On March 26th, 1997, the morning after the Hartford Whalers lost to the Colorado Avalanche at the Hartford Civic Center, news broke that the Whalers were on the move. Owner Peter Karmanos had decided that Hartford, CT was no longer viable, economically. However, it would be six weeks before Raleigh, NC was announced as the new home. The Hurricanes didn't have a 1st round pick. But, that doesn't mean they weren't one of the teams everyone was talking about at the draft last week. They dealt Tony DeAngelo to the Flyers for a trio of draft picks and then they went out and selected a fist full of Russian players. We'll talk roster and then get a breakdown of the draft class with Mark Seidel of North American Central Scouting. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices…

It was all going so well late in the 2nd period. The Carolina Hurricanes held a 2-1 lead on the strength of Brett Pesce and Jordan Staal goals. But, then the penalty parade started and the Canes could not survive. The Bruins tallied once late in the 2nd to even the score. Then picked up another at 5-on-3 early in the 3rd to take the lead. Brad Marchand scored that go-ahead goal and had a 5-point night as the series shifts back to Raleigh tied 2-2. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices…

Charlie Coyle's shorthanded goal in the first period sparked the Boston Bruins to a 4-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 3. David Pastrnak and Taylor Hall each scored power play goals as the Bruins dominated the special teams battle in trimming Carolina's lead to 2-1 in the best-of-seven series. Vincent Trocheck and Jaccob Slavin each had goals for the Hurricanes who started rookie Pyotr Kochetkov in goal. Game 4 is Sunday afternoon at 12:30. Learn more about your ad choices. The Bruins tried to rattle the Hurricanes' cage in Game 2. Early in the 1st period David Pastrnak skated into Antti Raanta, injuring the Carolina goalie. But, that just got the Canes angry. The response? A 5-2 win and a 2-0 series lead. Jesper Fast broke the ice with his first goal of the playoffs. Sebastian Aho and Nino Niederreiter each scored twice and Tony DeAngelo and Jaccob Slavin combined for 5 assists as the Canes take a 2-0 series lead to Boston for Games 3 (Friday) and 4 (Sunday). We'll see if there's a Game 5. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices…

Antti Raanta held the Bruins at bay for the first 36 minutes, then Carolina's offense took over in a 5-1 win to take Game 1 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. Seth Jarvis broke the ice with 3 1/2 minutes left in the second period, His redirect of Jaccob Slavin's point drive found its way through Linus Ullmark staking the Hurricanes to a 1-0 lead. Nino Niederreiter made it 2-0 1:50 later and the Canes would score 3 more times in the third period. Raanta made 35 saves in his first career playoff start. His second should come on Wednesday at PNC Arena. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices…

Vincent Trocheck, Jordan Martinook, Teuvo Teravainen and Sebastian Aho each scored in the win. The Canes will close out the regular season on Thursday night at home against the Devils. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices…

The Carolina Hurricanes beat the New York Islanders Sunday, running their winning streak to four games and opening up a 4-point lead in the Metropolitan Division. However, not all the news is good as they also lost goaltender Antti Raanta to an injury in the 2nd period. While Pyotr Kochetkov played well, winning for the second straight time, he might have to be the starting goaltender when the Hurricanes open up their Stanley Cup playoff run. Max Domi netted the game-winner, and Seth Jarvis scored for the 9th time in his last 19 games. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices…

After the first 38 minutes, the Hurricanes were down 2-0. But, Teuvo Teravainen's late second period power play goal ignited a 4-goal rally as the Canes beat Winnipeg, 4-2, at PNC Arena. Carolin keeps pace with the Rangers who beat the Islanders Thursday night. By winning, Carolina clinches home ice advantage in the opening round of the playoffs as the Penguins are 9 points behind the Hurricanes with just four games left. With Jordan Staal sitting out the game against Arizona, Max Domi filled in and picked up where Jordan left off. The newcomer filled Staal's spot centering Nino Niederreiter and Jesper Fast and that line combined for 3 goals and a pair of assists in the win. Domi's tally made it 3-0 in the second period. It was his first with the Hurricanes and the 100th of his career. Vincent Trocheck scored his 20th of the season, the 4th time he's done that in his career.. Sebastian Aho scored his 36th goal of the season, 2 shy of his career high to close out the scoring and help along Antti Raanta to his 13th win of the year. The Hurricanes will fly back to Raleigh on Tuesday, practice Wednesday, and then prepare to take on the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday at PNC Arena. Learn more about your ad choices. The Hurricanes fell behind 4-0 22 minutes into their game with Colorado. However, behind a pair of second period goals from Jordan Staal, the Canes actually made a game of it before falling, 7-4. Bigger than the loss and the 7 goals allowed, however, were late 3rd period injuries to Andersen (lower body) and the Captain. As good as Freddie has been all year, if Staal has to miss significant time, the offseason will arrive far sooner than anyone wanted. Carolina is off tomorrow before skating in Arizona on Monday against the Coyotes. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices…

Alex Nedeljkovic made 46 saves as the Red Wings beat the Hurricanes, 3-0, at PNC Arena. Carolina's lead in the Metropolitan Division is trimmed to 2 points over the Rangers who will host Detroit on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Canes will try and get back to winning in Denver against the potent Colorado Avalanche that evening. The Canes beat the Avs, 2-0 last month. Learn more about your ad choices. The Hurricanes yielded the first goal in their showdown with the Rangers. But, they scored the next three and now 4 points separate Carolina and New York atop the Metropolitan Division standings with 8 games to play. Andrei Svechnikov, Seth Jarvis, Jordan Staal and Sebastian Aho each scored. Aho added a pair of assists, including the primary helper on Jarvis' 14th goal of the year as the Canes took round 3 of this 4-round bout with the Rangers. They'll be back at Madison Square Garden for the penultimate game of the regular season hoping that it won't matter to playoff seeding. Freddie Andersen was very good and the Carolina penalty kill was 4 for 4 against the 2nd best power play in the NHL. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices…

The Carolina Hurricanes needed a bounce-back effort after Friday's loss to the Islanders. And, they could use some confidence heading into Tuesday's Metro showdown with the Rangers in New York. Jordan Staal, saw to it that those goals would be met. The Captain scored three times, ringing up his first hat trick in almost 10 years -- and the first for the Hurricanes this season -- in a 5-2 win over the Ducks. The Canes head to Madison Square Garden with a 2-point lead over the Rangers with 9 games left to play. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices…

Carolina wasn't good enough to beat the Islanders. But, they were less than 20 seconds from sneaking out at least one point after Vincent Trocheck's 19th goal of the season tied the game at 1-1 with 56.8 seconds to play. But, Kyle Palmieri won a battle behind the net and beat Frederik Andersen up high giving New York a 2-1 win. The Canes host the Ducks on Sunday as they try to maintain a division lead over the Rangers. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices…
