Introduction: Thank you so much, and thank you for leading us in worship today. It's wonderful to see everyone here this morning. I have some exciting news to share: Lucy and I are expecting a baby soon! We are overjoyed and filled with anticipation. Many of you have asked if we are ready, and while we might say yes, the truth is, we can never fully be prepared for the joys and challenges of parenthood. This leads me to reflect on the love and preparation that our Heavenly Father has for us, His children.
1. Why Are We God's Children? The simple answer is because He loves us. The Bible tells us in 1 John 3:1, "See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!" This love is beyond our full comprehension, a love that predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ. It's not by accident; it’s by His pleasure and will.
2. How Are We God's Children? We become children of God through Jesus Christ. Galatians 4:4-7 explains that at the right time, God sent His Son to redeem us so that we might receive adoption to sonship. Through Jesus, we are no longer slaves to sin but heirs of God. John 1:11-13 further emphasizes that all who receive Jesus and believe in His name have the right to become children of God. Our identity as God's children is secured by our faith in Jesus.
3. Our Duty as God's Children: As children of God, we have a duty to live according to His example. Ephesians 4:31-5:2 urges us to get rid of bitterness, rage, anger, and slander, and instead, be kind and compassionate, forgiving each other as Christ forgave us. Philippians 2:14-15 challenges us to do everything without grumbling or arguing so that we may become blameless and pure, shining like stars in a warped and crooked generation.
Conclusion: Today, let's remember and embrace our identity as God's beloved children. Let's strive to follow His example, living a life of love and integrity. Remember, we are not defined by our imperfections but by His perfect love for us. As we go about our lives, may we reflect His love and grace, knowing that we are deeply cherished and eternally secure in Him. Amen.
