Digital marketing started in India between the period 1996 – 2005. However, the real growth of digital marketing started in 2008 when internet services reached the masses and people started using search engines like Google.
Digital marketing incorporates a diverse field of marketing including search engine optimization (SEO), search engine marketing (SEM), content marketing, web design, email marketing, influencer marketing, social media marketing and others.
In India, the 1996 launch of IndiaMART can be considered the start of e-commerce and digital marketing in India, followed by Flipkart in 2007.
Is Digital Marketing in demand in India?
India is a growth market for all kinds of businesses. The digital marketing industry is no exception.

According to reports in 2018 there where over 500 million internet users in India and that number continues to grow each year. Digital marketing the growing at a rate of 25-30% annually. Social media channels like Facebook and WhatsApp are popular.

One report by the International Journal of Advanced Research Foundation from 2017 suggests that

  • The Indian e-Commerce industry is growing at an astounding rate. It is expected to account for 1.61% of the global GDP by 2018.
  • India is set to become the fastest-growing market in the Asia-Pacific region, with an expected growth rate of over 57% between 2012 and 2016.
  • A large percentage of population subscribed to broadband internet, rapidly increasing 3G internet users and a recent introduction of 4G across the country.

According to the IJARF report, the top kinds of online marketing are:

  • Social media marketing
  • Search marketing
  • Website development
  • Email marketing
  • Mobile marketing
  • Video marketing
  • Webcasts
  • SMS marketing

Companies That Build the Roadmap for Digital Marketing in India (1996 – 2007)

The dot com boom was at its peak in the world in the 1990s. However, there were around 15,000 internet users in India during this period.

Yahoo was launched in 1994, and Google in 1998. Following that, businesses around the world started realizing the potential of online selling and marketing. However, internet penetration was still extremely low, and ecommerce was still unknown in India.

What’s Next?

After the history of digital marketing in India, we need to move forward towards the future of digital marketing in India.

The internet penetration rate is expected to reach above 55% by the end of 2025. It is because of the fast development of telecommunications infrastructure.

As per the ‘2020 digital trends in Asia Pacific’ report by Adobe, India is one of the countries where interesting tech developments are happening. The Asia Pacific is a region that is in the league to become a leader in IoT by 2025. Such figures give a clear indication that digital marketing services will continue to experience growth and changes in India.
