difference between his Main Break and Box quivers, gets into the nuance of board design with JS, and reflects on how his surfing instincts have sharpened through the years. Kanoa opens up about the evolution of his mindset—what it was like competing against one of his surfing idols in Julian Wilson, how his 2022 Top 5 finish left him feeling like he had more to prove, and why he believes his real title window is just beginning. He gets candid about overcoming imposter syndrome, dialing in every 1% of his game, and finally feeling like he's built the complete package. We dive into the Olympic effect—from the pressure cooker of the build up and competing at Tokyo Olympic Games to the emotional release of finally holding that medal. Kanoa compares notes with fellow Olympians like Noah Lyles, shares how surfing changed his life on and off the world stage, and reflects on the balance between fame, authenticity, and his roots in the Quiksilver Young Guns program. He discusses how people like Stephen ‘Belly’ Bell helped shape his outlook as a growing professional surfer, talks partnerships, the importance of supportive brands throughout his career, and walks us through his decision to sign with Neutrogena as one of their first surf ambassadors. We wrap with a look ahead to Trestles and the huge change to the 2026 Tour Schedule and format. Kanoa touches on training, strategy, and the importance of feeling at home during comps. In this special collaboration episode between The Lineup and The Double-Up Podcast, Dave and Double-Up hosts Rachael Tilly and Shannon Hughes dive into the evolution of women’s surfing. From its scrappy QS days to the world-class performances we’re witnessing today, the women’s tour has undergone massive transformations, shifting locations, raising the stakes, and proving that when given the right waves, female surfers rise to the occasion. The hosts discuss how media coverage has shaped the sport, the importance of storytelling in keeping women’s surfing at the forefront, and the growing depth of talent across generations. We take a close look at Caity Simmers and the conversation around her influence and whether she is the most important surfer in the world right now. The discussion also covers the ever-intensifying world title race, the evolution of rivalries, and whether younger surfers are truly pushing out the veterans or simply forcing them to elevate their game. Beyond competition, we examine the broader sustainability of professional surfing as a career for women. With more opportunities than ever, is the path to a long-term career in the sport finally viable? As the industry shifts, what role does the surf community play in ensuring continued progress? From Pipeline’s proving grounds to the new generation redefining the sport, this episode is packed with insight, passion, and a raw look at where women’s surfing stands today. Legendary surfer, filmmaker, and environmental advocate Chris Malloy joins us on The Lineup. Known for his no-nonsense attitude and deep connection to the land, Chris dives into what it truly means to live authentically and reconnect with nature. He shares his views on modern conservation efforts, the surf film industry, and what it was like to watch legends like Tom Curren at Rincon in the early days. From hammering nails, cutting wood and driving tractors to fund his surf trips to taking a leap with Patagonia, Chris recounts how stepping away from big sponsorship deals was met with skepticism but ultimately led to a fulfilling path of making purpose-driven films. He offers an inside look at the surfing world before the internet, when curiosity was the fuel for adventure. Chris looks back at his upbringing, moving from Los Angeles to Ojai in the late '70s—a place he describes was filled with hippies, cowboys, and the Hell’s Angels. He reminisces about the early surf trips to the North Shore, scraping by with couch surfing and car camping. Recounting stories of Pipeline, Teahupo’o, and the Mentawais, he paints a picture of an era when surfing’s greats carved out a living on the waves and off the grid. Chris also reflects on the changing surf culture, the “passing of the torch,” and how while the younger generation’s progression may be incredible, he worries they may be missing out on the raw, unfiltered experience that shaped his own career. Chris continues by discussing the evolution of his filmmaking journey, from his early appearances in Taylor Steele’s films to creating impactful surf documentaries with his brothers. He discusses his partnership with YETI and their shared ethos of practicality and purpose. He shares how YETI gear became a staple on his ranch, highlighting the importance of quality tools that allow you to do what you love just a little longer. 1 EP 215: Dr. Chad Nelsen - Celebrating Surfrider’s 40th anniversary, Life as CEO, Protecting our oceans and tackling coastal erosion, Partnering with WSL and WSL PURE, Living an ‘examined life,’ and… 58:02
Dr. Chad Nelsen, CEO of the Surfrider Foundation, joins us on The Lineup to discuss his role in protecting the world’s oceans, waves, and beaches. From Surfrider’s hometown of Laguna Beach, Dr. Nelsen shares insights on the foundation’s 40th anniversary, their network of 200+ chapters, and the complex evolution of environmental activism. We dive into real-world challenges—mangrove deforestation in Puerto Rico and coastal erosion on Hawaii’s North Shore—and discuss how the Surfrider Foundation combines legal and scientific strategies to tackle these issues. Dr. Nelsen also opens up about his journey, from growing up in a surfing family on Long Island to his lifelong commitment to ocean conservation. He reflects on the impact of climate change on coastlines and the need for public action, urging listeners to get involved in the fight for sustainable practices. We explore how surfing, though a niche sport, can drive environmental awareness and political influence. A key example is the Save Trestles campaign, which successfully halted plans for a six-lane toll road that would have cut through San Onofre State Beach, the Donna O'Neill Land Conservancy, sacred Native American sites, and threatened the San Mateo Creek Watershed. With partnerships with local communities, WSL and WSL PURE, as well as ambassadors like Carissa Moore, Dr. Cliff Kapono, and Greg Long, the Surfrider Foundation strives to inspire both surfers and non-surfers alike to make a difference. Dryrobe ambassadors, longboard title-contender and shaper of Skindog Surfboards Ben Skinner, and his son, QS campaigner, up-and-coming surfer, and 2023’s Rip Curl Grom Search International Champion Lukas Skinner join us on the podcast. Calling in from France and fresh from Lukas’ win at the Caraïbos Surf de Nuit Anglet presented by Rip Curl, the father and son surfing team discuss Lukas’ first proper year on the QS, their mentality towards his long road to qualification, and him being the first British male to win a Boardmasters event. Ben discusses shaping surfboards for himself and for Lukas with Skindog Surfboards, the support system they have around them, and Lukas making it a goal to get Skindog Surfboards on the Vissla CT Shaper Rankings. They rewind the clock on their upbringing, Ben being born in the island of Jersey, being a high-performing shortboarder at a young age, before switching to longboarding and winning every category in every major British longboard event by age 18. After Ben reveals how he used to keep warm in between sessions in the water by jumping into a warm bucket of water, they share how game changing it is having dryrobe as a sponsor, especially living in an area that can get so cold. Ben and Lukas look ahead to the Abu Dhabi Longboard Classic Presented By Modon, Ben’s excitement to compete in Abu Dhabi, and the unique challenges of competing in a wave pool. Lukas shares his excitement to compete in the Rip Curl Pro Anglet while in France and competing in his last pro Junior of the year. They wrap up the podcast by answering listener questions, explain why jam is always first on an English scone, and take turns quick-answering the Lightning Round.
