“Those same things that soap operas are doing, we can do to keep readers engaged in our books.”

— Dr. Cindy Childress

Ghostwriter Dr. Cindy Childress has an eclectic set of daily rituals. She writes Instagram posts in the bath, stays hydrated… and watches the soap opera Days of Our Lives.

Cindy has watched it faithfully since the fourth grade, making it practically a lifelong ritual.

Say what you will about soap operas, but they’re a powerful example of stories that can hook you quickly and inspire intense loyalty.

As a successful ghostwriter working with entrepreneurs, Cindy aims to achieve those same goals.

As Cindy notes, soap operas are able to appeal to both long-time fans and brand-new viewers through stories that are instantly engaging.

“One thing they do that I’m always cognizant of in book-writing is they start every scene with conflict... you see the character and very quickly there is character development. So, you know where we are, you have an idea of who this character is, and what they want,” Cindy explains. “And you never see them close a scene without a character moving a certain amount, either toward or away from what they wanted.”

It’s an approach that makes for a well-written book chapter, fiction or self help.

Open with a conflict... then move forward.
