In previous episodes, our podcast has said over and over again that one of the best ways to improve your writing is to read a lot: read more books. But instead of learning from books, too many fledgling writers learn to write primarily from movies, television and video games, and their writing suffers as a result.

Movies and video games can be well-crafted works of storytelling, but when it comes to writing fiction a good movie won’t help you hone your craft as well as a good book will, because written fiction is a unique medium with unique strengths. Mainly, movies and video games are audio/visual media, while fiction has more power to explore the internal and the invisible.

In this episode, Karlo Yeager Rodríguez returns to talk about the special tools written fiction has to offer, and why we must not let these tools gather dust.

Recommended Works:

  • Kurt Vonnegut, Slaughterhouse Five
  • Franz Kafka, The Metamorphosis
  • Toni Morrison, The Bluest Eye
  • Gabriel García Márquez, One Hundred Years of Solitude
