News Roundtable: Labour Uproar or Conservative Extinction?
Manage episode 349343522 series 2875246
In this week's 'News Roundtable' episode, host Chris Wright is joined by writer and broadcaster, Christina Patterson, founder of Scientists4EU and presenter of Byline TV, Dr Mike Galsworthy, and broadcaster and journalist, Dan Hodges.
The conversation kicks off with the panel debating the need for the House of Lords following the latest updates of Baroness Mone's PPE scandal – is it outdated, or is there a viable alternative? They argue the pros and cons of the institution and debate Gordon Brown’s suggestion of a regional elected chamber which may curb dominating it with access to people who are able to donate large sums of money.
Together, they discuss Matt Hancock’s role in awarding PPE sourcing contracts during his time as Health Secretary, especially his nomination of his local pub landlord, who was awarded a PPE contract despite his evident lack of experience. They share their stances on the prospect of a public inquiry into COVID PPE contracts.
The panel talk through the announcements of Matt Hancock and Sajid Javid stepping down at the next election, predicting that a lot more Conservative MPs are likely to follow suit. Are they genuinely changing careers, or are they simply afraid of losing their seats? They touch upon the three former prime ministers who have announced that they will re-stand in the next election.
All this and much more debated on this week's Wright on the Nail!
'I Hit The Nail Right On The Head' by Billy Bremner.
