×How do you transition from team member to team leader without letting the pressure and power turn you into a bad boss? I interact so often with well-meaning new managers suddenly discovering how different it is to lead the team than to be a member of it. Luckily, we have the wisdom of executive coach and author Sabina Nawaz to turn to! Sabina wrote her new book, “You're The Boss: Become the Manager You Want to Be (and Others Need)” after spending more than 20 years counseling C-level executives and experiencing her own “bad boss” moment. She speaks with me about how to balance the pressure and power of management and use it to bring out the very best in your leadership journey, wherever on the corporate ladder you might be. Fine-tune your leadership with Sabina’s expertise: How to become pressure-proof so you can turn tension into teamwork; The microhabits that can help you be a compassionate leader (and partner, and parent); How to deal with the feedback distortion that occurs when you shift from team member to manager; Self-assessment questions that will identify your challenges and make you a better boss. With the uncertain state of the economy right now, money is on most people’s minds. Now is the perfect time to explore why our finances are so much more than “just numbers,” and how intricately emotions and money intertwine. My guest, Aja Evans, is a financial therapist and the author of the new book, Feel Good Finance . After noticing how often people in therapy sessions breeze past their money stresses, she set out to make talking through our financial concerns more commonplace. This one is certain to resonate—Aja’s insights left me feeling like I’d just had a cathartic therapy session myself. Identify your financial priorities and values with Aja’s expert advice: Why we need to consider our childhoods when thinking about money; How we can talk about money with our kids to set them up for their own financial futures; The hefty, wide-ranging impact of financial trauma (and why we need to address it); How to start figuring out our basic needs and making brave changes to get aligned. As a leader, how can you tackle disengagement on your team? Employee engagement is in crisis, and it’s costing more than just morale. According to Gallup, only 31% of the American workforce is engaged at work, while a staggering 17% are actively disengaged—cynical, vocal, and dragging others down with them. This unfortunate reality takes a toll on worker mental health, and also poses a full-blown productivity problem, with real financial consequences. In this episode, I unpack the latest findings from Gallup’s workforce engagement surveys and look at how leaders can leverage it as a blueprint for creating meaningful, motivating work environments. From setting clear expectations to building genuine connections and offering real opportunities for growth, we explore the practical ways to shift your team’s momentum. Take a deeper look at what the numbers say about leading your team to maximum impact: What the generational divide in employee engagement might reveal; Why it’s not as simple as blaming remote work for worker disengagement; How expectations create the foundation for a more engaged workforce. What would happen if you stopped pursuing a career destination and focused instead on the best direction? Too often, we find ourselves checking the “right” boxes to get the best degree and climb the corporate ladder, only to find ourselves unfulfilled as we near the top. There’s something wrong with that picture. Megan Hellerer, the author of “Directional Living: A Transformational Guide to Fulfillment in Work and Life,” joins me to talk about the approach she has adopted and the one she now teaches. Directional living is about recognizing that human beings change over time. It’s about eschewing a Final Destination and the resulting roadmap and instead focusing on what aligns with our lives and goals as we go through life. Embrace Megan’s individualized approach to constructing a fulfilling life and career: Why the American Dream just isn’t serving us anymore; Why we can’t define fulfillment by society’s limiting perception of success; How recalibrating your inner thermostat can help you start living directionally; Why the idea of “failure” is overrated and what to focus on instead. What separates a good manager from a great leader—and why does it matter for your career? The important difference between these two mindsets is often overlooked, but recognizing and honing a leadership approach can help land you the promotion, raise, or amazing new job you deserve. In this episode, I share three key dimensions where making the shift from a management to a leadership mindset really lets you shine. Through practical examples and workplace scenarios, I explore how leadership isn't about abandoning managerial skills and their inherent structure—it's about thinking more broadly, connecting more deeply, and pushing for change when it counts. From writing memos to preparing a presentation, anyone can start zooming out, questioning the status quo, and influencing outcomes at a higher level. Think big-picture with these little mindset shifts: The difference between being task-focused and people-focused; The benefits of shifting from execution to innovation; What it means to do the right thing, not