The cave was sheltered by a thicket of alders and sweet-smelling cypresses, which was the roosting place of wide-winged birds, horned owls and falcons and cormorants with long tongues, birds of the coast, whose business takes them down to the sea. Trailing around the cavern's mouth was a thriving garden vine, with large bunches of grapes: from four separate neighbouring springs, four crystal rivulets channelled into running in different directions; and in soft meadows on either side, iris and wild celery flourished.
