In recent years, the importance of endometriosis has been put on the table , how it affects a woman's life and how it can compromise fertility.
But first, what is endometriosis? It is a disorder that occurs when the tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus (endometrium) is found outside the uterus . Endometriosis can develop outside the uterus, in the ovaries and tubes, and even in the bladder or intestines. This tissue can irritate the structures it touches, causing pain and adhesions (scar tissue) in these organs. Today, in the world there are more than 200 million women who live with it
If you have endometriosis, it may be more difficult for you to get pregnant. 30 % to 50% of women with endometriosis may experience infertility .
Endometriosis can influence fertility in several ways: it distorts the anatomy of the pelvis, it produces adhesions, it scars the fallopian tubes, it causes inflammation in the structures of the pelvis, it alters the functioning of the immune system, it changes the hormonal environment of the ovules, impairs the implantation of the pregnancy and alters the quality of the ovule.
It can be scored from stage 1 to stage 4 depending on its depth and location. This scoring system correlates with pregnancy success, in fact, women with severe endometriosis (stage 4) require advanced fertility treatment .