just do things right; How to sharpen your leadership mentality in any situation. What can you or your organization do to make the workplace more inclusive for people with autism? Recently, RFK Jr., the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, attracted considerable criticism following his disparagingly blanket statements about people with autism. Many people in the autism community lead fulfilling lives full of love, joy, and productive work—despite the hapless and hopeless depiction of this population that RFK shared. This is an excellent moment to draw attention to my conversation with Amanda Kelly, the president and CEO of Firefly Autism and one of the founders of the groundbreaking Colorado Neurodiversity Chamber of Commerce (CNDCC). It’s impossible not to look at our growing talent shortage in this country and ask: why aren’t we hiring neurodivergent and autistic people? In this episode, Amanda dives into how we can all make our workplaces more welcoming for neurodivergent individuals, who make up one-fifth of our population. Whether you’re neurodiverse or neurotypical, Amanda’s jaw-dropping stats and pursuit of equity will inspire you: Learn about the shocking lack of career resources for autistic adults; Discover how organizations can make their workplaces more inclusive, for neurodivergent people and beyond; Break down the ongoing issues of neurodiversity and inequities in diagnosis; Understand the unique gender component of autism and its impacts. How could the SAVE Act send us tumbling back to the Suffragette era? This bill that’s pending review in the Senate could jeopardize voting access for up to 69 million American women. It would require all voters to prove citizenship with a passport or birth certificate in order to register to vote, which is a big problem for anyone who’s name has changed since birth—including through marriage—as well as anyone who doesn’t have easy access to such documentation. In this episode, I take a closer look at whether the concern from women and voter rights activists across the country is legitimate or overblown. Spoiler alert: it’s worse than I imagined. Make sure you’re in the know about this major threat, including: The specifics of the SAVE Act; The challenges that make this legislation so alarming to women’s and voter rights activists; How you can make your voice heard to prevent this bill from becoming law. How might public policy positively impact our drastically declining birth rate? President Trump has suggested that all new parents receive a one-time $5,000 payout in the hopes of encouraging people to have more children. You likely had some kind of strong reaction to this statement. Whether that was surprise at a Republican recommending a social support, concern about forcing people to have more kids, or annoyance at how insignificant an amount is on the table—you’re definitely not alone. It’s clear that people are having fewer babies these days. But it’s the reasons behind this fact that are sometimes in question and need to be addressed. In this episode, I take a closer look at, and share my thoughts on, how policy has—and potentially could—impact plummeting birth rates in the U.S. and beyond. Consider the interplay between public policy and early childhood care, including: The statistical divide between how many kids women want and how many they’re having; The glaring problems that get in the way of having children in today’s economy; The family-friendly policies we’ve seen proposed, passed, and tabled til now; How far we need to take these initiatives if we want to reverse the birth rate decline. Were the 1990s really the “girl power” era of women’s empowerment we remember? If you were “coming of age” or raising young girls 30 years ago, you probably remember the tumult of scantily clad celebs and brand-backed messaging ostensibly celebrating women’s empowerment. Sophie Gilbert, an author and The Atlantic staff writer, dives into just how empowering this period really was in her new book, Girl on Girl: How Pop Culture Turned a Generation of Women Against Themselves , which drops today. On today’s episode, Sophie leads us through her lightbulb moments and research for the book, exploring the social messaging that planted some pretty problematic ideas in the minds of young and teenage girls and people of all genders. This is an important history to examine, as is the question of how we avoid the same missteps in the future. Start talking about the real past and critical future of feminism, including: How we were fooled into believing sexual power was the only kind we could possess; Why the goal of commercial feminism changed so drastically from the early to the late 90s; How we can start to claim the power we deserve (even when it feels like we don’t have the time). What happens when your career becomes your whole identity? Passion for our careers can drive us to achieve great things. But a laser focus on the job can become the only thing in our lives, edging out the personal goals, hobbies, and relationships that make us well-rounded human beings. My guest today, psychologist Dr. Janna Koretz, founded Azimuth Psychological to help individuals in high-pressure positions who experience career enmeshment: the complete entrenchment of their identities in their work. Dr. Koretz and I discuss the