×When we look at the prophets we are often able to find sections when God turns his attention to speaking about a future hope for his people. For example, in the book of Isaiah we see a shift in chapter 40 when God through Isaiah starts proclaiming what the future will look like for his people when Christ comes. Even a prophet like Amos, in which so much of the prophecy contains judgment, ends which the future hope of restoration at the very end of chapter 9. We are coming to the section in Jeremiah that is often called “the book of encouragement” or “the book of consolation.” The reason is that in Jeremiah 30:2 we see the Lord instruct Jeremiah to write a book of all the words that he is speaking to him. Jeremiah 30-33 contain words of encouragement through prophecy and lived out pictures that describe what will happen when Christ comes. In fact, Jeremiah 30:3 gives a summary for the contents of this encouraging word… To read more of this lesson click here . In 2 Samuel 12 the prophet Nathan comes to King David after David had sexually sinned with Bathsheba and attempted to cover up the pregnancy by killing Bathsheba’s husband and marrying her. So Nathan must come to David with a story about a rich man and a poor man. The rich man had a very large flock of sheep while the poor man had only one small ewe lamb that he bought. The poor man raised this small sheep with the family and fed the sheep from the meager food the family had. He loved this sheep and cared for it like a family member. The rich man had a guest come to his house and rather than killing one of his many sheep, he took the poor man’s lamb and killed it for his guest. At hearing this, David’s anger burned and he passes righteous judgment. This rich man deserves to die for what he has done. He owes this poor man four lambs for the one he has taken from this poor man because of what he did and because he had no pity. Nathan then responds to David’s indignation by telling David that you are that rich man. God gave you everything but that was not enough for you. What is important to consider is how we can so easily see the sins and unrighteous acts in other people but are blinded by our own sins. When we do something, we do not see what is wrong with it but we are outraged when we see others do the very same thing. This is where Paul opens in Romans 2… To read more of this lesson click here . Isaiah 40 is the proclamation of good news. God is giving words of comfort to his people so that they will stand on high mountains proclaiming, “Behold your God!” (Isaiah 40:9). Then Isaiah pictures the immense power and majesty of God. Isaiah 40 is to help us have the right lens of the Lord when we look to him. How we look at the Lord will affect how we live. So Isaiah is giving a clear picture of the Lord. The Lord comes with power who will gather his sheep into his arms and gently lead them (Isaiah 40:10-11)… To read more of this lesson click here . We are looking at Romans 1 in which the apostle Paul is teaching what happens to us as humans and as a culture when we fail to honor God and give him thanks. Three times in Romans 1 we are told that God gives us over to our sinful desires (cf. Romans 1:24,26,28). In the last lesson we noticed that we are given over to our sexual desires which results in the degrading of our bodies with one another. But there is more destruction that comes from choosing to not live your life in honor, worship, and gratitude toward God. In Romans 1:28-32 we will see the apostle Paul describes more outcomes for us when we do not think that God is worthy of our worship, time, and praise… To read more of this lesson click here . First Kings 13 set the tone for the spiritual condition of the northern nation called Israel under the reign of King Jeroboam. Some time back we studied about a man of God coming to Jeroboam and pronouncing judgment for his sins. Jeroboam attempted to have the man of God arrested, only to have his arm wither so that he could not draw it back. Rather than listen and repent, Jeroboam begs for healing and attempts to turn this man of God into a prophet for hire. Wisely, the man of God refuses and returns back to Judah. Jeroboam lacks concern for God’s will… To read more of this lesson click here . This was the first of three invasions until Jerusalem was captured, the nation destroyed, and the majority of the people are carried away into captivity. We have a song in our songbook titled, “Where Could I Go?” The first verse talks about the difficulty of facing temptations. So then the question is asked, “Where could I go but to the Lord?” The second verse speaks about having good neighbors. But when my soul needs manna from above, where could I go but to the Lord? The third verse talks about having good friends and receiving comfort from God’s word. But when I face death, where could I go but to the Lord? …In Isaiah 40:27 the people are questioning God. They are saying that God does not see what they are experiencing and that God does not care. Isaiah has given two pictures about God through verse 17. God is pictured as a saving shepherd, gathering his sheep into his arms. God is also pictured as being so great in power and majesty that nothing is too hard or too big for him to handle. The third picture of God that we are going to see begins in Isaiah 40:18. The key question to this picture is asked twice. With whom will you compare God? (Isaiah 40:18,25). What Isaiah is going to tell us about God is so that we will draw the same conclusion as the song, “Where could I go but to the Lord?” To read more of this lesson click here . We are coming to a text in God’s word that is full of controversy and resistance. But we should not be surprised by this because of what the apostle Paul declared earlier in Romans 1. In Romans 1:21 we learn that when we do not honor God and give him thanks then we will become futile in our