2 months back I did a show wholly devoted to different phases of Black Sabbath and Deep Purple and today we explore Deep Purple further - lineups Mark I, II and IV. From their pop-pyschedelia beginnings featuring vocalist Rod Evans and bassist Nicky Simper through to their incredible live album Made In Japan (1972) and their 6th studio album Who Do We Think We Are (1973). Then there was the very strange post Ritchie Blackmore album Come Taste The Band (1975) which featured the late Tommy Bolin on guitar. By 1975 Blackmore was creating his next epic band Rainbow alongside Italian-USA vocalist Ronnie James Dio. We feature several Rainbow tracks from their epic 2nd album Rising (1976) its follow-up Long Live Rock N Roll (1978). Famous for tensions with vocalists, Blackmore dumped Dio in 1978 and hired Pop-Soul vocalist Graham Bonnet who himself was dumped in favour of Joe Lynn-Turner after just 1 album. We feature a few tracks from Down To Earth (1979) the only album with featuring Bonnet. Purple Mark II vocalist Ian Gillan did some pretty good solo work in the early 80s with his band Gillan. We feature tracks from their Glory Road (1980) and Future Shock (1981) albums. In 1984 Purple reformed with their Mark II line-up for the album Perfect Strangers and we close the show with a long track from this album.