potential pitfalls of living for work and how recognizing and aligning with our values serves as a compass to help us remain passionate and committed without losing ourselves to our careers. Dive into Dr. Koretz’s insightful take on career enmeshment, including: When single-minded passion for your work becomes problematic; What happens to your identity when your one-and-only focus is forced to shift; The inextricable interplay between values alignment and a satisfying career; Free tools that will help you name your values and start applying them purposefully. What can your workplace do to celebrate holidays like Women’s History Month the “right” way? Whether you’re proud of how your organization shows support for marginalized groups in the workplace or feel like it could be doing more, my conversation with DEI educator and Ampersand Workspace founder Veronique Porter is just as (if not more) relevant today as when it first aired in May of 2023. Veronique shares what her experience as a Black American woman, her education in international development and American studies and culture, and her work as a facilitator has taught her about the best way to approach this often fraught topic—a way to create company events and initiatives for heritage holidays that uphold both company and employee values and stand to make a real difference. Learn how your organization can host outstanding and inclusive cultural events: Why workplace wokeness doesn’t detract from the financial bottom line (and actually does the opposite); The significance of spending money and resources on heritage events; Why it’s vital to give every employee the chance to get involved; The importance of getting clear on the company’s values before diving in. How can you reclaim your power in a job that’s just “good enough”? It turns out The Perfect Job isn’t nearly as common as the LinkedIn posts would have us believe. Most of us spend our working hours in a job that’s okay but far from perfect. The good news is that you can thrive in a just-okay career if you embrace the art of “leading yourself.” In this episode, I sit down with Elizabeth Lotardo to talk about this very concept, which doubles as the title of her new book, Leading Yourself. Elizabeth has spent years helping people at all different stages of their careers discover the potential that awaits when they stop pursuing perfection and begin taking charge of the job they’re already in. Learn to maximize the job you already have by uncovering: The reason we feel like we’re failing if we aren’t holding out for the perfect job; Why it can be empowering to “give up on the dream” of getting a paycheck from our passion How small changes in your day-to-day can make a huge difference; And when you might need to phone it in before you fall apart. Feel like you’re the only one keeping your friendships going? Recently, I received a letter from a listener about an extremely relatable issue: how to build or rebuild stronger friendships when it seems to be increasingly difficult to do so. You’ve probably experienced some shifts in friend frequency and intensity throughout your adult years. Making plans and finding the right people to share platonic relationships with gets harder as our priorities shift and our lives get more hectic. In this episode, I explore some of the ways I’ve dealt with this increasingly common and publicized problem myself. Spark some hope with these actionable approaches to fixing your friendships: Identify exactly what’s missing from your relationships; Normalize and ritualize casual hosting; Keep resentment from curbing your call for companions. What do you know about matrescence? Most people will agree that everything changes with parenthood, and that’s what this term covers: the process of becoming a mother. Yet, despite shared private understanding and a large body of recent research on all the physiological and mental effects, many policies and medical processes continue to ignore what mothers have always known. Lucy Jones is a journalist and the author of Matrescene: On The Metamorphosis of Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Motherhood . In this episode, we delve into what’s lacking in support for matrescence and why, and how ongoing research, policy changes, and sharing information through resources like Lucy’s book can help change the conversation. Whether you’re already a mother, are considering becoming one, or support one in any way, Lucy’s insights will be enlightening and empowering. Discover the details of matrescence and why we need to talk more about it: The origins and importance of having a word for this universal, natural experience; The impact of not having enough information in the early months and years of parenthood; The permanent changes the brain goes through during this period; The social disconnect between the expectation to give birth and the lack of support. How can positive psychology help curb burnout? We’re a bunch of overachievers here in the Bossed Up community, and burnout is a pretty common thread between us. Burnout is painful, frustrating, and—as my guest on this episode explains—more avoidable than we might think if we’re willing to work on “working happier.” Stella Grizont was named the world’s leading happiness expert by TIME Magazine. She uses her master's in Applied Positive