thinking and our foolish hearts are darkened. In other words, what we are going to be taught in this text we are going to naturally resist. Unless we are open to being taught from God, we are going to reject Romans 1:24-32… So I am going to plead with you as we begin our study of this text to listen to what God is telling us. Do not reject what you read because it does not sound right or because it makes us uncomfortable. God is trying to save us from disaster. God is trying to keep us from destruction. There are three things that God gives us over to when we do not give God honor or give God thanks. We will be able to consider two of them in this lesson. Lord willing, we will look at the third way God gives us up in the next lesson. Open your copies of God’s word to Romans 1:24-27 and we are going to see what God is teaching us the path we are on when we do not honor God or give him thanks… To read more of this lesson click here . In Isaiah 40, the Lord speaks through Isaiah to his people to give them comfort. The greatest comfort you can ever have in this world is knowing God. No one cares about you more than God does. God wants the people to see him the right way. The people think that God does not care what they are going through and will not act on their behalf (cf. Isaiah 40:27). But Isaiah prophesies about the God they need to see when the Christ comes for his people (cf. Isaiah 40:3-5). The first picture that God gave to his people in Isaiah 40 is a picture of himself as a saving shepherd. God comes for his people using his mighty, saving power to gather his sheep to himself. God himself will stoop down and gather his sheep into his arms, drawing them near and caring for them (Isaiah 40:10-11). But now the Lord wants to give another picture to his people. God wants to give his people another lens so that they will see him properly. Open your copies of God’s word to Isaiah 40:12-17… To read more of this lesson click here . In Romans 1:18-20 the apostle Paul has made a very important point regarding the gospel. No one has an excuse before God. There is no one in the world that can say on the day of judgment that they are excused from knowing God. Why? The reason why all are without excuse is because God has revealed himself to everyone through the creation. We are to look at the things that have been made and see God. Psalm 19 begins by proclaiming that the creation shouts the glory of God day after day and night after night. The creation is supposed to cause all people to seek God and learn what this God wants them to do. The problem, according to the apostle Paul, is that we suppress the truth… To read more of this lesson click here . How do you look at God? When you think about God, what do you think about? What characteristics about God come to your mind? How you look at God will change everything about how you live your life and how you will live before him. For example, in Matthew 25 when we read the parable of the talents, the man who received one talent and hid that talent in ground gave an explanation for why he buried his talent. He explained, “Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, so I was afraid” (Matthew 25:24-25) . The one talent man proclaims that the reason he did nothing with what the master gave him was because of how he looked at his master. He saw his master as being harsh. Is this the way we think about God? Do we think about God being hard and harsh? The point I want us to think about as we start this series is to consider how we think about God. It is important to consider how we think about God. What do we see when we look at him? The prophet Isaiah is going to tell the people to take a good look at God. But what does Isaiah want his people to see and what does he want us to see? To read more of this lesson click here . The apostle Paul has begun his letter to the church in Rome by proclaiming to them the gospel. In the first six verses of Romans sets forward that the gospel is concerning the Son who descended from David and was declared to be the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead. Paul then puts forward that he is not ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God for salvation for all who believe because the righteousness of God is revealed in it. But I want us to think about how the message of the gospel has an important implication. If the gospel is God’s power to save all who believe, then there is an important question that must be asked: Saved from what? Why do we need salvation? Why is God offering salvation through the gospel? What are we being saved from? The rest of Romans 1 tells us the truth about our situation before the Almighty God… To read more of this lesson click here . We are talking about how to have a heart for the city. In the lesson this morning we looked at the first seven verses of Jeremiah 29 where Jeremiah writes a letter to the exiles who have been captured and now living in Babylon. Jeremiah tells them how they are to live while in Babylon. We noticed that they were to settle in the city, seek the welfare of the city, and pray for the city while they lived in Babylon. We drew the same conclusions for us while we wait for the return of Jesus. But there were more directions that God gave through Jeremiah in this letter. There was more about how to have a heart for the city and be the people God calls us to be while we wait for God’s return. So open your copies of God’s word back to Jeremiah 29 and we are going to look at the rest of this chapter. As you are turning to Jeremiah 29 I want us to think about the difficulty of what Jeremiah has told the people to do. It can be hard to wait for God to come return them to their home. It can be hard to seek the welfare of the city and pray for it when you see the wickedness of the city. So how to do we wait and how can maintain these commands while we wait? One of the