Have you ever….

  • Implemented classroom management strategies that didn’t sit right with you, or didn’t even feel humane?
  • Questioned if these strategies were actually necessary for learning? Even more so, are they actually a part of our journey for liberation?
  • Wondered why we feel so comfortable treating Black children this way?

…all to save time for learning? Teaching “Grit” is a cornerstone of character education across many schools serving Black children. It is promoted and endorsed as a legitimate method for closing academic achievement gaps. However, in today’s episode, we discuss how prioritizing the moral character development and grit of Black children is problematic. Join us as we discuss:

  1. How the idea of Black children needing grit reinforces anti-blackness.
  2. Why "grit" absolves teachers and schools from being accountable for actual instructional practices
  3. How "grit" dismisses our ancestors’ 400 year legacy of survival and resistance
  4. How Brooklynn felt in her K-12 educational years when it came to the topic of slavery
  5. What opened Sable's eyes and made her feel empowered in her educational experience
  6. State-wide statistics around the disproportionate suspension rates between Black children and white children