Psychology to help leaders find career fulfillment and organizations engage their employees more deeply. We discuss her recent book and how her approach can help you help yourself, leading to more enjoyment in work and in life. Embrace Stella’s thoughtful approach to positive psychology by uncovering: The impact of negativity bias and a play mindset when navigating uncertainty; How to practice self-compassion when waffling between anxiety and excitement; Learned optimism and the three Ps that can help you cultivate a brighter outlook; Why we should focus on “What do I want to be?” before “What do I want to do?” Related Links: The Work Happiness Method: Master the 8 Skills of Career Fulfillment - https://www.stellagrizont.com/work-happiness-method-book Download the Vision Generator - https://stellagrizont.mykajabi.com/visiongenerator Sign up for Stella’s newsletter on her website - https://www.stellagrizont.com/ Connect with Stella on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/stella-grizont-a4b7792/ Connect with Stella on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/stellagrizont/ Oprah speaks to finding your vision - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfrOcfc8zNs LEVEL UP : a Leadership Accelerator for Women on the Rise - https://www.bossedup.org/levelup Bossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/ Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/…
When did you first experience imposter syndrome? So many people resonate with feeling like frauds who sweet-talked their way into their positions and could be found out, socially ostracized, and fired at any moment. Imposter syndrome or impostorism is often seen as a women’s issue, and I am always quick to stress this isn’t the case—it’s a human issue. A recent report provides some new numbers that raise a different question: is impostorism a men’s issue? In this episode, I break down what these findings really reveal. It’s time to refocus the imposter syndrome conversation: Why this is so often considered a women’s issue; What the research says about who really experiences impostorism; Which traits actually lead to feelings of ineptitude. Why is it so hard to remember that we deserve to be heard? Staying silent in our professional lives can feel like the safe choice, but it can have unintended consequences on our overall career trajectory. In this episode, Elaine Lin Hering shares what her research, experience in mediation and conflict management, and new book "Unlearning Silence" have to say about why so many of us—especially women—are reticent to raise our voices. She highlights the intrinsic connection between wielding our voices—both audibly and through our actions—and recognizing our self-worth. Examine the ways that silence impacts your own life, including: Where does our tendency toward silence stem from?; Why we need to question and dismantle the “babble hypothesis”; Why just talking more isn’t the goal of unlearning silence; How leaders can actively push back against silencing team members. We need to talk about the impact of the childcare crisis on the workforce! Some people may wonder why this topic matters beyond its impact on families of young children. The truth is, this issue has wide-reaching ramifications for the nation’s economy as a whole, and that deserves our attention whether we have children or not. In this episode, I share what the research and statistics reveal about the direct link between the exorbitant price of childcare and the labor shortage that’s crunching companies across the U.S. Let’s break down why this is a problem everyone should care about: The disproportionate impact of childcare costs on different demographics; The broader ramifications on the economy as a whole; What organizations can do to start making a difference. How much do you know about menopause? Though it’s as natural as puberty and affects almost everyone with a uterus, this life stage has long been a taboo subject in polite society. In recent years, though, the conversation has gotten a lot louder. Dr. Jen Gunter has been a leader in this conversation as an obstetrician and gynecologist with more than three decades of experience. Dr. Jen is the author of multiple bestsellers and a popular blog, and the host of the Body Stuff with Dr. Jen Gunter podcast. In our conversation, Dr. Jen and I dig into the myths and symptoms of menopause and how this transition affects women in the workplace. Learn more about this critical transition and its impacts in the workplace, including: Why we are only recently starting to talk about this stage of life; Some misconceptions debunked by the facts about menopause; The complicated history of menopausal hormone therapy; How changes in the workplace could improve this sometimes chaotic experience. What would change if you decentered your career from your identity? Decentering your work from your identity might seem a counterintuitive topic for a podcast about career development, but burnout and disillusionment are running rampant these days, so it’s not too surprising this concept is getting a lot of airtime. Our work should be important and provide us with purpose, but it shouldn’t become the only important and purposeful part of who we are. Taking the spotlight off the career part of your identity gives you space and permission to