consistent messages that Jeremiah has been proclaiming that has been recorded for us in our recent studies of Jeremiah is that the people who have been captured by the Babylonians are not returning soon. False prophets have been proclaiming that the captured people as well as the captured articles of the temple would return in two years (cf. Jeremiah 27:16; 28:3-4). Instead of a quick reversal, God has proclaimed that the nations will serve Babylon through many of Babylon’s kings (cf. Jeremiah 27:6-7). So what should the people who have been exiled in Babylon do while they live there? What should be their attitude toward living away from their homeland, longing to return? In particular, what should they do in Babylon and what should be their attitude toward Babylon while in exile? We are going to look at what they are told to do while in Babylon because we live in similar circumstances in this way: we are told that our citizenship is in heaven while we wait here for our Savior to return (cf. Philippians 3:20-21). But what should we do while we wait for Jesus’ return and what should be our attitude toward the world and toward the city while we wait? The first day of the week has arrived. Mary Magdalene and the women came to the tomb and found the stone taken away. Rather than believing Jesus had risen from the dead, the women believe that the body has been moved. Peter and John also go to the tomb. But verse 9 tells us that the disciples “did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise form the dead.” Mary remains at the tomb crying. She sees Jesus but does not know it was him. But when Jesus says her name, she recognizes that it is the Lord Jesus. The message John is showing by the Holy Spirit through this gospel is that faith comes from understanding the scriptures, not by sight. To read more of this lesson click here . Jesus has explained that the cross is the history changing moment for the world. The cross is the judgment of the world, the neutralization of Satan’s power, the exaltation of Jesus as the Christ, and means by which the world can be drawn to the Father through Jesus. After saying these things, John 12:36 tells us that Jesus departed and hid himself from them. This is the end of the public ministry of Jesus. Jesus has come to Jerusalem with his final offer of salvation and reconciliation to the Father. The cross would be the final message to the world of who Jesus is. One of the problems that Jeremiah is facing as a prophet of God is that there are so many false voices that are telling the people things that God did not actually say. We have seen in our study of Jeremiah many statements about the false prophets who are leading the people astray (cf. Jeremiah 2:8; 5:13; 5:31; 14:13-15; 23:13-16; 23:21-31). We are going to look at this problem in Jeremiah 27-28. How were the people supposed to know what was right and wrong and what was true and false when there were so many prophets saying false things? What were the people supposed to do with all of the religious noise? The answers we observe is going to teach us and help us to seek the truth with all the religious noise and false teachings we see in our world today… To read more of this lesson click here . We are looking at pictures of our atonement in our theme for this year. In our first lesson we considered the pictures that show Jesus as the one who will bear our sins, carrying them away far from us. Our sins have been cast into the depths of the seas and have been removed from us, as far as the east is from the west because Jesus gave his perfect life for us and then rose from the dead three days later. I want to turn our attention to another picture that is given to us about Jesus so that we can see another facet regarding what Jesus’ death is to mean for us. How do you think about God’s word? What is your attitude toward it? Psalm 19 gives an amazing declaration about how the righteous look at the word of God. They are more desirable than gold— than an abundance of pure gold; and sweeter than honey dripping from a honeycomb. In addition, your servant is warned by them, and in keeping them there is an abundant reward. (Psalm 19:10-11 CSB) David says that the teachings of the Lord are more desirable than gold. Please think about that. The word of God is more valuable to him than all the money he could have. Further, the word of God is sweeter to his taste than honey coming directly from the honeycomb. Our theme for this year is a focus on Jesus and what he did to save us. In particular, we are going to look at all of the pictures that the scriptures give to describe our atonement. There is not a single picture or single teaching describing the work of Christ. So what I wanted to do from time to time this year is spend our time looking at the multidimensional pictures of Christ’s atonement for us. Our first picture of Jesus is to see him as our sin bearer. In our last lesson we talked about overflowing in contentment. Discontentment leads to all kinds of problems in this life. Not only does it lead to problems in the present, it can also draw you away from the pain and pierce you with many sorrows (6:10). The apostle Paul teaches us another picture of how we are to overflow as disciples of Jesus in the next paragraph. With contentment in mind, disciples of Jesus are to overflow in generosity. Notice what Paul says in 1 Timothy 6:18. