Why do so many of us get nervous when public speaking? Communication expert Lawrence Bernstein says the key to dealing with the pressure is as simple as having a casual chat. He introduces the "coffee shop test" as a way to help you overcome nerves, connect with your audience and deliver a message that truly resonates. After the talk, Modupe explains a similar approach in academia called the "Grandma test," and how public speaking can be as simple as a conversation with grandma. ×Send us a text As Mercyhurst University makes its ambitious leap into NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse, one name to watch between the pipes is sophomore goalie Jaret Jawor . A native of Lockport, Illinois, Jawor played his high school lacrosse at Wheaton Academy, where he developed into a strong and athletic netminder. Now standing at 6-foot-3, Jawor brings size, reach, and a calming presence to the crease—traits that are quickly turning heads in his second collegiate season. Jawor made his college debut in 2024, seeing time in six games as a freshman. He made 21 saves while posting a 6.95 goals-against average and an impressive .618 save percentage, finishing the season with a 1–0 record. His early showings hinted at potential, and in 2025, that potential has started to materialize. This season, Jawor has stepped into a more active role, appearing in five games and making one start. Across 143 minutes of action, he's registered: 38 saves 36 goals against 15.06 GAA .514 save percentage 1–1 overall record But the numbers only tell part of the story. In NEC conference play, Jawor has stepped up under pressure, delivering a .571 save percentage across two appearances—highlighted by a standout 19-save performance against Robert Morris. Though the Lakers didn’t secure the win, Jawor’s poise and shot-stopping ability stood out in a hard-fought matchup. The 2025 season is a landmark one for Mercyhurst. After years of dominance at the Division II level, the Lakers have entered the Division I stage with a youthful roster, a new head coach in Trey Keeley, and something to prove. While postseason eligibility will have to wait, performances from players like Jawor have helped Mercyhurst secure key wins—most notably a dominant 22–6 victory over Hampton. As Mercyhurst builds its foundation in Division I, Jaret Jawor is emerging as a core piece of that future. With two years of eligibility left and a growing confidence in the cage, expect Jawor to continue evolving into one of the NEC’s top goaltenders. Keep your eye on No. 12—he’s just getting started. Enjoy my conversation with future star Jaret Jawor. Support the show…

Off the field, Guyette is pursuing a degree in forensic science and has been recognized for her academic achievements, earning spots on the ACC Academic Honor Roll and the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. Send us a text In this podcast episode, Notre Dame goalie Isabel Pithie opens up about the mental side of goalkeeping and how she stays focused and ready for action. A key theme of her journey has been mental preparation—whether it’s staying locked in during games, visualizing key moments, or learning how to reset after conceding a goal. She talks about how visualization and awareness of the game’s flow keep her mentally sharp, even when not in the cage. Pre-game, she keeps it simple with quick jogs and feel-good shots, focusing more on confidence than technical adjustments. The trust in her extensive training helps her feel ready when called upon as a backup goalie. Izzy also dives into the importance of positive self-talk. Phrases like "Patience" and "Aggression" help her stay composed and assertive. Even when facing frustrations or tough moments, she uses these mantras to reset and keep her mindset focused on the next play. Through her journey from watching the game as a kid to standing confidently in net for the Irish, Izzy has developed a strong mental game, which she credits to both visualization and positive self-talk. She emphasizes how goalies need to stay resilient and focus on the process, not the mistakes. For younger goalies, Izzy's advice is clear: prioritize footwork, maintain a strong team mentality, and always remember why you play. Whether through gear preferences, self-talk, or keeping calm under pressure, Izzy’s approach offers valuable insights for goalies at all levels. Support the show…

While Pat may not be from the biggest hotbed for lacrosse and had what some to consider a "late start" into the sport he still had quite the impact getting named All-American his senior year of high school and team captain for his high schools state finalist team. Patrick started playing at Division III Lynchburg getting 97:18 in goal with a 50% save rate but quickly rose to be one of the best Division III goalies in the NCAA with many impressive stats such as starting all 21 games, being ranked 20th in the whole nation for saves, then ultimately ending his senior year off with an impressive 67.9% save rate on the season. After getting a degree in Exercise Physiology at Lynchburg he decided to start pursuing a master's in health care management at Johns Hopkins where he ended up playing in goal for them. Send us a text It's not often that a freshman goalkeeper earns the starting position on a team full of talent— but UAlbany's Landon Whitney shows the veterans how it's done. With Whitney in the cage, the Danes ended the 2024 season with a winning record, securing the American East Conference Championship, and making it to the second round of the Division I NCAA Championship Tournament. Hailing from the southern state of Georgia, Whitney isn't exactly from a lacrosse hotspot. Growing up in a large family, Whitney was well-versed in many sports, but eventually decided to focus on lacrosse. In this episode, Whitney discusses his transition into a northern-based boarding school, and how his decision to re-class helped him develop into a stronger athlete going into college. Whitney shares his tips for "exuding confidence" as a young or experienced goalie, as well as his reasoning for his dramatic eyeblack, with roots back to middle school lacrosse. A frequent attendee of Goaliesmith sessions, a training group of college-aged to middle school goalies, Whitney continues to grow his craft and shares how he learns from fellow goalies he is training alongside. Whitney's dedication and appreciation for the sport go a long way, as he trains younger goalies while continuing to lead his team from in the crease. After an outstanding freshman year, I can't wait to see what this talented young man has in store for the future! Support the show…

Send us a text On this episode of the Lax Goalie Rat podcast, I am joined by young breakout goalie Giancarlo Munaretto. Giancarlo Munaretto grew up playing hockey and didn't think too much about other sports. That was until in 6th grade when he decided to pick up lacrosse as a secondary sport. He played mid-field for his first two years. This was until his team needed a goalie and he decided he would try out. He ended up thoroughly enjoying playing goalie and started taking it seriously at the beginning of his 8th-grade year. Now a sophomore in High-School Giancarlo plays club lacrosse for True Illinois. He has received coaching from many amazing goalies such as: Anderson Moore, Goaliesmith, and some ex-collegiate goalies in his home town. I had the pleasure of coaching Giancarlo in my 6 week coaching program and it was awesome to work with him to level up the goalie game. Giancarlo is all about having an amazing attitude and mindset because he believes that is the key to winning games. He discusses how you always have to enjoy playing because you never know when it could end. As well as always having a positive attitude around your team because when they see the goalie down their attitudes will drop as well. Giancarlo also is a big believer in mastering the basics of a position to become the best possible player you can be. Enjoy this conversation with rising star Giancarlo Munaretto. Support the show…
