Podcast Episode Transcription:

It's what most people are using these days to replace the copper and copper used to be the gold standard in people's houses but I can tell you that here in Southern California specifically where we're at copper it wears out pretty quickly this is the Check a pro radio show check a pro Joe has assembled a team of prequalified home service contractors to bring you the latest in services products and techniques now here's your host the man with a hard hat and tool belt check a pro Joe plumbing is something that a lot of us take for granted we turn on the faucet flush the toilet we expect hot water from the water heater and sometimes things just don't go well I've asked an expert in the plumbing field his name is Bob Muller the owner of personal plumbing to join me here on the program today Bob how are you I'm doing well Joe thanks for having me hey it's so great to have you here today we get this question all the time from homeowners how do they know that their plumbing system needs to be replaced well that's a good question I guess I would have to start with asking the more specific question of which portion are we talking about but there are many you know portions to the plumbing system that we could be discussing here but specifically if we're talking about infrastructure which could be maybe the main sewer line or the main water line that leads from the street to the house and you know infrastructure definitely needs to be looked at over time to make sure that it's not deteriorating and that's all going to be specific to you know typically the area in which you're living it could be related to how the plumbing is coming into your house depending on if you're living in a raised foundation house or a slab house whether you're on a hill on your soil retention there's many different determining factors to the broad question that if we're specifically talking about maybe what's inside your homes infrastructure mainframes and water lines typical cleaning life expectancy is anywhere between 25 to 30 years and it's really depending upon you know the quality of the of the workmanship as well as what type of materials were used within the within the home and how well they were maintained well it's interesting you mentioned materials a lot of the materials that would be 3040 fifty years old are likely to be copper but today there's other materials you might replace the old copper with what would that be yeah so there's definitely lots of materials out there but the choice for most plumbers these days has been you know your pex A or B type piping which specifically we here we use the uplander brand text a piping which is more of a flexible polyethylene and don't confuse it with it being a plastic piping this is actually polyethylene made of 100% pure materials so it has memory so this type of piping is what we use to actually from new builds to even the remodels to three pipes it's it's the go to piping of choice these days for many reasons one of which is the ease of use the actual properties it's made of so it doesn't burst break it expands and contracts with heat and cold so most people's weather systems that they may encounter it's a better type of pipe and you know you're colder weather atmospheres it's what most people are using these days to replace the copper and copper used to be the gold standard in people's houses but I can tell you that here in Southern California specifically where we're at copper it wears out pretty quickly especially because of our bad water that we have here because the problems that we have with you know the way that it may be installed the way it may be touching with the soil the way that the that the minerals inside the water affect the ferrous materials inside copper there's a lot of reasons why copper wear out and the pex doesn't it's kind of those standard in which we use for the pex now so Bob and short how does someone know that they need to replace their pipes is the water pressure lower are they seeing sediment is it all the above yeah so it's definitely all the above obviously if you've had pinhole leaks in the past which is typical starting to the the wear of your system and most people started experiencing maybe one or two pinhole leaks in their house and they they're not quite ready to replace all the piping in their house they're just spot repairing piping you know is one determining factor that you're ready to start replacing all the piping in your house the other could be that you have you know qualified plumbing technician come out and do a do a visual inspection of what they can see inside your house and it's usually pretty obvious you know to the to an experienced plumber whether your piping is at the fail point or whether or not you might have a little bit of life in there but plumbing is one of those things that usually will surprise you before you know it lets you know when you're ready usually unfortunately and there are some great products out there these days that can help you know some of the early detection of that are out there that help knowing that will not have done about ready to happen hey Bob I really appreciate this and of course I know the listeners really appreciate this if you want to get ahold of Bob and his team over personal plumbing the easiest way is go to the description of this podcast and all the information is just a click away Bob thank you so much for your time today thanks Joe thanks for having me check a Pro is your local source or pre-qualified contractors stay tuned for more
