Welcome to “Terms to Know” – Episode #35 of Co-creating Peace, a series about conscious communication and conflict transformation.

In previous episodes of this podcast, I talked about the importance of being mindful of how we use words. In times of change and unrest, such as the times we are in now, new terms often emerge to help us to better understand the world around us and one another, while other terms that have been around for awhile take on new importance.

In this episode, I have invited my dear friend Hollis to help clarify some terms we are hearing a lot these days, but which are often misused, such as equity and equality, which are often mistakenly used interchangeably, as are the words gender and sex. He will also talk about the importance of the use of appropriate pronouns, and clarify terms that are often misunderstood, such as transgender and gender identity.

Hollis Benjamin uses he/him pronouns. He has a BA in Behavioral Science and a Masters of Social Work degree. Hollis is currently earning a graduate certificate in Nonprofit Leadership and Public Management, and is considering a doctorate in education with a focus in organizational leadership in a few years. He has strong interests in racial justice, cross-cultural capacity building, and overarching social justice issues.