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share. (1 Timothy 6:18 ESV) This is where Paul is going in this paragraph. Do good, be rich in good works, be generous, and be ready to share. So let’s look at how Paul teaches us to overflow in generosity… To read more of this lesson click here . Our theme this year, though disrupted by the coronavirus, has been the theme of Overflow. Jesus told his disciples that out of our hearts would flow streams of living water. So we have asked this question through the year: what flows out of us? It was not initially planned this way but two of the topics regarding what flows out of us comes from 1 Timothy 6. I had not planned to teach this book and its faith foundations. But the coronavirus changed all of the preaching plans for this year. So, seeing this was going to happen, I held off from doing overflow last month so that we would do two of them, back to back. In doing this we will also finish our series from 1 Timothy. What we are going to look at in today’s lesson is that we would overflow with contentment. People would look at us and see content Christians. So how do we find contentment? We have spent a number of our lessons this year talking about how to have hope when crushed by trials, when hopeless because of suffering and loss, when feeling alone, and when tempted. All of these difficulties of life, from temptations and trials to sinning and being alone can cause us to be anxious. In today’s lesson I want to speak about what the scriptures teach us about how to have hope when anxious. But I have already talked about a number of life areas where we experience anxiety. There is another area of life where anxiety sets in and that it is when it comes to money. The first word in Matthew 6:25 is the word, “Therefore.” Before we can enter this paragraph about worry, we need to reconnect to the prior paragraph. In verses 19-24 Jesus told us to treasure heavenly treasures and not earthly treasures. Make your treasure in heaven and not on earth. This idea is going to lead into this teaching about worry and anxiety. Therefore, do not worry about your life. Let me just stop before we go further in the lesson and just ask, “Are we worried about our lives?” What does the “therefore” have to do with this? We noticed that what you look at is going to affect your life. What you treasure is where your heart and your desires will be. So when Jesus says, “Therefore, do not worry about your life,” the “therefore” tells us that your life is not something we are supposed to treasure. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:4–7 ESV) Paul just taught Christians to not be anxious about anything. Do not worry about anything (CSB, NRSV, NLT). But Paul certainly could not be talking about times of crisis. Paul could not be talking about times of hardship and difficult. Sometimes we can take the scriptures and apply them in their ideal circumstances, rather than applying them at all times. We can want to read the words to not be anxious under general life circumstances. But when bad things happen or when terrible times come, then we can worry. We have been looking at this section in Jeremiah’s prophecy in which we see the Lord teaching how to have a heart for God. As we come to Jeremiah 25 we are coming to a chapter that most people are not going to be happy reading. We live in a time in our society where our culture does not like the idea of consequences for actions or experiencing judgment. In fact, we so bristle at the idea that modern Christian teaching tries to press that there is no such thing as the wrath of God. They do not believe God could be angry and have a problem with any such assertion. We want a God who is supportive and approves of everything that we do. We do not want to talk about wrath or judgment. So I say these things because Jeremiah 25 could be a jarring chapter to read. But wrath has an important place in God’s revealed character. Romans 1:16-17 is the thesis for this letter. Paul is not ashamed of the gospel because the gospel is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes. But then Paul continues by saying that in the gospel, the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith. Romans 1:17 has so much written about it as people try to understand what Paul is teaching. What is the righteousness of God? What does it mean that the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith? What does it mean that the righteous live by faith? How does this all work together for our faith? I want to begin the lesson by hearing a promise that God makes: I will give them a heart to know that I am the LORD, and they shall be my people and I will be their God, for they shall return to me with their whole heart. (Jeremiah 24:7 ESV) God says that he is going to give his people a heart to know him because they are going to return to him with their whole heart so that they will be in relationship. They will be the people who belongs to the Lord and the Lord will be their God. Now this is quite an amazing promise considering what we have been reading about concerning the people. We have read that the people do not have a heart for the truth. They just want to follow their own stubborn hearts. “For I am not ashamed of the gospel…” (Romans 1:16). It is a bold statement that I want us to think about as we begin this lesson. Paul was not ashamed of the gospel. Do you feel ashamed of the gospel? We do not want to be ashamed but we can certainly be tempted to be ashamed. I believe everyone would readily admit that we need to have more boldness. As bold as we might be with the gospel, all of us want to have a greater courage regarding the gospel. I want us to think about Paul saying that he was not ashamed of the gospel. This was a man who had been severely mistreated because of the gospel. Paul was imprisoned because of the gospel. He experienced beatings for the gospel. He was often near death for the gospel. Five times he was scourged with 39 lashes because of the gospel. Paul was beaten with rods three times for the gospel. Paul experiencing stoning for the gospel. Three times he was shipwrecked for the gospel. He experienced hunger, thirst, and sleepless nights for the gospel. Paul was in constant danger from people and from nature due to the gospel (cf. 2 Corinthians 11:23-29). How was Paul not ashamed of the gospel even with all he experienced?