respect the role of work in your life without requiring you to relinquish every part of yourself to your job. In this episode, I outline three considerations to help you realize this shift. Consider a more balanced alternative to living for your job: How community involvement contributes to who you are and will be; Why passive rest and renewal don’t cut it, and what to try instead; Why you need to get real about the divide between your work identity and the rest of your life. How do you deal with a mistake or criticism at work? If you find yourself starting to spiral into anxiety, overthinking everything you’ve ever done that might have caused the current situation, you’re far from alone. We’re all human, and, unfortunately, that means when we screw up or receive less than glowing feedback at work, we have a tendency to take it personally. In this episode, I explore how we can move away from shame in these situations and shore up our self-worth so that we can resiliently and proactively deal with our mistakes in ways that empower positive change and set us up to be stronger in the future—both in and beyond our careers. Try these tricks for taking the personal out of professional missteps: How to make sure you’re telling yourself the actual, objective story; Why it’s essential to name, rather than negate, whatever you’re feeling; How to use that unfortunate situation to plan your confident comeback. Caregivers: when’s the last time you didn’t feel stressed out? In August, the U.S. Surgeon General released an advisory, titled “Parents Under Pressure,” that identified parental mental health as an urgent public health issue. Nearly half of parent participants in the surveys confirm that “their stress is completely overwhelming.” The wellbeing of these adults is worrisome on its own, and research also shows a strong correlation between poor mental health in parents and poor physical and mental health in children. In other words: this public health issue impacts multiple generations and, by extension, our entire country . In this episode, I take a closer look at the advisory and what workplaces should be doing to mitigate this national crisis. Discover what the research says and what your workplace should be doing about it: Seven unavoidable causes of parental stress; The overt connection between parental mental health and talent retention; Specific steps organizations can take to help improve the wellbeing of employees who are also parents or caregivers. How can managers navigate the ever-changing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging landscape? While most people grasp the overall intention of DEIB—fair and equitable treatment for all workers—the specifics are nuanced and easily misunderstood, and they can be difficult to implement, especially in the face of recent pushback. Alida Miranda-Wolff is a DEIB practitioner, author, and podcast host driven by a deep passion for cultivating belonging. In 2019, she launched Ethos Talent, a full-service DEIB and employee advocacy firm that serves companies all around the world. In this episode, she leverages her decade of expertise to explain how support for this field has fluctuated over the years and what leaders—and first-time managers in particular—can do to facilitate the day-to-day integration of these practices, which are deeply intertwined with basic human rights. Elevate DEIB in your own leadership practice with these takeaways: How managers can be inclusive and equitable in their day-to-day leadership; How to navigate difficult interpersonal situations through a DEIB lens; Why the current political climate is such a challenge for DEIB practitioners and managers; The problem with the segmentation of DEIB within organizations. How will the various abortion bans across the U.S. affect HR policies? When Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022, federal protections on abortion ceased, and states were suddenly free to make independent decisions about this essential healthcare issue. The new laws range from full allowance to complete bans and criminal charges for those who circumvent them. So how are employers and HR teams navigating the impacts of this change, and how are employees across the country reacting when it comes to travel and job change considerations? The consequences of how these new laws impact women and their careers—both in states with bans and those without—can’t be overstated. Men comprise over 90% of the CEOs in the U.S.—so how do we help them become allies in the vital pursuit of workplace equality? Rather than dismissing the defensiveness that sometimes arises in men who believe promoting more women to power means taking theirs away, Wendy Wallbridge uses her platform to change the narrative. She teaches tech companies how to create cultures of belonging and strategies for workplace equality, with a focus on equipping men as allies. Her strategies show next-generation business leaders that the right approach to equality lifts everyone up: the employee, the executive, and the company. Discover how both men and women leaders can pursue gender equality in the workplace, including: The very real benefits of gender equality for men in positions of power; Why emotional intelligence is the leadership skill of the future; The three biggest challenges facing women and non-binary