A Meal Fit for a King – John 12:1-11

Six days before Passover, Jesus went to His friend’s house in the town of Bethany. As you may recall, Bethany means, “House of affliction or house of poverty.” Within the walls of this small home, the King of all glory is anointed for His death with an unbelievably valuable perfume.

The Bible is clear when this supper took place and who was in attendance. The main character at the meal was Jesus – King of kings!

God wanted us to know Lazarus was there and he was eating. This is the same Lazarus Jesus raised from the dead. If you are eating you are alive.

Mary heard Jesus. She heard Him when He raised her brother from the grave. She trusted Him.

While they ate, Mary took a pound of expensive perfume and anointed Jesus for His burial. The fragrance was penetrating. The cost was great!

Mary anointed Jesus with what could potentially been the families life’s savings. This was their emergency fund. Now they had to rely on Jesus for everything!

Mary was criticized by those in attendance.

Jesus defended Mary and then commended her for her gift and service.

Many of the common people came to see Lazarus, the man whom Jesus raised from the dead.

The chief priests plotted murder. They planned the murder of Lazarus and the murder of Jesus.

Many of the Jews believed in Jesus as their Messiah.
