Bear and a Banjo is a new musical podcast that tells the incredibly tall tale of a band that time forgot. Although history may have left them behind, Bear and Banjo rubbed shoulders with some of the greatest musical icons in history—from Leadbelly and Sister Rosetta Tharpe to Little Richard and Bob Dylan— unwittingly influencing the course of 20th century Americana. All their adventures are meticulously archived and presented by Dr. Q, played by Dennis Quaid. Bear and a Banjo features an ori ...

For the current Tune of the Week, I thought I'd give yet another tuning a try, and this one seems to be able to hit the notes without jumping around octaves and doing finger gymnastics (it's at least doable, anyway, not necessarily easy).JanetB

I really like this song on the 5-string banjo, called "Green Gates." Dave Hum recorded it along with "Silver Spears" and even a burst of "The Traveller" in the middle (cool), but I just wanted a backing track for "Green Gates." It's an old popular Irish reel. Of the 115 backing tracks which Dave Hum's family has gratefully made available for purcha…

Polly Put the Kettle On isn't usually in a modal key, but this week's Tune of the Week appears to be in Gm. If I knew more, I could confirm the scale is G aeolian. To play it the most easily I used cello banjo and brought the notes down four steps, so that's even more complex. I suppose this is all a good cognitive exercise to keep my brain a bit s…

This is a great Irish reel to learn and play. Anurakt Scheepers has some nice tabs for this song. Dave Hum's family also sells Dave's tabs and original backing track for the song on their website. I used Dave's YouTube video as a template to make my backing track. I added a pulsating synthesizer like he uses, which is cool. I used MIDI for the bass…

A Dave Hum classic. I enjoy playing this song. It's pretty easy to learn and play. If you didn't already know, you can go to "Settings" for any YouTube video and slow it down as much as you want, which is an invaluable tool to learn banjo parts.BanjoFret12