people in the workplace; How to use micro-interventions to improve inequality in the corporate world. Earlier this year, the FTC put forth a ruling that would ban non-compete agreements nationwide. But last month, a Texas federal court blocked this endeavor, leaving workers in limbo while the Supreme Court considers taking up the issue next. In today’s episode, I explore what’s going on and why there is still hope for a new path forward to defeat non-compete agreements for good. Get the latest details on this recent workers’ rights development: Why the lack of a federal ban isn’t the end of the story; Where the power to prevent harmful non-competes lies now; What we as citizens can do to foster fair policies for workers. Growth mindset is a hot topic these days. We hear a lot about how important it is to approach life and work open to learning, changing, and growing. This concept is often focused on the individual, but my guest today centers her research on how to build a workplace culture that fosters a growth mindset for all. Mary C. Murphy is a professor of psychological and brain sciences at Indiana University and a protege of mindset scholar Carol Dweck. During her PhD, she began to explore the potential for cultures of growth to create learning organizations. Mary and I explore the research and practice behind how employees and leaders alike can start transforming their organizations with growth in mind. Discover how cultures of growth build better businesses for all, including: How to identify the current mindset culture of your workplace; The difference between cultures of growth and cultures of genius; How to circumvent mindset triggers with mindful feedback; The huge impact of cultures of growth on diversity and equity. What do you think of when you hear the term “glass cliff”? I have been pondering this concept for a while, especially in light of the upcoming election. In today’s episode, I share my thoughts on the problems, and potential opportunities, inherent in the social construct that so often presents women with their opportunity to lead only when the ship is sinking. If you have ever sought or been offered a promotion that seems a bit doomed to fail, this episode is for you. Consider the glass cliff on your way through the glass ceiling as we explore: The origin of this term and the research that backs it up; The potential dangers of accepting a leadership role in a crumbling company; The potential opportunity waiting within this gender-biased blind spot. What individual, organizational, and policy changes will help us transform the daily grind into the good life? The conversation around work-life balance and women in the workplace can feel stalled. You might speak out and speak up about the problems and inequity you see every day, yet insufficient individual solutions remain the most common recommendations. This lack of progress highlights a widespread systemic problem. Brigid Schulte has quite literally written the book on what’s up with our ongoing struggle to balance a good life with a sustainable career. Her latest book, Over Work: Transforming the Daily Grind in the Quest for a Better Life , is available today! Brigid joins me to discuss what her research has revealed about our continuing struggle to make work actually work for us. Learn what needs to happen to transform our hustle culture into something healthier, including: The declining of the American Dream; Why we need to look beyond paid labor when we talk about “work”; The importance of good middle management; Where the U.S. should look for policy inspiration. How do you handle the sting of being passed over for a promotion? Unfortunately, for ambitious women, this frustrating experience tends to be part of the package deal. We’re always pushing ourselves outside our comfort zones—so, of course we won’t get every opportunity we go after. In this episode, I share how to manage the emotional aftermath of this normal but distressing experience without losing your drive. Tackle these three tips for coming out on top after a promotion pass-over: Why you need to let yourself feel all the feelings; How to get clear on what your career future looks like now; When it’s time to think about moving on. How do you navigate grief in the workplace in an empathic and supportive way? We all experience loss, and we might default to assuming the only place for grief is in the home. The truth is that a loss permeates every aspect of our lives, sometimes for years or even decades, and it certainly crosses into the workplace. Krista St-Germain experienced a devastating loss in 2016 when her husband was killed by an impaired driver. That trauma propelled her into grief, then therapy, then research. Today, she is the founder of the Mom Goes On group coaching program and the host of the Widowed Mom podcast. She shares her hard-won wisdom on what we need to know about grief and how to navigate it in the workplace, both for ourselves and in support of others. Question your assumptions about grief and learn to better support yourself or others who are navigating it, including: How we’ve come to misunderstand the grieving process; The role time plays when we are healing from a loss; How to navigate interactions with grieving coworkers; The possibilities of life beyond grieving and post-traumatic growth.
