It’s show #582 - On today’s show, we’re talking about tear out on cherry, stock prep time savings: planer or jointer, and there’s bugs in my nut wood. Sponsored by Woodcraft Woodcraft is looking out for you guys. Do you know how? They want to make sure you know what to expect when it comes to this whole tariff debacle. Because tariffs are obviously going to impact a LOT of the major power tool purchases woodworkers make in the foreseeable future. So while details and dates are somewhat fluid, here are the most current timelines: JPW (that’s Jet and Powermatic): June 15th Laguna - July 1st Sawstop - Mid-July Woodcraft is trying to be as transparent as possible and they’ll be sending out emails about this in the future. Bottom line is, prices are going up. Woodcraft didn’t set the prices so don’t shoot the messenger. So if you’re in the market and were thinking about making a major purchase, it probably behooves you to do it now. In fact, here’s one better. When you go to woodcraft.com, you’ll get a little popup offering you a discount for signing up for their newsletter. Do it, because you can save 10% off your first order. Exclusions apply so you’ll want to read that fine text but hey, a discount’s a discount. Sponsored by You If you want to help support the show, you can do so by going to Patreon.com/woodtalk and signing up to become a patron of the show. What's on the Bench Marc has found his epoxy redemption and completed the mantel project. Shannon has started demo on his new deck. Matt is fixing stuff...then breaking it again. Kickback Steve Goldberg has Japan feedback for Steve Goodloe. He recommends the Takenaka Carpentry Museum in Kobe, the Ritsurin Garden in Takamatsu. Check out the Nakashima exhibit upstairs. Finally seek out the local craft shops and talk to the woodworkers. He found a shop called Inoue Hamono in Tokyo. The family/owners were friendly and helpful and I brought a dovetail chisel back to America. Listener Questions Drew was making a breadboard tenon and got some tearing along the baseline with his brand new straight router bit and asks why. Misha has short time in his shop like most of us and is looking to save time on stock prep but not wanting to buy both a jointer and a planer. Does he buy a planer or jointer? Can he get by with a planer alone? He does point out a pretty slick planer sled jig on Instagram. Steve has inherited some Butternut that was air dried and has some signs of bugs. What should he do with the material? It’s show #581 - On today’s show, we’re talking about…making stains suck less, cutting angled tenons, and what to do with all that ash? PLUS we have a new sponsor of the show! Sponsored by You If you want to help support the show, you can do so by going to Patreon.com/woodtalk and signing up to become a patron of the show. What's on the Bench Marc is building with epoxy! Shannon is finishing with a ketchup packet. Matt is finishing up kitchen stuff and still sawing stuff too. Kickback Joe reaches back out to us to say his hand plane issues were because of the "friggin' frog" in the wrong place. Andy wants to tell us about a new modeling software at Layout.computer that was designed for chair makers but has now added a casework component too. Brandon offers the advice of putting an air filter outboard of the intake on his dehumidifier and what a difference it has made. Andrew calls in to share his surgeon father's advice about being cut with a dull tool or sharp tool, spoiler alert, "flappy bits" is a technical term. New Sponsor - Woodcraft We reminisce about our early Woodcraft store experiences and the classes we have taken there. We are thrilled to be a part of that journey for other woodworkers and look forward to working with Woodcraft. Listener Questions David wants to know why stains suck so much and we try to tell him they don't...and fail. Marc suggests making a blotch control to help with stain absorption. Steve looks for advice on making angled tenons for a chair using power tools. Angled mortise or angled tenon? Paul has several Ash logs that were killed by the Ash Borer and asks for advice on what to do with them. Steve is taking a trip to Japan and wants to know some woodworking related stuff to see. We don't know but want to know so are asking the audience for advice. Write/call in and tell us your suggestions. Kickback Zack listened to all the shows and submits his comments through history all at once. Bram comments that made jinxed himself when he said he would never want to have to cut enough dovetails to fill and entire kitchen. Tom sums up our host's personalities perfectly. It’s show #576! On today’s show, we’re talking about a big WIA Recap, using a friend’s shop, resawing on the table saw, and when to use certain woods Sponsored by You If you want to help support the show, you can do so by going to Patreon.com/woodtalk and signing up to become a patron of the show. Matt is shortening his life huffing paint fumes. Woodworking in America Recap Ryan, Kyler, and Paul wrote in with glowing reviews of Woodworking in America. For some it was the first ever woodworking conference while others had previous experience with the show. In all it was a positive vibe with a lot more focus on the presenters and less on the marketplace. The general feel is that we hope the show continues and can keep the smaller, education focused feel. Listener Questions Karter has a neighbor with great tools that he uses from time to time and asks how he can suggest that neighbor buy more tools so he can have his cast offs. Mark is resawing on his table saw with a small 8 1/4" blade and asks how he can get better results. David was recently given a bunch of wood and asks for resources to learn about which species are best for what application.
